I don’t want any children with you, don’t you understand that? Matt said as he turned around and reached for her wrist.

She was hysterically crying and looking up at him while trying to speak in between her sobs. Matt, it just happened, I always take the pills I swear, it feels like it is meant to happen, I love you and I want this child with you, please.

He was disgusted by her ranting, he could not be bothered to hide it. You are just a stupid woman, how could you even think like that, plus you are such a shitty liar, it happened twice before, did you take the pills before?

No I did not, the first time I was too young, you were the first ever my love. Nikki said as she trembled beside him.

He whirled around, Shut up, do not call me your love, I do not want to hear such crap from you. Never say that again.

She continued as though in a trance, as if she could not hear him and what he was saying to her. The second time I was drunk, and whenever you asked to abort I did, this time I want to keep the baby, please Matt.

No, wrong, you had an accident and killed him, so do not put that on me. God, Nikki, your lies are getting out of hand.

Well, that was thanks to you, wasn’t it Matt, wasn’t it? She was starting to yell a little now.

No, you could not stop your bad habits, the drugs, escaping all the time into a high oblivion because you did not want to face yourself, can’t you see that you are too weak to be a parent. How would you raise a child?

Nikki looked up at him now, eyes dry and tears dried up on her face, And can’t you see you are being too harsh, are you even a human being, I changed, I forgave you, but you show me no empathy.

He was done with this conversation, then do it now, abort this thing, I will give you the money and ask someone to get you to the doctor.

She shook free of him, no, I will not, please do not talk like that, this could be my last chance ever to have a child, if I abort it I may never get children at all.

Are you crazy, just take a look at yourself, do you think you will be a good mother at all, you are broke, you just started working thanks to me, you used to be a drug addict.

Yes, but now I am not, all of that is in the past and you cannot keep dredging up my past. I am keeping this child Matt, I am not going back to the life you brought me out from. So what now, are you going to kill me or what Matt? I will not tell the baby that you are the father, since you do not want it.

Shut up Nikki, if you insist on keeping that child, you will have nothing from me, you will not see my face ever again, and you will lose your job, you will even sell your house, you will be a homeless mother and then they will take that kid away from you anyway. I made you and I will destroy you, I will tell everybody to refuse you and no one will hire you ever again.

Nikki began to shout even as the tears ran hot down her face, get out; I hate you in every way.

I am telling you, don’t be stupid, abort that child. Matt said, enraged by her tears and her defiance.

Out, get out, I hate you.

He got out and slammed the door behind him. He got in his car and began to drive even as thoughts swirled around in his head. What am I going to do now? My wife wants a child but she cannot seem to get pregnant, and here was Nikki with a child that I do not want, she is crazy, I swear she does not even think. he huffed to himself as he sped out.

Back in the apartment, Nikki looked at her belly, she was only 3 weeks gone, she patted her belly and whispered, I will keep you till you get out strong and healthy dear baby, I will give you whatever you need, and I will make you proud of me. I know I made really bad choices in my life but now I am correcting it all for you, I will keep you, and I will work and you will have the life I always wanted to have for myself and even better. You are the one who makes me worthy. She kept speaking to her child as she cried, till she fell asleep.

The next morning, Matt woke up next to his wife, he got up to get ready for work and together they went down for breakfast. Eve started talking, so we have that appointment to get the embryo implantation, are you ready? she said.

Yeah sure, it is tomorrow. Matt replied as he wolfed down a spoon full of eggs.

What if it does not work, what will we do? Eve asked with worry lines etched across her forehead. She is always worried about this stuff and Matt was hoping she would get used to the possibility of no kids.

Well, nothing honey, we will do nothing and live happily. After all, many couples choose not to have kids at all, but then don’t worry, we are doing our best so it will work. He winked at her and she loosened up a little.

Eve looked at Matt, the only thing that might make us bear this boring life together is a child ok, like it or not, I want a child, I just want one and so if this plan is not going to work we will adopt a child and I will talk to my dad regarding that, I think he might be able to help us find a newborn baby for adoption.

Matt sighed and took her small hands in his, My dear, I hope it really works I want a kid to raise with you, plus there is no need to bother your dad, we will figure it out together and I do not mind adoption at all if you want it.

Eve smiled and leaned into him, ok, we will see.

He left for work and met his father-in-law who is the GM of the agency, Mr. Dwight. It was an important meeting and as usual his father-in-law was a force to be reckoned with, after the meeting ended a few hours later Mr. Dwight beckoned to Matt, So, I hear that tomorrow you and Eve are going to the fertility clinic and after that you will come to my home, there is no need to show up at work at all, you can give all the missions to others Matt, all I want is my baby girl to be happy because I noticed she has not been lately.

Matt looked at his wife’s father in earnest, we want that child eagerly, and she has been thinking about that so much lately, last time we tried that, it did not work but hopefully it works this time.

Dwight looked at me sternly, and if it does not work? What then?

If it does not work, I think adoption will be a good idea, she even suggested that. Matt said.

Dwight looked surprised, adoption, did she say that?

Yes. Matt knew his father-in-law will be opposed to that; he was a traditional man after all.

Ok, we will see tomorrow.

At the clinic Eve was getting ready and Matt could feel himself getting so nervous, he was holding her hand and smiling down at her and trying to comfort her by telling her that everything will be fine, but after she got in, while he was waiting for her, he suddenly thought of Nikki, he found that he even wanted to call her but he just wiped the idea out of his head, finally Eve came out and got dressed and they both went to the doctor’s office to have a talk.

