    Chapter 1

    The Beginning / History

    The story of Reclaiming and its history have many threads and many forces that have driven it to the place it is today. To attempt to explain it would be to miss something, to not tell all of the stories from different perspectives. Yet, remembering where we came from is an important place to begin.

    At most rituals, those leading the ritual will ask if there is anyone who has not been to a Reclaiming ritual before. When there are many hands that go up, the story is told something like this:

    Reclaiming began in the 1980s with Starhawk and Diane Baker teaching classes in San Francisco, California, USA to people who wanted to do their own rituals. These classes started as the Elements of Magick class, informed by Starhawk’s ‘The Spiral Dance: a Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess’ (later referenced as ‘Spiral Dance’ in this book) and the themes of ‘Dreaming the Dark’. In these classes, people began to experience the wonder of collective magick, the way to practice magick, and how to build rituals in groups or individually.

    From there, the students were coming and completing the class, and then wanting more. Since Starhawk had studied with Victor and Cora Anderson of the Feri Tradition, the tools of Iron Pentacle and Pearl Pentacle became new classes to offer. And eventually, Rites of Passage became another
