When the ice and snow of a long Adirondack winter begin to melt, life stirs in the water and in the soil. Yes, birds begin to return and early butterflies such as the mourning cloak flutter, and these catch the lion’s share of our attention. But it’s small things at our feet and underwater that make up the greater portion of the awakening biomass, a portion that includes a lively array of annelids.
