Summary

Weston Payley is a 51-year-old author of a series of romance novels. He moves from his longtime home of Chicago to a small town in the middle of Illinois where he summered as a boy. The town is not quite as he remembers, as it struggles with many of the same issues currently besieging Midwestern towns, including high rates of opioid addiction and home foreclosures. Though originally moving to the town to begin a working retirement and to lead a simpler life, Weston unexpectedly falls for a woman named Rebecca who is a single mother in her mid-thirties. To complicate matters further, due to his status as a minor celebrity in the town, Weston is sought out by the mayor to investigate the suspicious death of his teenage son.
