Kendra J. Williams

It all started with me writing to express my emotions—until I realized that my words actually spoke the silent inner voice of someone else. I started getting excited about writing, and when new ideas would pop up in my mind, I realized this was meant for me: that this was my gift. I have been writing poetry since I was in middle school, and that’s when I realized I wanted to write a book and be published. I have three short stories that I wrote in high school, which I have hidden away. I am a twenty-seven-year-old from a small town in North Carolina that has a vision to one day have a book in the bookstore.

No Longer Single - Kendra J. Williams

    Chapter

    one

A bout time you get married.

    Don’t start Mia.

I’m just saying, she stated shrugging her shoulders.

    Don’t just say anything.

    Stop being dramatic.

    Isla rolled her eyes.

When are we going to meet this mystery man?

    At the wedding, Isla answered.

    Excuse me?

Yep. Ryan already met him. Where were you?

I guess I wasn’t invited out that night.

Girl I can’t help that you stay in the house with your husband 24/7.

    Shut up.

    Oh you, mad?

No, you just make me sick.

Ryan listened on. She was normally the observant friend.

Why do y’all always fuss? Ryan chimed in.

The same reason why you always ask us that same question, Mia answered.

I’m just trying to be a great bride’s maid.

You have to be a great friend first.

    Go to hell, Ryan answered.

Both of y’all have been slacking so hush, Isla answered.

    Excuse you.

You can leave anytime you need to, Isla laughed.

This bridezilla mess needs to stop now. We’re both already married, Ryan stated.

Hold up now. I’m not married yet, Mia answered.

Girl, shut up. You are married. We aren’t stupid.

Sh... this ring is a promise, she answered showing the ring.

A promise to do what? Isla asked.

    Exactly my point, Mia laughed.

You’re off the market, Isla continued.

I don’t know who told you that but carry on, Mia motioned.

Sounds like somebody has some explaining to do.

Sure don’t. I have options, she answered shrugging her shoulders.

    She’s lying, Isla answered.

Not one thing I said was a lie.

    I don’t believe you.

You don’t have to. I know what’s going on with me and my life.

I’m calling you a liar, Isla laughed.

Do y’all remember when calling someone a liar was a curse word? Or was that just in my household? Ryan asked.

No it was in mine too. You know Isla doesn’t have any manners. That’s why it’s taking her so long to get married, Mia stated.

Go to hell, Isla answered flipping her the bird.

    I’ll meet you there.

Ryan started laughing. If I didn’t know any better I would think you two were related. There is no way you two go at each other like this without being related in some way.

Nope. She just gets on my nerves, Mia answered.

Isla got up from the kitchen table and went into the kitchen.

Bring me back another glass of wine, Mia called out.

Do I look like your maid?

Not today you don’t but I would love that glass of wine.

Have you spoken to Randi and Emery?

No, they should be here tomorrow morning.

What do you mean you haven’t spoken to them? I mean Emery is your sister.

Exactly what I said. Just because she’s my sister doesn’t mean that we speak every day and about every thing. She’s grown. I don’t think I missed any words when I said it, Isla laughed.

Yeah. I thought they would be here by now.

Everybody can’t get off at the same time.

I didn’t say they could. I was just making an observation, Mia answered.

We don’t need your observations, Mia.

I’ll give them when I feel like it.

Do you even like the women? Ryan asked.

What kind of question is that?

You always seem to have something to say about either one of them.

I didn’t say anything wrong just now. I only asked when they were getting here, Mia answered.

I mean it is my bachelorette weekend. I need all of you to behave yourselves.

I always behave. You better get Mia’s crazy ass, Ryan answered pointing to her.

I’m on my best behavior. Plus, I like the other ladies. Why would I want to be messy? This isn’t my weekend.

Exactly, now kill the noise and enjoy the festivities.

All I know is your future husband better had hooked us up with a nice time, Ryan stated.

This place isn’t enough indication that this weekend is about to be on and popping? Isla answered turning in circles.

Hell no. It’s hot as hell here.

You need some heat, the sun and a tan, Isla laughed.

And you don’t have any room to talk. You’re looking pale yourself, Mia answered.

Mia stay out of this. Everybody wasn’t blessed with the goddess skin tone that you were, Ryan answered.

I can’t help I was blessed with good genes.

