A blue Mazda CX-7 is next in line at the Goodwill donation door at South Houghton and East Golf Links Roads. A fortyish brunette in black yoga pants and a baggy yellow T-shirt emerges slowly, iPhone to her ear. Three cars and two pickups are lined up behind her, but she’s in no rush. Put the frozen dinner in the microwave for two minutes, she says as she saunters from the driver’s seat to the rear passenger door on the opposite side. Yes, two minutes, she repeats as she slowly opens the door.

Standing nearby is Mike Mellors, a fifty-seven-year-old attendant. He stoops over the back seat, pulls out a white garbage bag bursting with what appears to be clothing, and places it on the top shelf of a two-level gray cart. He stoops farther and pulls out an ironing board and a pair of plastic deer antlers. Thank you for your donation, he says.

The woman lowers her phone and voice. There’s a community yard sale at Sierra Morado, she says with a knowing smile, as if providing a hot tip. It’s getting hot, and people are saying, ‘Screw it—I’m done.’ So that’s why people are coming. With that, she gets into her car and drives away.

It’s eleven A.M., Saturday, and the Tucson heat is drenching Mellors’s six-foot frame. But there’s no time to retreat into the air-conditioned warehouse on the other side of the donation door. The donors are lining up. A Kia Sorento is next, its back seat piled with garbage bags. The youthful woman in the driver’s seat lowers the windows and unlocks the doors, but she doesn’t get out.

Yard sale? Mike asks as he opens the door and starts tossing the bags on a cart.

Over at Sierra Morado.

Nice. He hauls out six bags of clothes, an Ogio golf club bag holding two putters, a stack of 2014 World Cup commemorative cups, a ceramic drinking horn roughly the size of a trumpet, a beat-up Braun coffeemaker, four frying pans, and at least ten bags of party favors priced at twenty-five cents each, according to the bright pink tags. Mike pauses at the drinking horn, turning it in his hands. Thanks for your donation! he says and closes the door.

Three hours ago, just before the store opened, he told me that Goodwill is where Tucson’s garage salers unload the things they can’t sell and don’t want to keep. It’s a weekly phenomenon, boosted by the comings and goings of Tucson’s military families and retirees. When they arrive, they need things; later, they realize they can’t take it all with them.

The Sorento pulls away, and a large black Ford pickup carrying a ratty sofa takes its place. I walk through the donation door and into the wide warehouse. It’s busy with employees who’ve arrived to process the rush of donations. Four women sort through boxes of clothes at the far end, and two young men sort through stacks of electronics not far from the donation door. A supervisor strides over from the clothing area to encourage Mellors to work faster.

Between 1967 and 2017, the money that Americans spent annually on stuff—from sofas to cell phones—increased almost twentyfold. Some of that stuff will become treasured heirlooms worthy of future generations. Some will be buried in landfills, turned to ash by incinerators, or—in rare cases—recycled into new goods and heirlooms. And some will persist, packed in basements, closets, attics, garages, and storage units. The precise breakdown is unknown, but there are hints. For example, one 2006 study of Los Angeles middle-class homes found that 90 percent of garage space is now used to store stuff, not automobiles.¹

Americans aren’t alone in their love of stuff. But they are unique in having so much space to store it. That’s a luxury other people would love to have. For example, the Japanese are just as shopping-mad as any CX-7-driving Tucsonan. But their homes are much smaller. So, to make room for new, many Japanese purge. There’s nothing particularly unique in their approach, but millions of Americans—keen to bring order to their homes—have embraced what Marie Kondo, the entrepreneurial Japanese organizing consultant with bestsellers and a hit television series, calls the KonMari Method. It’s an enticing system: keep only what sparks joy; toss everything else. It also leaves open an essential and pressing question: What happens to all that stuff after it’s been KonMari’d?

I pondered the question for the first time in 2014, shortly after I published my first book, Junkyard Planet: Travels in the Billion-Dollar Trash Trade. In it, I followed U.S. recyclables like cardboard, shredded automobiles, and Christmas lights around the world, primarily to China, and argued that if what you toss into your recycling bin can be used in some way, the international scrap recycling business will manage to deliver it to the person or company who can do so most profitably.