The doctor smiled kindly at both of them as he said, now all that we can do is be patient and try not to stress yourself out and only healthy food please, no alcohol, till we meet next time.

Matt extended his hand to shake the doctor, Thank you doctor, hopefully we would have that precious child at that time.

Eve looked at him surprised about how spontaneously he had just declared those words like he really wanted it, he looked happy for the first time in a long time. They left the hospital for her to dad’s home and spent the rest of the day, and then they went back home.

A week went by since Nikki had her confrontation with Matt, she worked as a fashion design assistant in the agency that Matt recommended her for, she was waiting for the moment that she would get fired like he had promised her but nothing happened. She had tried to get any information regarding the issue from anyone she met who might have heard about Matt but she got nothing.

Another 3 weeks went by and the doctor confirmed that Eve was not pregnant, she got depressed and Matt’s life turned into hell, darling, please stop drinking and crying. He said to her one evening.

She whirled to face him, anger shooting from her eyes, You shut up, you never wanted that kid at all so do not pretend that you did.

We will have the kid you want okay.

Eve started laughing out loud, and how is that, your genius?

Matt simply said, Adoption.

Yes, what else can we do? she replied.

We might get the child of one of those teenagers who get pregnant and she would not even want the child so she might want to abort it, we will pay her to keep it and then we will get it and once she gives birth, we take the kid. The baby will know no parents but us; we will be the family you want.

Eve was listening to him carefully now, happily as well, tears were running down her eyes but she was happy, Yes it is a great idea; I did not know that you wanted a child as well.

Of course I do. He replied as he lifted her hand to his lips and brushed a slight kiss to it.

Now how do we find anyone who might carry our child, we might talk to dad regarding that, tell him your idea and he will find a way. She said fervently.

Dear, trust me I can do that I can get our baby myself please just trust me.

Eve held him and looked up into his eyes, her eyes dancing with happiness, Yes I trust that you will get our child.

Matt smiled and added, Just tell your dad that I made you that happy.

Nikki heard her doorbell ringing; she cleaned her hands on her apron and left the kitchen to open the door. As she pulled the door open, she was surprised to see Matt.

May I come in?

You came to threaten me again or what?

Let me in and then you know. Matt said with a smirk.

She pushed the door open wide, Ok come in.

I think we are both mad at each other.

Before he could say more, she stepped up and said, I will keep the baby even if I am gonna be a homeless mother.

Matt smiled, she was stubborn, and he had missed it. Keep it, I came to tell you to keep it, Nikki, I missed you so much.

She narrowed her eyes skeptically at him, I do not believe you, what horrible idea do you have in mind, you look like you really want me to keep the child.

Nikki, how could I know that I am the father of the kid every time you got pregnant previously? And even now, how can I be sure.

What? You are the father every time I got pregnant Matt. After the rehab, I met no one and I tried to stay away far from everything that can drag me back to that gutter, you are the only one I met and kept meeting. Matt, you are the only one I loved, I even loved being pregnant with your child even if you did not want it, and I always listened to you when you told me to abort, except in this case. Don’t you realize how much I love you?

Keep the child if it is mine.

It is yours; I assure that it is yours. She said as tears slipped down her cheeks.

Matt nodded, Then take good care of the both of you, I want both of you healthy, why are you crying?

Nikki smiled through her tears, I just cannot believe that you want a baby with me after you told me you do not want it with me, I’m so happy I feel like I am a good person for once in my life Matt.

I am happy that you are happy. Matt said.

Nikki ran into his arms.

I promise I will do whatever you ask, Matt, I will never tell anyone that you are the father, I just would love to have you around us. She said as she held on to him.

Matt was always taken aback by the love he saw radiating from her, Why do you love me, Nikki? Why? I am 20 years older than you, no one loves me and I did not want to have any kids because I know that even that kid will never love me, I am not a good father figure but you still want me?

I don’t know why but I just love you, you will be my love and the father of my baby. I can be a good mother and you can be a good father.

Matt sighed and held her close, smelling in the scent of cinnamons all over her, she must have been baking, if you say so.

So I was thinking that if it is a boy, I would name him Sebastian and if it is a girl I would like to name her Tiaré. Nikki said.

After your grandmother, Matt said.

Nikki smiled, Yes, you remember.

I have a good memory, so it is Tiaré or Sebastian, ok dear, now I have to leave so just take care and work well but don’t get exhausted.

Nikki’s smile faded, please stay for a little while longer so we can have dinner together like a make-up dinner.

Matt shook his head, I can’t because Eve is waiting for me to have dinner with her.

Okay, promise me you will have dinner with me next time.

Yes, I will call you and come for dinner for sure, see you gorgeous. he left and she felt defeated like she did every time she heard his wife’s name.

Next morning as usual  she gets ready thinking about how  different she looked in the past, but she pushed all those  thoughts away smiling  at her new self in the mirror. Now she is a mother and working to be that good mother like the one  she never had, and goes in a hurry to work.

Nikki, Nikki, come here now. The voice barked.

She ran fast into her boss’ office, Yes sir?

Mr. Callahan, her boss looked up at her and barked, Did you finish the alterations on the model yet?

Nikki blanched, I am doing it now sir.

Her boss was livid, "Oh dear lord, what is wrong with you, I hired you just because Matt
