For Kylie, Iesha, and Jye … my life

Like father to son, you learn to carry on …

If you want to be a grocer, a general, a politician, or a judge, you will invariably become it; that is your punishment. If you never know what you want to be, if you live what some might call the dynamic life but what I will call the artistic life, if each day you are unsure of who you are and what you know, you will never become anything, and that is your reward.

    Foreword

    A Self-Made Man

It is often said of captains of industry or moguls of the business world who have amassed a huge financial empire that they were self-made. The phrase is used to tell us that without a huge family inheritance, they were able to build a fortune through their business. We can marvel from an outsider’s perspective at their achievements but may never know what sort of man or woman they are and what internal work they did to build themselves to this level.

Leigh McRae is a self-made man in the truest sense of the phrase.

He doesn’t own a trans-global empire, but every aspect of his life, business, and unique personality is a result of a constant pursuit of exploration, personal development, and self-expression.

From an early age, he realised through harsh lessons that he would need to search for his own life teachers. He began to question blind obedience to religion and social conventions, and his journey led him to choose the life of a performing artist. Many of his contemporaries were content singing at the same old gigs and were happy to rest on their natural talent, but Leigh was driven and wanted to be the best singer he could be. He pursued his personal development as if his life depended on it, because for Leigh, it did.

His pursuit of excellence led him to use his life’s savings to travel to America so he could develop his natural talent with the one of world’s greatest singing teachers. With only enough money for two lessons a week, Leigh asked humbly if he might be able to sit in on the sessions of others so that he may learn. Leigh’s journey was successful, and he began a lifetime love of performing and an appreciation of the craft of singing.

The life of an artist is truly bipolar, filled with great highs and disappointing lows. To survive such intensity of emotions, artists must develop an inner strength to carry them through.

Leigh has found many inspirational teachers, fellow journeyman, colourful characters, and a fair share of charlatans along his path; they both inspired and lightened his journey, especially during those times of intense self-doubt.

Those who are lucky enough to count Leigh as a friend have spent many hours being regaled by these stories, sometimes hilarious, often serious, weird even, but always enlightening. As one of Leigh’s friends and colleagues, I am delighted that he has chosen to share his wonderful stories with you.

These are the stories of life’s moments that have sustained Leigh along his journey and have become part of his inner dialog that continues to inspire him to seek the answer to life’s complexities.

I know you will laugh and at times be moved and inspired, as I have been over the years.

    Preface

In today’s fast-moving instant social media frenzied information super highway, everyone is an expert, or so it seems. These days with just the push of a button, there it is, the answer to … who knows? What follows in these pages are my experiences in a number of incredibly unique circumstances. They are not researched or compiled from case studies or data, they are real life (in many cases my own) experiences and observations that I have in turn shared with the thousands of attendees to my workshops and in private consultation as an international voice teacher and coach. My philosophy is very simple. I believe and know that we learn from other people’s experiences, their stories, if you like. My fervent hope is that some of these stories that I have picked up along the way will encourage you to look at your own life, and by relating to the message contained within, you will find comfort, solace, and maybe even a little laugh here and there. This is a book with no beginning or end. I suggest that you read a chapter, any chapter, then put the book down and contemplate whatever thoughts come to mind. It is not my intention to tell anyone how to fix anything or live their life. My intention with these stories is to contact the internal knower of you, the reader. It is this internal friend who not only knows how to repair the hurts and disappointments of life, but in fact has always known.

    My sincerest love and affection.

    Leigh McRae

Be Brave, Be Courageous, Stay Beautiful

    Getting There

For more than twenty-five years, I have had the personal pleasure of working with many thousands of singers, dancers, actors, and performers. I have conducted workshops in many parts of the world, often with the use of an interpreter, and whilst we speak different languages, there is not a great deal of difference about us, no matter where we come from (certainly where music is involved). A great many of these singers and actors have made some measureable changes to their life and the lives of others. I get regular updates as to their progress, auditions, recordings, and so on. I am immensely proud of my involvement and equally more aware of what I might reasonably lay credit to in regard to their success. My reminder to myself on this is that if you are going to take credit for the good ones, then you pretty much have to take the blame for the bad ones as well. Not everyone responds the same to every bit of advice or teaching method. For those who have trusted me and applied the techniques and principles that I truly believed would benefit them, I am eternally grateful. To those I was not able to help, I made it my mission to assist them in finding someone who could. My teaching mentor, Seth Riggs, once said to me, You help singers get over their vocal problems and show them how to get on with their lives. Pretty brash statement really; I mean, it’s just singing, right? Not so, because to many, it is life itself …

I tell my students on a regular basis to think about the following: If you are what you do, then who are you when you don’t do it? I first heard this when I attended a Wayne Dyer program, and it near knocked me off my feet. At the time, I was living with the belief that I was what I did, a singer and actor, and I was following it through to the nth degree. I believed that to not be truly immersed in my art was to not be truly committed, and that meant that my drive would wane. It was only years later when I finally learned that I could become more effective in just about every area of my life by breaking free of these obsessions.