Readers soon contacted me to share how they recycle. Some wrote with descriptions and pictures of art projects that incorporate junked electronics like circuit boards and overhead-projector lenses; others offered detailed accounts of furniture and home restorations; I received notes from folks informing me that they were writing on computers and phones they’d repaired at home; and I was the lucky recipient of many, many invitations to visit flea markets, thrift shops, and antique stores.

As the descriptions and invitations accumulated, I felt torn. It’s good to have one’s work appreciated. But my readers weren’t writing to tell me about the sorts of things I described in Junkyard Planet—like giant, multistory automobile shredders. They weren’t even writing to tell me about small-time junkyard dealers like my immigrant great-grandfather—dealers who made a living by collecting and purchasing the waste of their neighbors and selling it to bigger industrial recyclers. Despite my best efforts, the most enthusiastic readers of my book (judging from the notes they send to me) understand recycle as shorthand for reuse.

That’s understandable. For most people in affluent countries, the process of recycling ends at the point they sort their trash into a recycle bin. The highly industrialized processes that follow belong to faceless others. In contrast, the buying and selling of used stuff is intensely personal. Anyone can hold a garage sale, purge their closets on eBay, or visit a flea market. Reuse and resale give consumers a rare, tangible connection to the afterlife of their stuff.

Two weeks after Junkyard Planet was published, my mother passed away unexpectedly. Like so many Americans with parents who accumulated stuff over a lifetime, my sister and I were left with an uneasy question: What do we do with her stuff? From a sentimental standpoint, it was hard to let go of anything for fear it meant something to her. From a practical perspective, neither of us had the space to keep much. My sister and her family live in a two-bedroom New York City co-op; at the time, my wife and I rented a one-bedroom Shanghai apartment.

Our problem wasn’t unique. Around the world, questions about what to do with the material leftovers of a life are becoming as much a part of the mourning process as the funeral. There’s so much, and the children all live somewhere else. Who’s to clean it out?

Much of my mother’s modest estate wound up at Goodwill. I concede I have no idea what happened to her china after I handed it to a donation door attendant. But I had faith that—like the recycled metal that I wrote about in Junkyard Planet—my mother’s secondhand items would be used in some way—not landfilled, incinerated, or recycled. In part, I started this book to reassure myself that my instincts were correct.

That turned out to be harder than I expected. As a business journalist, I am accustomed to confirming my suspicions and assumptions by double-checking them with the data collected by governments, businesses, and trade associations. Want to know the weight of all Christmas-tree lights exported from China to Luxembourg over the last decade? That number exists. Similarly, thanks to a growing and professionalized environmental movement, volumes of data are available on what’s trashed and recycled in wealthy countries. Want a graph showing how much furniture Americans heaved between 2003 and 2013? It can be plotted.

I looked into whether similar data exists for secondhand goods. Data on used cars is plentiful and accurate—so long as you aren’t looking for how many move between international borders in the developing world (at which point many seem to disappear). But beyond cars, the numbers become fuzzy. For example, nobody keeps data on how much clothing moves from closets to rummage sales, there’s no metric on the number of pieces of furniture that flip from college apartments to Goodwills, and no government agency tabulates or even estimates the number of garage sales held annually in the United States and how much revenue they generate. It’s not just a U.S. issue, either. Trade data related to the booming global business of secondhand is even worse. For example, there’s almost no data on the vast trade in secondhand between the world’s developing economies, especially in Africa, where consumers embrace imported secondhand as the ubiquitous material of daily life.

Fortunately, a lack of data doesn’t mean the trade in used goods is untraceable. But instead of finding it through data, a reporter must travel to the places where secondhand goods are collected, bought, repurposed, repaired, and sold. That might entail watching someone take a picture of a shirt and post it to Facebook, eBay, or Poshmark. Or it might entail following a Ghanaian buyer of old laptops from the United States to the city in northern Ghana where he sells them.

Both are small acts that underline an often overlooked truth. Secondhand goods clothe, educate, and entertain billions of people around the world. And all this is accomplished using less energy and far fewer raw materials than what’s required for new goods. However, because governments tend to focus on the value of things made and sold new, the value of used things exchanged between people and businesses is generally invisible except to the people who are involved in buying, selling, and moving them.

