()
About this ebook
Dr. Starling-Matthews felt the call of God on her life at a very young age as she sat at her mothers feet and traveled with her throughout the state of West Virginia to visit youth groups in various churches. During that time, she determined within herself to become a mentor and role model for youth everywhere who desired to walk closely with the Lord. She wanted to promote their self-esteem and encourage them to prepare themselves both spiritually and academically in their quest to please God and work successfully in their chosen career.
Dr. Starling-Matthews has traveled throughout the United States as an inspirational speaker conducting leadership conferences and as a seminar facilitator promoting excellence in the service of the Lord. She is an acclaimed event coordinator and leader of womens ministries. She has enjoyed holding a wide range of positionsboth professionally and spiritually. She counts her experiences all joy and esteems her work in ministry support just as valuable as her roles of leadership. Her signature theme is: We Are All Somebody In Jesus!
She thanks God for the opportunity to work with her husband, Bishop John D. Matthews Sr., in ministry as he serves as pastor and Diocesan Bishop in the state of Louisiana.

This book is especially dedicated to the memory my own mother, Mary Magdalene Harris-Moore (1915–2008). All praises go to God for instilling a perpetual thrill of her spiritual journey in my heart. She was my mentor, my prayer partner, my confidant, and my very best friend.
Foreword
The Journey to Pentecost is an inspirational account of a godly woman’s continuous search for a closer and deeper walk with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Told through the voice of her daughter, Dr. Carolyn Starling-Matthews, the story is a very compelling testimony of the fulfillment of the prophet Joel in Acts 2:17. Simultaneously, because of God’s grace and mercy, a message of joy, strength, and hope emanates from each page. We’ve all heard the phrase, Life is not a destination; it’s a journey.
This compelling description of Mary Harris-Moore’s spiritual journey indeed affirms the fact that with Christ, comfort and care will always be there to keep us as we travel life’s road of never ending twists, turns, bumps, and detours.
Dr. Matthews, an anointed, gifted, outstanding, and highly respected woman of God, conveys this message of hope for all as we seek to grow deeper in the precious name of Jesus. Her spiritual journey, as the daughter of missionary Harris-Moore, has not been easy. She has experienced the happiness and heartaches we all experience going through life each day. Her wonderful spirit and sincere devotion to the Lord has sustained her, kept her, and allowed her to be mightily blessed, and she, in turn, has been a tremendous blessing to others. She has served in many servant and leadership positions that enabled her to fulfill her passion to serve mankind.
For Dr. Matthews, life has still been rich and fulfilling because Christ has always been at the center of her work, not only for God’s kingdom, but also for her work in the secular world as a highly esteemed career educator/administrator. Dr. Matthews still maintains a fine reputation of excellence among educators in the Chicago Public School system.
The Journey to Pentecost is a must-read for those of us seeking for Him and appreciate God’s presence in our lives. As we travel, we all seek to encounter peace and victory. This book will impact your life in such a powerful way that you will come away with a greater sense of knowing that with faith in Christ, all things are indeed possible.
Dr. Audrey J. Donaldson, Retired Administrator
Professor, American College of Education
Foreword
The Journey to Pentecost: Through the Eyes of a Daughter is a must-read
for every family. It highlights a daughter’s childhood memories of stories told by her mother about embracing Pentecost and thus a rich spiritual legacy was born that has already expanded several generations.
This book rejuvenates the excitement of a mother’s early journey walking with the Lord and the extraordinary relationship established through her love with God. Through this love, she instills godly principles and a sincere reverence in her five children, which includes the author, my mother, Dr. Carolyn Starling-Matthews. I am the fourth generation of Pentecostals and the legacy lives on through my siblings, our children, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
This book is beyond taking a step to make Jesus a choice as one’s personal savior; it also encompasses hope and establishes a strong bond between Christ and his children. The Bible states, "One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts." (Psalm. 145:3 KJV).
As I write this Foreword for my own mother’s book, I have joyous emotions and gratitude to be included in the Journey of Pentecost. Having watched the lives of my grandmother and my own mother, I adopted a faith-walk in Christ Jesus. Walking with the Lord encompasses more than just talk; it is about action. My grandmother and my mother showed us through examples that faith without works is dead
(James 2:26). We learned to rest on our faith a long time ago.
I cannot imagine not experiencing this
