Description

Love blossoms for Eli and Natalie. Eli and Solomon remain at odds. Dark secrets are revealed.

Eli and Natalie are adjusting to married life, appreciating each other's quirks and imperfections, determined to remain best friends while learning to be lovers. He'll make whatever changes needed to ensure he's a perfect match for the woman of his dreams. But he fears the secrets he's been keeping from Natalie will turn his life - their lives - into one big nightmare.

Solomon knows those secrets. He's already revealed one secret (a.k.a the plan) to Natalie, thinking it would thwart her relationship with Eli. That attempt failed...

Now he's back at it - trying to convince Natalie that Eli is a murderer. That he murdered his own partner, Officer Avery Singleton four years ago. With an arsenal of secrets from Eli's past, Solomon knows he'll destroy their marriage this time. He has to, because he wants much more than just seeing his brother in prison.

Chapter One

Natalie languidly opened her eyes to a pair of dark ones boring into her soul as she awakened from sleep early in the morning. Five something. Before-the-sun something. Those analytical eyes watching her didn’t blink. Didn’t move. They were solid. Wide open. Staring. Focused like a lens on a high-priced camera. Locked on her like a skilled archer with his bow and arrow set, ready to strike dead center on a target. She was his target, and he, Elias Leaumont, was the arrow.

Her heart rate quickened like she’d been startled. Nerve endings tingled as if he’d reach out and touched her. But he hadn’t. Not yet, at least. Still, she could anticipate his touch. His large hands stroking methodically against her back. She knew just how her body would react to him. How her breath seemed to catch whenever he kissed her. How her mind went blank. The man made her feel so many emotions that sometimes, she didn’t know how she could handle it all. It didn’t use to be that way, not when they were just friends.

When Eli would stare at her before they were married – and he stared a lot – she would smile. Cheeks would redden from flattery. There was no quickening of her heart. No comprehension of the desperation in his eyes. The hungriness in his stares. Now, after marriage, her heart would race out of control whenever he wanted to stare her down. She could see a concoction of love and deep yearning in those eyes. No one had ever loved her the way Eli loved her.

She pulled her arm from underneath the bed covers, softly tracing his lips with her index finger.

His eyes closed.

In his forehead, she saw a disturbance, like a pained expression, but he was in no pain. None whatsoever. Eyes closed, he was feeling, using his senses to take it all in. Every gentle touch. The warmth and softness of her finger. Her legs intertwined with his.

Natalie smiled just barely. She continued navigating, rolling her finger down his chin, across his Adam’s apple and down to his hair-sprinkled chest.

His eyes opened, dark coral orbs staring at her again.

Her eyes flickered with admiration. You have to stop doing that, you know.

Doing what, Allie? he asked smoothly with a dark, husky voice that’s as sexy as he is.

That. Staring at me when you’re supposed to be sleeping.

Don’t pretend you don’t like it.

Natalie giggled. I’m not. I’m just saying... She placed her hand flat against his chest. You just got off work like two hours ago. Aren’t you tired?

How many times are we going to have this same discussion, beautiful?

Her face flushed as a sensation of warmth flooded her insides. Stop it.

Stop what?

You know what you’re doing.

He looked mildly amused.

Natalie drew invisible circles on his chest. Back to my original question – aren’t you tired?

No, he answered quickly.

You’re not?

No. He rested his hand against the side of her face, then proceeded to stroke her cheek with his thumb. He watched her eyes close. Saw the slight frown in her forehead. Heard the soft, barely audible whimpers escape through her lips. He had just as much control over her that she had over him. They were equal in their obsession with each other. And right now, precisely at this moment, he didn’t care about what it was she had to talk to Cadence about concerning Solomon. He just cared about her. His wife. His lover. His everything, all wrapped up in a neat little package. She was a gift, his gift that he vowed to never take for granted. A gift he’d enjoy unwrapping over and over again, starting right now.

Easing his body on top of hers and resting his elbows on the mattress, he stared down at her. Didn’t speak a word. He stared, in amazement, his eyes taking in every inch of her glowing, pre-dawn face, and for that lovely moment at six in the morning, time stilled.

Beige, sheer curtains fanned at the windows. The ceiling fan spun around, causing their dance. The bed covers were tangled like Natalie’s hair
