About this ebook

In the worlds of do-it-yourself psychology and deliverance ministries, the psychologists are trying to figure out how the mind of man works to help him solve his problems, while the deliverance ministries maintain all of man’s problems, from insanity to back pains, are Satan’s fault. Both view man under bondage. One sees man as being under the sway of misconceptions of the mind; the other sees man as being under the influence of demons.
Dr. Neil T. Anderson has carved out a place for himself in both worlds with his books, study guides, and videos on spiritual conflicts.

Error Begets Error And Heresy Begets Heresy

An Examination of The Bondage Breaker

    By

    Michael Mathison

Thesis: Dr. Anderson's bookThe Bondage Breakercontains false assertions and contradictions. Following his book will lead the Christian into more bondage, and not freedom.

Introduction: Looking specifically atThe Bondage Breakerwe will test Dr. Anderson's assertions and contradictions to discover if the book will free the Christian from bondage.

Assertion: We are not sinners saved by grace, but saints who occasionally sin.

    Contains problems of definition.

    Saints are only justified sinners.

Occasionally is significantly less that what is seen in reality.

    Sin means unrighteousness.

The only way we can ever hope to achieve God's goal is through His grace.

Assertion: If you see yourself as a sinner, you will sin.

Contains problem of logic in that you have to realize that you have a problem before help can be applied.

Practically of the first step in A.A. and its benefits.

Assertion: Your Christian life will be mediocre and doomed if you see yourself as a sinner.

This assertion shows a problem with perception.

Quote: fromThe Bible Has The Answershows this does not have to be the case.

One has to know the temptation in order to avoid it.

People who come closer to God see themselves as more sinful, not less.

Quote fromMere Christianityshows this to be the case.

    Example of Ruth Graham.

    Examples from TheBible.

    The Ten Commandments.

    Example of Isaiah.

    Example of Simon Peter.

    Example of Paul.

Assertion: Sin is separate from the saint.

Quote fromVictory Over The Darknessshows that Dr. Anderson believes that 2 Corinthians 5:17 is a completed act.

2 Corinthians 5:17 is not a completed act.

Matthew 23:25-26 says to clean the inside first.

Contradiction: We are either involved in the process or we are not.

Assertion: Romans 7:15-25 says that it is not we committing the sin.

Romans 7:14 says that Paul is sold to sin.

Galatians 3:3 says that the work of sanctification cannot be completed in the flesh.

In 1 Timothy 1:15 Paul calls himself the worst of sinners.

Assertion: 1 Timothy 1:15 should be understood differently as seen in Dr. Anderson's quote fromVictory Over The Darkness.

1 Timothy 1:15 is referring to the past according to 1 Corinthians 15:10.

1 Timothy 1:15 is in the present by context.

The verbs of Ephesians 6 is important to Dr. Anderson, why not 1 Timothy 1:15?

1 Corinthians 15:10 is defending Paul's apostleship rather than his sainthood according toThe New Bible Commentary: Revised.

Dr. Anderson's methods for opening the door to Satan are:

Proper, such as pride and rebellion.

Silly, such as thinking well of your pastor.

What is the true definition of the word sensuality?

    Definition fromStrong's Concordance

Definition fromThe New Bible Commentary: Revised.

Definition fromHalley's Bible Handbook: New Revised Edition.

If your pastor is well spoken and charismatic, it is a danger.

Charisma is not a proper test, life and doctrine are.

Paul advises Timothy to watch his life and doctrine.

Dr. Anderson advises us not to emphasize doctrine, but common heritage.

    Unprovable, such as generational curses.

Generational curses not found in Scripture.

Quote from Exodus 20:6 show that curses can be broken.

Examples from Israel's kings show that curses are not passed down.

Ezekiel 18 makes it clear that the son is not responsible for the sins of the father.

A new creation does not have to worry about generational curses.

Assertion: Adopted children are especially susceptible to demonic strongholds that will have to be renounced.

One would have to guess at strongholds if one does not know his past.

One could attribute strongholds that do not exist.
