The Long Lost War - Jeff Walker

    1 We Are Of Earth

It always starts with a dream.

A dream about a woman standing on the edge of a cliff; Sun-drenched sky with clouds up above, with a big rolling ocean below. I can almost feel the salt-water air caressing my cheek as I slowly walk up to her. Either she’s too caught up in the view or she doesn’t see me; I can only see the back of her. The low cut white dress she has on flutters in the wind.

A long silken scarf dances around her like a pair of angelic wings. I gaze upon her with my eyes; I want to caress that soft-flowing, dark brown curly hair swaying in the breeze. Is this truly a dream? It never felt so real to me as it does now.

I try to call her name but the sound of the ocean crashing on the shores drowns out my voice. I walk closer to her, not knowing if she heard me or I’m being ignored on purpose. Perhaps this woman doesn’t know me at all, but I know in my heart—that I love her. How or why I have this feeling, I have no clue. It’s like she’s the centre of gravity and I’m falling into her.

Knowing who she is, I call her name out… but I can’t hear it. My voice had become muffled, as if I spoke underwater or from behind a closed door. Why can’t I hear it? Why won’t my mind let me know who she is?  While I might not have heard her name, she did…  the beautifully sunset drenched sky filled with the gulls calling in the distance wasn’t enough to keep her attention.

Not even water smashing on the surface beneath dulled my voice to her. Now those beautiful eyes I yearned to look upon turned my way. The wind covered her face with that luscious brown curly hair and teased my desire to see her identity. Only the eyes are visible to me—yes, so visible to me.

They were crystal blue as the water itself, that shimmered and spiralled like a galaxy. This is destiny calling to me… I must find this woman. She allowed me to get closer, to bring her body close to mine and waited for me to reveal her face.

But as I brushed away those locks of hair, the sound of the ocean abruptly changed to that of a blaring alarm. The urgency of it made me look all around and try to pin-point the location. I winced from the loud pulsation from it, but then I heard more… something else with it.

There were screams of people overlapping the distant call of the birds and the ocean waves crashing. I feel the pull of something. My body feels heavy. My eyes flutter wildly as bright lights constantly flash, causing my dream woman to vanish along with the pleasant scenery. The vision… the dream…  gone.

Now there’s nothing but the dark void of space and debris falling into it. It makes no sense… my mind tries to adjust to the rapid change. Where am I? Who am I? What is happening? I’m stuck inside a frost laden tube—cold, naked and hairless;  the glass separating me from the outer section makes a loud thumping noise.

I’m startled to see a man (looking just like me) desperately trying to grip onto it. Others become visible to me as the frightened individual’s hand wiped off some frost from the glass. They’re being sucked away, thousands upon thousands of them, clenching their throats, kicking their legs and dying quickly as the sudden airless environment kills them.

The one still trying to hold on to my stasis tube suddenly scooped out into swirling stars glistening the dark void. A ship—I’m on a spaceship! A spaceship with a gaping hole and sucking out anything or anyone in the room. I could feel the pressure of the vacuum, the glass starting to fracture, and air leaking out of it. This was not a dream… but a nightmare.

I could see brilliant flashes of light and movement in the darkness. There were spaceships in the distance battling it out; massive vessels with laser fire streaming across every direction. I gasped for air, which was depleting fast, and tried to remain in my tube as I frantically used my palms to contain the continuous cracks forming on the glass.

Panicked and scared, I tried to look for anything to secure me. The crackling of glass grew more intense—no, I don’t want to die like this, not like this! The bodies floating out in the open made me wince with fear; I don’t want to be next… no, please…  not me! The glass is giving way! I can’t hold on any longer! I can’t—I can’t—I’m going to die!

My eyes pop open in shock. An alarm blares away as I hear myself breathing heavily. A clock built into the rusted wall beside me shows the time. It stops as I smack it with my hand and fades down to a less brilliant illumination. The confusion is all I have at the moment.

Reality sinks in as I rise in a full sweat. I’m in a bed; a small narrow rusting bunk bed with dark green sheets and half-sized pillow. My panicked breath sounds laboured as I try to understand what’s going on. It was a nightmare. It was a dream. It was both fantasy and reality. I come to grips with where I am—with whom I am.  As I slowly shuffle out of my small cot of a bunk bed, I see my reflection in the slightly tarnished chrome-looking wall of my room.

I rub my short stubbled brown hair on my head, the look of horror in my eyes as it registers; I’m a soldier on a military spaceship. My room (if you can call it that) was a standard type for a lower rank like myself with barely any space at all. I approached the built-in unit sink a few meters away from me. Like I said, small, but cozy—some would say.

I switch out my sweat drenched clothes for fresh ones (choice green as always, got to love military regs) slap on the standard issue black boots, and give myself the usual speech to inspire me.

This is the life we lead John 999801, so shut up.

Time to start my day and head out to the mess hall; my roommate on the upper bunk mutters grumpily to me to turn off the light as I leave. I give her a playful slap on the leg hanging over the edge and comply to the groggy request. I would have preferred a male