Hold up now. We didn’t say that you were the best looking one. We said your skin tone was popping. Don’t get it twisted, Isla laughed.

I can’t have nothing in this group, Mia answered.

Be happy you’re a part of the group, Ryan chimed in.

What does that supposed to mean? Mia asked getting up from the table with an attitude.

    You know I’m only playing.

No but for real. You always have some kind of undercover slick shit to say to me.

Nope. You got the wrong one. I’ve never said anything about you until now, Ryan answered defending herself.

So who’s been talking shit about me? Spill it, Mia stated.

Isla could feel Mia’s eyes scan over into her direction.

Don’t even ask me. I don’t know what Ryan’s talking about.

Stop lying. Which one of your ugly ass friends has been talking about me?

Isla stood up and shrugged her shoulders. I don’t want any part of what’s going on. I haven’t heard any of the other women speak on you. You need to take that up with Ryan. It sounds like she has an issue with your beauty and not anybody else, she stated walking into the master suite.

Hold up, Mia called out to her.

    Isla didn’t bother stopping.

Did she keep walking like I wasn’t talking to her?

    She sure did.

What about this problem that you have with me.

I don’t have a problem with you. I was playing when I said that, Ryan stated.

I don’t believe you. You stay quiet too much for me anyway. I knew you were always hating on me.

Ha. Hating on you for what? Ryan chuckled.

Isla could hear the two of them going at it.

You two need to be quiet. It’s my weekend and I’m not about to hear you two carry on the entire weekend.

    Shut up, Mia called back.

Isla started walking back to the common area before she decided against it.

I’m not coming back out there. Figure it out, she answered.

We didn’t ask you to come back out here. We aren’t children, Ryan answered.

Both Ryan and Mia looked at each other and started laughing.

Y’all make me sick, Isla yelled.

And we don’t care, Ryan laughed.

Mia stood up and walked to the window of the room and took in all of the atmosphere.

What’s on your mind? Ryan asked standing up to join her.

Nothing, she asked looking over at her.

    Why are you lying?

I’m not. You don’t know me, she chuckled.

Girl, you’re the one that wears all of your emotions on your sleeve. Don’t get an attitude with me. What he do now? she asked.

I don’t even know what you’re talking about, she lied looking off at the waterfront.

You know you should consider finding another hobby because lying isn’t your best quality, she laughed.

Go somewhere. I didn’t ask you for advice.

    And I’m not offering it.

Ryan, why are you like this?

    Like what?

    Too much.

Stepping back, me too much. You’re too much.

You are always acting like you’re the calm friend. I know your ass is always plotting. What you got going on since you’re asking about me?

    I’m chilling.

So what are you still with that guy? What’s his name?

    Don’t try to play me.

I really don’t remember his name.

    Darnell?

Mia gave her a side eye and shrugged her shoulders, yeah I guess that’s him.

You act like I talk about 20 guys around you, Ryan laughed shaking her head.

I honestly thought you were gay.

    Excuse you?

Yeah. I always thought you liked women and not men.

    Shut up lying, Ryan laughed.

    I’m serious.

I know that’s the sad part. Why would you say that?

I don’t know. I’ve never seen you really in girly clothes.

So that makes me gay. Girl you’re crazier than I thought.

    I’m being honest.

You could have kept that honesty to yourself. I didn’t need to hear that second hand judgment, she laughed.

    I’m not being judgmental.

Isla walked in just in time.

What are y’all talking about now?

Both women turned around with attitudes. Ryan walked into the kitchen. Mia went to sit down on the couch.

Bring me a drink when you came in here, Mia called out to Ryan.

Go to hell, she answered grabbing a bottle of wine from the fridge.

Wait a damn minute. What happened? I know I heard you two talking like you had some sense. What happened? Mia, what did your stuck up ass say this time?

Why does it have to be me?

Because I know you. What she say, Ryan?

She said she thought I was gay.

Oh hell, Isla answered placing her face in her hands.

I mean, she answered shrugging her shoulders. There wasn’t a need to lie. I did, she laughed.

Why must you two act like this during  my weekend?

Chile, you act like you don’t have every weekend to cut you. We haven’t seen a weekend since you’ve been engaged that you haven’t cut up. What’s the issue? Why are you drinking so damn much? Mia asked.

    Because I’m getting married.

    "She’s lying.

