This first Sons of Broad book is romantic suspense with a heavy emphasis on suspense. Someone wants Tilly Brock dead. That same someone also wants to bring down the wealthy and powerful Benedict family.Keaton Benedict is the youngest of the three Benedict brothers. He's a recent college graduate who wants to begin a division in Benedict Shipping for charitable giving. He's with some friends at a gentleman's club celebrating his graduation when he spots Tilly.Keaton and Tilly were best friends on their way to a romance when she disappeared from his life. He was told that her father embezzled from the Benedict Company, was fired, and moved the family to Texas. In fact, they just moved to a different part of Charleston and dropped out of the upper social circle. Her father and mother both died leaving Tilly to struggle to make her way through college - thus the reason for working at a gentleman's club. Soon after they met again, bodies started appearing around them. First Tilly's friend from work. Then two of the dancers from the club. Keaton's older brother was briefly a suspect in the second dancer's death. Added to the confusion, a young woman who is determined to marry Keaton and who is a family friend has come to spend the summer with the Benedicts. She is not above using blackmail or murder to get her way and convince Keaton to marry her. Then there is the villain of the piece - The Gentleman - and his henchwoman/victim Jade. The Gentleman is involved in all sorts of crime in Charleston including human trafficking and he's the one who wants the Benedicts destroyed. Jade is an interesting character because she has been raised and brainwashed by The Gentleman to hate the Benedicts but is starting to question what she has been taught. The romance storyline between Keaton and Tilly is brought to resolution in this book but the suspense plot will need resolution in the upcoming books in the series. This was a busy story with lots of threads.

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author. (Netgalley) So we have a segment of another series of books connecting characters to the 3 previous novellas of Janie and Brent saga. This is the Benedict's phase. We have Tilly who was one of the waitress from the gentleman's club that Janie worked as a bartender while working under cover. She ends up reconnecting with Keaton who she had a young love with and secrets are being discovered, and the info about her dad is coming to light.. again we have to keystone cops, these people are doing the most ridiculous things and I can't believe that I am reading it, but now I want to know who the hell is the gentleman...

Darkest Night by Tara ThomasSons of Broad #1The blurb made me want to read the book BUT the book did not live up to the blurb. I think this book should be marketed to YA/NA readers who may be more forgiving. As an introduction to a new series the brothers are introduced and we know they will each get their own book BUT for me I don’t think I am really interested in reading the series. That said, I would like to thank SMP and NetGalley for the ARC. So, Tilly is working in a gentleman’s club and she and Raven are getting a lot of grief from twins that dance on stage. There is a “ruthless” killer out there killing off people that are close to Tilly. Keaton Benedict is the first boy that kissed Tilly and he shows up at the club Tilly works at. When she is threatened he takes her under his wing. Tilly will graduate from college soon and Keaton has just finished college and has an agenda for the family company (that I found rather unusual). There is someone called “The Gentleman” pulling the strings of what sounds like a secret group of some sort and he is the “mastermind” behind the drama of the story. Who is killing people was fairly easy to figure out. There was a lot going on but it didn’t seem to go anywhere…if that makes sense? Anyway, I finished it and do not think I will be reading more of this series. 2-3 Stars

Every once in a while, you need to take a break from the murder mysteries and pick up a romantic suspense novel. That is just what I did with this book. I enjoyed this book. The balance of romance to suspense was just about right for me. What I mean but this is that the romance seemed to take over more in the beginning and stayed throughout the rest of the storyline; whereas, the suspense part tickled the senses. However, speaking of romance, the chemistry between Tilly and Keaton was steamy. Keaton is the type of guy that women want. He is tall, smart, good looking, rich, and a protector. Although, I am not going to say that Tilly was a wilting flower. She was tough too. Yet, it never hurts to have extra back up. While, I will say that Tilly and Keaton hooked up quickly, I didn't mind this time. They were good together. Plus, their romance was not a distraction. This book is a good start to a new series from author, Tara Thomas. The next book promises to be just as good.

