About this ebook

The Freedom of Expression is an important set of rights that are currently being questioned in the modern day, and a thorough understanding of just what these rights are and their importance is essential to the discussion. This short political essay explores some of the basic aspects of these rights and their importance, as well as the various concepts that threaten to encroach upon these rights.
Freedom of Expression is under attack. People are being told they should fear, shun, and deny any difference in opinion, going so far as to shut down those opinions by any means necessary. This issue needs to be dealt with quickly and succinctly, before these foundational freedoms are pulled away. We must not censor and remove that which we are told to fear. We should instead embrace it, understand it, and ultimately determine any validity for ourselves, and not because we were told so. We must speak openly and honestly to continue to ensure our Life, our Liberty, and our Pursuit of Happiness.

    INTRODUCTION

"...[W]hen men have realized that time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas -- that the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be carried out. That, at any rate, is the theory of our Constitution. It is an experiment, as all life is an experiment. Every year, if not every day, we have to wager our salvation upon some prophecy based upon imperfect knowledge. While that experiment is part of our system, I think that we should be eternally vigilant against attempts to check the expression of opinions that we loathe and believe to be fraught with death, unless they so imminently threaten immediate interference with the lawful and pressing purposes of the law that an immediate check is required to save the country."

-Justice Oliver Holmes, Abrams v. United States

In the modern era, nearly everything seems to have become a battleground. Business, class, entertainment, education, race, sex, most things seem to have transformed into battles of ideology. We are polarized, steadfastly drawn along identitarian lines. Even though we are divided along these fronts, it is important to take a step back, take a deep breath, and take a good look at what should be the most important identity of them all: American. Despite the political and moral upheaval surrounding us, we cannot forget the importance of these underpinning values and ideas. They are a reminder of one tireless desire- the desire to be a free people. However, this seems to have been forgotten, buried beneath the constant bickering and strife of our current discourse. It is important to go back to basics and
