About this ebook

The drama department puts out a contet to write a play with a pun on "school's cool," and Morgan Reynolds comes in second place, beat by super cute Ryan's play about the ghoul that comes to school.

Ryan really seems to like Morgan, and tries to get her involved in the play.  Then their friends begin to die, and they begin to wonder if there really is a ghoul in the school...

Bloodrock Ridge, Colorado, is home to more than its fair share of hauntings, mysterious deaths, and there are even some stories that tell of strange creatures that prowl the streets. Many powerful people and entities are vying for control of the souls within Bloodrock Ridge. Now, there are whispers of an ancient evil returning to Bloodrock Ridge...

**Note- Bloodrock Ridge is a series of novellas... that is to say, each story is not a full length novel! They are generally around 50 pages in a 6x9 paperback format**

    For Jenny,

The love I never got to have, but one of my best friends for life.

    Bloodrock Ridge 5

    School’s Ghoul

Mrs. Williams stood in the middle of the square of student desks, leaning her large frame against her desk. She wore her thinning blonde hair in poofy curls and had a pair of reading glasses on a chain that hung from her neck. A smile beamed from her round face.

Morgan Reynolds liked the fact that Mrs. Williams arranged the students’ desks in a big square around the room. But she didn't like the fact that the two desks to her right were still empty. Right next to her had been Ann Marie, a new girl who Morgan thought was going to turn out to be a good friend. Then Anna Marie had died the first night of the school year, and her desk had been empty ever since. Creative writing wasn't popular enough to have anything like a waiting list of students.

To the right of that desk had been Doc’s desk. Doc had been one of Morgan's crushes last year, but he had been dating her friend Rachel Stewart then. After Ann Marie's death, Doc had stopped going to school. He was being homeschooled with a private tutor now, and Morgan just couldn't bring herself to go see him at his house.

The empty desks carried too much pain.

The drama department has selected the winning entry for the play, Mrs. Williams said happily. As you recall, the theme was ‘School’s Cool,’ and the drama department encouraged creative takes on that. The winning play was entered by someone in this class!

The class immediately broke out into murmuring. Even Morgan's heart seemed to skip a beat. She had submitted a play. Her twist had been that one of the teachers was secretly an evil witch who cast a spell, making it always winter inside the school. She had secretly used her history teacher teacher, Mrs. Jennings, as the evil witch, but had of course used a different name.

The winning entry was ‘School’s Ghoul’, submitted by Ryan Bromley, the teacher announced proudly.

Yes! Yeah! Ryan cheered as everyone else in the class, including Morgan, applauded.

    Good for him, she thought.

Ryan had short brown hair, light blue eyes, and a narrow strip of a beard that ran across the bottom of his face only, which was... Different. At first, Morgan thought it was weird, but she was beginning to think that it was actually different in a good way. Creative. Although he wasn't on any sports team, he was one of the more muscled guys in school.

Give it up, girlfriend, Rachel said quietly from her left. He's totally mine.

Morgan smiled at her friend. Sounds like a challenge!

Rachel had beautiful long brown hair and light green eyes, was two inches taller than Morgan, and her bust was a full cup size larger, which gave her more of an advantage than it should with high school guys, but then... they were high school guys.

Challenge accepted, Rachel answered as the applause and cheering died down. Her eyes flashed excitedly.

Morgan smiled again. Rachel could be counted on for her competitive nature. Many would say she was overly competitive. Morgan wasn't even sure that she would try for Ryan, but it was usually fun to see Rachel in action.

There will be a casting call on Friday for those interested, Mrs. Williams said. You don't have to be in drama to be in the play.

There we go, Rachel said quietly to Morgan. I'll go land the lead role in his play. That should be a great start.

See you there, Morgan answered with a grin.

But, Mrs. Williams, Friday is the Forever Dance, one of the students complained.

Casting call is right after fourth period, and should only last an hour or so, Mrs. Williams answered, so you will still have plenty of time to get ready for the dance. I believe some of the teachers will also allow you to leave during fourth to go try out. I will be giving that option to my fourth period.

Does us a lot of good, Morgan complained quietly. We are in her third period.

Bloodrock High had eight class periods, but only four a day, alternating from A day to B day, which Morgan liked. It meant fewer times wading through other students in the halls each day.

Mrs. Williams got the class started on their next assignment: A five to ten page short story about a dance in any genre, be as creative as you can be, first draft due Friday.

Rachel talked a little about devising