This book seeks to uncover that value and restore it to a central place in the daily life of the planet. That’s not easy. Just as no single book can cover the new-goods trade in all its geographic and economic immensity, no single book can hope to cover all secondhand goods, either. Though I’ll touch on a wide range of items, especially in the early chapters, I will eventually focus most intently on clothing and the electronics that accumulate around us. Both are among the most valuable and traded secondhand goods in the world today, and they are the ones with the most interesting—and potentially troubling—futures.

Thanks to innovations in mass production and marketing dating back to the industrial revolution, the world is filled with more things than at any time in history. That’s often a blessing. But not always. As I traveled in the world of secondhand, I was repeatedly overwhelmed by the scale of unwanted stuff. In Tucson, only one third of the donations to Goodwill sell in the charity’s stores. Who buys used plastic antlers (who buys the new ones)? A tattered sofa? A pilled T-shirt?

The flood is rising. Just twenty years ago China was a major importer of secondhand clothes; now it’s a major exporter, with a huge supply that’s driving down the price of used clothes—and the economics of the used-clothing business—globally. It’s not just China that’s shifting to new, either. Growing affluence across the developing world means that more and more consumers are opting for new stuff. Sustainably minded consumers in wealthy countries with the best of intentions simply aren’t numerous enough to make up for the global erosion in secondhand demand.

That imbalance manifests itself in growing piles of unwanted stuff.

According to a 2018 study by the World Bank, humans are on track to generate waste at a pace more than double that of population growth through the year 2050.² Most of that growth will occur in developing regions of Asia and Africa striving to achieve American-style consumption-based economies.

Let’s not pretend: that growth will have negative consequences for the environment. But those consumption-based economies will also bring tangible benefits to billions of human beings, including better health and education. Nothing that an affluent American minimalist can say about consumerism and stuff is likely to change the mind of a developing-world teenager whose only experience of minimalism has been involuntary.

The good news is that this doesn’t need to be the end of the discussion. Social problems have social solutions. One of those social solutions is the already existing secondhand industry, which supplies billions of people with goods around the world. In the latter chapters of this book, I’ll argue that this crucial industry isn’t suffering from a crisis of stuff so much as it is from a crisis of quality. Simple, voluntary steps by manufacturers and consumers to encourage the production of more durable and repairable goods could go a long way toward ensuring that secondhand thrives and grows for decades to come. It doesn’t need to be a revolution, either. Already, manufacturers big and small are building better for growing numbers of consumers who demand it. I’ll highlight a few of them and show how their approach creates a secondhand future.

Quality isn’t the only barrier to a secondhand future. Opposition to globalization also inhibits reuse. But the most serious trade barriers involved in secondhand aren’t tariffs and bans. Rather, the most intractable barriers are prejudices that inhibit people in wealthy countries from selling and shipping their unwanted stuff to people in developing countries. Throughout this book, I’ll explore the origins and impacts of those prejudices, including how they’re promoted, and how and why they should be overcome. There is no secondhand economy that excludes the developing world, and consumers in the wealthy, developed world need to embrace that reality.

If this book succeeds, readers should come away with a much better understanding of how the afterlives of their purchases impact the global economy, the environment, and, ultimately, their closets and basements. With any luck, you’ll have a better idea of what happened (or didn’t happen) to those bags of clothes and that beat-up sofa Mike conveyed through the donation door. And just maybe you’ll change how and why you purchase stuff, if only to make sure you don’t leave a mess for others to clean up later.

Like most Americans, I have done my own share of accumulating over the years. Researching this book helped me let go of some—but not all—of it. I can’t promise readers of this book that they’ll have a similar experience. But they will find a surprising world where what’s old becomes new again, over and over, and the desire to profit from castoffs creates innovation and livelihoods—all over the world at all hours of the day. Finding it is a treasure hunt, one that anyone can join.


Empty the Nest

Highway 169 runs north-south through the affluent western suburbs of Minneapolis. High brown walls that serve as sound barriers block views of most of the neighborhoods, but here and there a mini-storage business appears along the way. Beige seems to be the preferred color, and during the dry Minnesota fall, when the highway scrub turns tan, they’re all but camouflaged.