Darkest Night is the first full length novel in the Sons of Broad series. It is a second chance romance that also has elements of suspense and mystery added in the mix. Who is not a fan second chance romances? I know I am! There is an overarching plot line that was developed in this story and it is definitely going to have me coming back for more. There are three novellas in this series that are openers to the main characters that are featured throughout this series. Reading the novellas are not a necessary competent to enjoying this story but it does give you a glimpse into the beginnings of the characters and does introduce The Gentleman.Keaton Benedict is the youngest of the Benedict brothers, he has recently graduated college and has come home to visit family and weigh his options regarding getting into the family shipping business over at Benedict Industries. While out celebrating his return home, Keaton caught a glimpse of someone who looked familiar but Keaton could not believe what he was seeing. Tilly Brock was the girl next door that was his best friend growing up and was starting to become something more before her family fell into disgrace and they relocated, or so he thought. So, when he saw Tilly working at a local gentleman’s club he was shocked.Tilly remembers Keaton, in fact there has not been a day that has gone by where she had not thought of him. After eight years without a word Tilly was shocked to see Keaton at her place of business and it was as if no time had gone by at all. Glad to be reunited Tilly and Keaton lost no time catching up and after a few awkward moments it was like they had never been separated. Just when it seemed like everything was looking up for Tilly her world as rocked. Murders started taking place and they all seemed to be tied to Tilly in some way. A sinister person, only known as The Gentleman, had a nefarious scheme that he had put into play that he was sure was going to take down the Benedict brothers for good. What I enjoyed the most while reading Darkest Night was the Benedict brothers. They had each other’s backs and they stuck together. I liked the romance in this story and I liked the mystery but I had a hard time understanding why some mysterious man had it out for the Benedict brothers and Tilly. The motivation for the vendetta was unclear to me. I liked the characters but was not able to truly relate to or connect with them, they felt very juvenile. Also, there was an introduction of a love triangle of sorts but it also needed to be developed because it didn’t feel real to me. What did feel real to me was the character of Jade, her I want to know more about! Overall, Darkest Night did grab my curiosity and I am looking forward to understanding what The Gentleman has in store for the Benedict brothers. This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.

Darkest NightByTara ThomasThis book is about two strong southern families...once united...now torn apart...with lots of mystery surrounding their issues. Tilly and Keaton...members of these estranged families...also torn apart...but on the verge of reuniting. However...something sinister...the Gentleman...is lurking in their lives...something evil...something that may keep Tilly and Keaton apart and destroy Keaton’s family. Are the Keaton men...Kipling, Knox, and Keaton...strong enough to survive this plus Elise? Elise is determined to marry Keaton. I liked this book but didn’t really love it. It has tons of mystery...tons of very juicy sexy bits...and tons of murder and mayhem. Keaton and Tilly are a romance in the making. Elise is the mean girl bully determined to tear them apart. Plus it seems as though this book will have a sequel...there were lots of unanswered questions. I didn’t love this book but I might have to read the sequel just to see what happens next. Readers who enjoy romantic suspenseful books...should like this one. My thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this book. I read it and reviewed it because I wanted to.

Darkest Night is the start of a romantic suspense series by Tara Thomas that takes place in Charleston. The series features one of three brothers romance in each of the books. While I am writing this, there are only three books in the series, and I haven’t researched to see if there are plans to go beyond that. Their family is being targeted by someone trying to destroy the Benedicts. The first book is the introduction. So you usually try to give it a little to help build up the story, but they rushed the first 25% of this book. It is all murder chaos, rushed character introductions, and few descriptions of what's going on. Most of it feels like just conversations. It starts with Tilly Brock and Keaton Benedict. They were best friends throughout childhood and first loves until they charged her father with embezzling funds from the Benedict‘s family company. At that point, it gets weird with the writing style. Keaton’s mother told him Tilly and her family moved to Texas, and he never contacted Tilly again. She was even hinting for him to date another family’s daughter, Elise, right after. There is only a handful of mentions about the embezzlement scandal and it leads you to believe it was a mistake. It doesn’t touch that plotline at all after those few sentences. Then Elise moving in and practically promised to Keaton because her father worked with his father. Apparently, marriage is all business then. That character felt odd, because she was angry and vindictive, but turns out to be a throwaway character in a bizarre turn of events. It felt clunky and thrown in for some hopeful intrigue. Not to mention there is a murderer who is targeting Tilly specifically. Why because she knew the Benedicts almost 10 years ago…. what… like she is from the deep past childhood, why is she a lynchpin to taking the boys down? It is written like the killer intended for Tilly and Keaton to meet, but they wrote the scene like a random meeting. There are so many random plot things in the book. The murders, a family affair with a half-sister, there is a mastermind with minions who murder. I think there is a human trafficking element.I want to touch beyond the story and hit the characters a little here too. Keaton is supposed to be this “notorious bachelor” but he feels like just some random college kid in a rich family. The family doesn’t feel like they are as famous as that label suggests. Maybe one of the other brothers would fit that description better, but beyond their own household, they don‘t feel like they are that renown to the community. They really could just be any slightly rich people. It just added to the rough feeling of the story. There is a lot of unanswered questions left in this book. The writing got better as the story progressed. It ends well to lead you into the next book(s) I feel. I just don‘t know if it is a strong enough start to pull people in for the whole series. I almost quit myself at the start. There are issues with the story I have, but again, that will hopefully be resolved in the future books. I’m just not sure if I am interested enough to try and finish it. I try to push through tough points in books. I am glad I did it with this book. I appreciate this story, but I wasn’t completely sold on it.
