    About the Author

    Introduction

It was the winter of 2016. After a strong flu that left me with an ear infection for which I had to take antibiotics and due to some stress at work, I noticed one night this horrible, non-stop sound surrounding me. I could not figure out where it was coming from. I thought my HVAC system (heating system) developed some weird noises so the next day I asked my boyfriend to have a look at it. He tried to detect the sound that was bugging me but to my surprise, he would not hear it. What??? But it’s got to be somewhere here, I hear it so well! I said. We even brought in an HVAC specialist to have a look at our heating system but he could not find anything wrong about it. And he claimed, he could not hear any strange noise coming from it. And yet, day and night I would hear this horrible bugging noise around me, following me like a shadow.

Within a couple of days I got an appointment with my doctor and as soon as I explained to him about my symptoms he concluded: Oh, but that’s tinnitus!

I had never even heard of this term before. Ok, so, what is the treatment for it? I assume there must be something to do about it, right, doctor? I asked. At this point, I was very optimistic thinking that all ailments could be treated. Then I saw him looking a little bit sad and when he met my gaze again he said: Unfortunately there is no cure for tinnitus. You have to learn to live with it. Of course, I can prescribe you some anxiety pills but that’s about it he said.

That came like a shock to me. I could not believe my ears… So, from now on, that is what my life will look like and I have to live with the annoying noise!? Me, who loved quiet places, who loved sleeping in a very quiet bedroom… Now was I doomed to live with this permanent noise?? I did not understand the world anymore...

Out of the blue, this ringing in my ears became part of me, part of my life. It came to terrorize me with no mercy.

Once I had a name for this ailment, I made the decision to fight against it, to find a cure or at least find a way to lower its volume so it would not bother me at night anymore. I was desperate to get my old life back. Desperate times call for desperate measures…

If you get those unexplained noises for the first time, you should consult an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) physician within a few days or as soon as you can. If you are lucky, it could be just an ear infection which can generate the ringing in the ears.

Just to rule out any other serious condition, my doctor sent me to see an ENT specialist who evaluated my symptoms, examined the eardrum with a special microscope and also examined my nose and pharynx. Then he performed a hearing test (audiogram) which aims to measure the hearing capacity.

The audiogram, which takes place in a small soundproof room tests