Everyone knows they’re available and the purpose for which they’re erected. To meet the ever-growing demand from Americans for space to store their stuff, hundreds, sometimes thousands, are erected across the United States every year. As of 2017, there were at least fifty-four thousand mini-storage sites in the United States, with enough rentable space to cover all of Palm Springs, California, golf courses included. In recent years, the industry’s annual profits are triple those of Hollywood.

Those profits won’t be threatened for many years. At a time when personal identity is wrapped up in brands, Americans are prone to keep things longer, and sometimes value them more than they value themselves. At Ace Mini Storage,a located along Highway 169 in Plymouth, the cost for a square foot of unheated storage space exceeds the cost per square foot of many studio apartments in the surrounding area.

On a brisk fall day I stop into the Ace Mini Storage office to ask about price and availability. The balding clerk picks up a piece of paper with a grid printed across it and squints. Outside, a pickup pulls into the parking lot with furniture piled into the bed; a lamp hangs off the side. We might have something available later in the week, the clerk declares and pushes a business card across the desk. A ten-by-forty unit.

It turns out that particular unit is the reason Sharon Kadet is now pulling up in her car. She’s the account manager of Empty the Nest, an eight-year-old local business that empties homes of their property.

The reasons for these cleanouts vary, but they typically revolve around downsizing and death. Business is booming: by 2030 senior citizens will account for one fifth of the U.S. population. Some of those seniors want to remain in their large single-family homes packed with stuff. But many others downsize, either by their own or someone else’s choice. And some will pass on, leaving the heavy responsibility of cleaning out a life’s accumulations to somebody else.

Plenty of companies and individuals will clean out homes and drive the stuff to the dump after skimming the easily marketable objects. But Empty the Nest is unique in its commitment to finding reuse and resale markets before giving up on an object. Empty the Nest has a thrift store, and what can’t be sold there is donated to organizations that might have better luck.

As Sharon steps out of her car, a cold breeze whips past, ruffling her black windbreaker and shoulder-length hair. The deal is that we’re cleaning out two units for this man whose mother filled it up with all kinds of collectibles, she tells me as we walk toward a large truck parked at one end of the facility. It’s pretty incredible how much she left. I think she might’ve had a store.

There are 753 individual units for storing excess stuff at the former Ace Mini Storage in Plymouth, Minnesota.

A truck is parked in the driveway beside two storage units with their doors raised. Three crew members are passing boxes from the units into the truck, where they’re stacked neatly. Standing in silent witness is the woman’s son, a retired auto mechanic happy to chat, so long as I don’t ask for his name. These were my mother’s units. She had a knickknack store. Not antiques, but collectibles.

One unit holds dozens of boxes marked Beanie Babies in black marker. I pull back the top flap of one and see it’s packed with colorful stuffed animals. I looked on Craigslist, the mechanic tells me. They’re going for three dollars. But nobody wants them.

Sharon peers into the truck—it’s about one third full. Then she looks at the larger unit and wonders if there’ll be enough room. The crew assures her that they can manage.

I have my doubts. At the front of the larger unit are display cases. The remainder of the space is filled with unopened boxes from collectible companies. The mechanic’s mother seemed to have a particular affinity for small porcelain Christmas villages made by Department 56, a manufacturer of holiday baubles. There could be a hundred of those alone. And as the movers work deeper into the storage unit, it’s revealed that she was also passionate about limited-edition porcelain dolls marketed by something called the Consummate Collection. I don’t know what she was thinking, buying all this stuff, the mechanic says. Was it for us? When she had her store, I don’t think she had dolls. He picks up an unopened box. Made in China, he mutters.

I step gingerly into the larger unit. On the floor is an unopened six-pack of Coca-Cola with a Santa Claus design and CHRISTMAS 1996 printed across the cans. I look back at the mechanic. How long did she have this unit?

Rented it in 2006 or 2007, he answers. We’ve been paying over five hundred dollars per month for both.

That Coke is twenty-one years old.