We all know that. What’s wrong with him? Is his penis little? Is the head game bad? Mia laughed.

Sex doesn’t have anything to do with this, she answered.

Sex has everything to do with it, Mia continued.

Since when? Last time I checked, you were having issues with your sex life.

    Who told you that?

I have my ways. You have way too many sex toys to be talking about somebody else’s sex life.

I have sex toys because I like them thank you very much.

Go to hell with that lie. I know how much you love having body contact. I know having a toy is a turn off for you. So stop with the bs and tell the truth.

I’m not telling you bs. I’m telling you the truth.

Why are you two fussing about sex? Ryan asked laughing.

Mia waved her hand at her. We know that you haven’t had sex in years if ever.

    Who told you that?

    I have my sources.

Girl shut up with that shit. I have sex.

    Toys don’t count.

Ladies listen to us. How did we even get on this topic?

Because y’all are a damn trip.

Isla rolled her eyes and went into the kitchen to fix herself another glass of wine.

    Chapter

    two

W hy are you always running late to the airport? Do you like living like this?

Shut up. You don’t know my life, Randi laughed.

Yes I do. You like living on the edge. Isn’t your life exciting enough without always being late? Emery asked.

Not at the moment. And for your information I’m not always late. That’s just today. Plus, I’m late because you decided to pack three suitcases for a four day trip. Where the hell are you going afterwards?

    Tending, Emery winked.

It’s too early in the morning to be winking at somebody. Your tending to your business shit almost made us miss our flight. Wait until I tell Isla.

She can’t do anything to me. I’m grown.

You act like she’s not your sister though.

    She’s not today, she laughed.

    "Emery you’re full of shit.

Back to you though. I don’t understand you. Why didn’t you get off work earlier and leave yesterday?

Because I actually like my job.

I don’t believe that shit for nothing.

    I do.

Whatever. Which one of her friends don’t you like?

    Randi rolled her eyes.

Exactly. That’s what I thought. Which one is it? Because, I like all of her friends. Even you, she laughed.

I don’t give two rats’ asses if you like me or not. You’re still stuck with me. Me and Isla have been friends since we were little. Don’t even try to come for me.

Group One can start boarding now, she flight attendant called out over the speaker phone.

Saved by the attendant, Randi laughed.

This conversation isn’t over. We still have a layover in Florida. Don’t play with me.

Whatever. I’m not even addressing this anymore. Keep your mouth shut when we get to Mexico too. I’m trying to be drunk and riding one of those natives while I’m there.

    You’re so damn nasty.

    You could only dream.

    I get mine, Emery laughed.

How long is this flight again?

Two hours. I think. The pilot might cut it short, you know they be speeding in the air.

    You got that right.

Emery sat down and looked over at Randi who had her shades on. What are you doing?

    About to catch this nap.

    Are you serious?

Do you know what time it is?

    Yes. It’s what 7?

Exactly. I don’t wake up until 8:30 on a good day. I need my rest. I can’t be looking like a racoon when I get there.

    Too late for that.

Shut up, she answered lifting up her shades. You just worry about that extra friend on your face.

Yeah, my friend decided she wanted to join me this weekend.

    Too bad for you.

No it’s not. I’m good. I live to survive another pregnant free month, she laughed.

As long as you don’t have an attitude. We’re good.

You won’t see me long enough to even worry about my attitude if I have one, Emery laughed.

You got that right, she answered sticking her tongue out.

The ladies made it safely to their layover where they were greeted by a storm.

Look at this shit, Randi stated staring out the window.

    This better not delay us.

You’ve been traveling enough to know that this storm is going to set us back.

Shit, Emery whispered dragging her bag.

Hold up, E. Why are you dragging your bag like that?

I’m mad as hell. Something told me to leave yesterday. Naw you need a travel buddy. Why didn’t you check the weather?

Look now don’t get an attitude with me. I can’t help it’s raining.

You knew this shit was going to happen.

How? she asked stepping back. I’m going to act like you didn’t say that. I can’t help that it’s raining.

Yes you can. You should have checked the weather.

Girl fuck you and this weather.

I know I’m wrong but I’m not apologizing, she thought to herself finding somewhere to sit down.

"I’m going to give you this one but that’s it. Don’t let that shit happen again. I don’t care if you are Isla’s sister. I