He shakes his head. Mother’s house was full of stuff, so she put it here. You kind of wonder if she had a problem with stuff. They sell it to you on credit. We both step back and watch as Empty the Nest’s crew methodically stacks boxes of dolls in the truck. Tell you what, he tells me. I won’t leave my kids this kind of mess. My wife and I already decided that.

Most American homes contain very little of value beyond the sentiments of the person who purchased them. The contents of a bathroom—from toothbrushes to soap—can’t be reused. Kitchen utensils are typically too beat up to serve anything but the scrap-metal industry. Old CDs, DVDs, books, and media players are generally worthless unless they’re scarce, in good condition, or of interest to collectors. Furniture, unless it’s an antique of value, has a diminishing market, especially if it’s made by Ikea. Used clothing, unless it’s made by a well-known and expensive brand, is often barely competitive with the flood of new garments made in low-cost factories around the developing world. And electronics, from desktop computers to phones, rapidly depreciate into a state of worthlessness—at least to consumers in places where the next upgrade is just a season away.

Few Americans know it better than Sharon Kadet. In the six years she’s worked for Empty the Nest, she’s taken thousands of photos of potential and actual client homes before they’ve been cleaned out. It’s an impromptu, inadvertent, and largely unprecedented archive of American consumption, discreetly contained in Dropbox folders accessed through an iPad she carries everywhere. When she sits down with me at a Caribou Coffee along Highway 169, she places it on the table to her left. As she checks a message, I notice her inbox contains 25,322 emails.

Okay, let’s find a good one. She opens a folder that holds hundreds of additional folders, each labeled by address. Most store between twenty-five and thirty-five photographs of the things filling up the homes of potential and actual clients. For Sharon, the photos fulfill two purposes. First, they allow her to quote a price for a cleanout. Labor and dumpsters are costs; the potential resale value of the stuff in those photos is value that can be deducted from those costs. Second, the photos allow a crew to plan a cleanout, some of which can last for days.

This is a good one, she decides, opening up a folder devoted to a home located north of the Twin Cities. Split-level house, she adds and leans in. From the outside, you know nothing. She scrolls quickly through images of a bedroom dominated by stacked books and a kitchen table piled with binders, and she stops on an image of hundreds of VHS cassettes stacked on shelves, on tables, and stashed in open boxes. She zooms in. They’re all homemade, she notes, pointing at the handwritten labels on the spines. Then she zooms out and points to rows of three-ring binders. I think he cataloged the tapes. This is a very passionate townhouse. A very passionate guy.

Is any of that worth anything?

She leans back and crosses her arms over her black EMPTY THE NEST T-shirt. Homemade VHS tapes, no. Sharon pauses for just a beat. Reuse is what makes Empty the Nest unique in an increasingly competitive cleanout industry. The idea that your stuff isn’t going to be wasted is more important than packing your own vases, she explains.

Why that’s so important is a complicated question. Sharon, with hundreds of cleanouts in her background, has watched the difficulty that clients have in letting go. Yesterday we cleaned out a place, and later the sister called and said he [the client] died at four A.M. She throws up her hands. I don’t know … but coincidence?

Historically, personal identity revolved around religion, civic participation, and pride of (oftentimes small) place. But as those traditional bonds disintegrate in the face of industrialization, urbanization, and secularization, brands and objects become a means to curate and project who we are. Users of iPhones think different than users of Android-enabled phones do. A Volvo station wagon, a brand and model favored by liberal residents of academic communities, isn’t likely to be found in the drive-through at Chick-fil-A, a fast-food chain favored by conservatives.¹ Small acts of consumption add up to a picture of who we are—just ask Google or Facebook, companies that keenly track consumer identities online. And for many Americans, objects packed into a home present the complete curated package.

Like most people in a very new industry, Sharon Kadet didn’t aspire to her current position in home cleanout. She grew up in a middle-class Minneapolis family, attended college, and spent much of her career working for large philanthropic foundations like the United Way. Then, in the late 2000s, her father passed away, and the family hired a company to help her mother transition to a smaller home. The manager of that move eventually founded Empty the Nest in 2011. Not long after, Sharon ran into that move manager at the gym and later looked up what she was doing. It made sense to me from a human standpoint, she says, recalling her first online encounter with Empty the Next. In 2013, Sharon joined the company as a packer. Then she started visiting senior housing communities to market Empty the Nest’s services.

In addition to generating profits, Empty the Nest also generates knowledge. Sharon opens another folder and clicks on a photo. It shows a cluttered basement with a treadmill in the center. Exercise equipment has no value, she says, then clicks through to an image of bookshelves stacked with magazines, many with yellow spines. "Basements full of National Geographics on the shelves. She sighs. People thinking they’re valuable. A moment later we’re on a particular peeve: hide-a-beds. Nobody wants used ones, and they’re dangerous to move. Can’t sell them."

Sharon is aware that talking about the difficulties of her job can make it feel like every cleanout is an episode of Hoarders, the wildly successful American television series about people who compulsively acquire objects and never unload any of them. But not every home or transition from a home is extreme, she reminds me. Most aren’t. Even so, each Empty the Nest client finds themselves in the same position: they have more stuff than they can handle.

    This was entertaining and informative, but the writers first book really expanded my awareness of what America uses and why it is scrapped and sent to China to be torn apart and used to make new crap to sell that can one day go through the same thing or be piled up in a landfill.

    This is a fascinating look at where our American stuff goes when we don't want it any more. Of course, there are the many whose overflow supports the very profitable and ugly storage units that clutter our landscape. And there's the hired angels who come into your home to perform a "Swedish Death Cleanse". But then what? The author follows bundles of clothing from an Arizona Goodwill to a rag ripping company in New Jersey to a sorting room outside Toronto to a market stall in Nogales, Mexico to a shipping container heading for Cotonou, Benin and another for Kandla, India. Used books in Japan, used televisions in Nigeria, used cars in Ghana, fixing your own cellphone via "the repair manual for everything", iFixit of San Luis Obispo, CA, and much more is thoroughly examined. Manufacturers and marketers try forcing us to buy new, but the author makes the case that all global economies and people benefit from repair and replace.Quote: "Debates over whether certain countries and peoples can import or export "waste" are, at their core, debates over whether certain racial groups should have access to material goods and whether they should use and dispose of them in ways that richer, usually white countries prescribe."

    What happens to your stuff when you're done with it? Like many people, I donate used items to thrift stores on a regular basis. I've also spent a fair amount of time in the back rooms of various thrift stores, baling discarded clothing and sorting through donated books. So, I had a little background knowledge, but I learned a lot reading Minter's thorough exploration of the global secondhand trade. This is a fascinating look at the world of stuff, from used bookstores in Japan, to secondhand clothing markets in Benin, to mills in India where woolen goods are shredded and recycled into blankets for disaster relief. Minter is realistic about the fate of some segments of the secondhand market ("The good news," an executive at a rag company jokes darkly, "is that nobody wants to get into this business."), but he's also cautiously optimistic about ways in which the secondhand trade could be improved and supported, seeing it as an essential part of global trade, and the natural solution to the problem of all this stuff that humans have accumulated, especially in the past century. Reading the book made me even less inclined to shop than I normally am (and I'm not much of a shopper), but I found it a fascinating read, and not as depressing as it might have been. If you're intrigued about the ways our used stuff moves around the world, I'd recommend this book. Bonus points if you borrow, rather than buy, it.

    Secondhand, Travels In The New Global Garage Sale, is an in-depth look at what happens to your "stuff" when you dispose of it. Whether it be Goodwill, a "downsizing" service, or wherever. The author travels all over, examining the industries that have popped up to utilize our "cast-offs:. The United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Africa, Southeast Asia, and on and on. Whether it be used clothing in Africa, rag processors in Ohio, child safety seats in Mexico (what a racket this has become, declaring older seats as defective), or electronics in Ghana. It does one's heart good to see that others are utilizing the "stuff" we declare too old or obsolete. The author's travels take him to many cottage industries, and he makes their work very interesting to read about. The author also covers the planned obsolescence built into our products here in the U.S., and the outright sabotage of items by some of our most recognized companies (shame on you, Apple). All in all, this book really opened my eyes to an area that I did not even know existed. It's a very interesting read. And you will learn a lot!
