About this ebook

Schoolteacher Sienna Schultz is still stinging from a bad breakup with her fiancé when she finds herself unexpectedly infatuated with a new man. Sienna's peaceful summer is shattered when a series of suspicious events unfold. Her aunt's suppliers refuse to sell to her, putting the future of the shop in jeopardy. Then, when the store is vandalized, they wonder if someone is out to harm not only the business, but Sienna and her aunt as well.

Jake offers to help uncover who's behind the incidents, which brings the two of them closer together. Can Sienna trust him…or is she headed for another heartbreak?

Strawberry Sundae Delights - Peggy Chambers

    Inc.

Now, Betty. I’m prepared to double my offer. With that much money, you can start another business and we’ll both be rich.

The answer is no. Betty gestured with the knife in hand that he should leave.

We’ll see. Big Bob finished his dessert then stood. I’ll be back. We’ll be here all week long. I’ll wear you down. You might as well take the best offer I can make.

Sienna stiffened, hoping her aunt would stay cool. She glanced at Jake, who regarded Aunt Betty and Big Bob. He’d paused with the spoon halfway to his mouth, lowered it, and wiped his mouth.

Well, a shop full of women won’t stop Big Bob, Bob said and cocked one eyebrow.

The room grew quiet. The only sound was chairs scooting across the floor as Big Bob’s wife tugged the children out the door promising them more ice cream later.

We’ll see. He smiled a sinister smile.

Jake stood and cleared his throat. Sir, I think the lady said no. His blue eyes darkened, and silence fell as the men faced each other.

Bob sized Jake up and then considered Betty and her knife.

Like I said, we’ll see. Bob dropped the napkin on the table and left the shop. As the door shut, Jake retook his seat.

Spooning peach ice cream into his mouth, he smiled. So good, he said as if nothing had happened. Then again, everything is.

    Chapter 1

Sienna stared at her face in the mirror. Reflected back were emerald green catlike eyes, a fragile chin, small nose, and fair skin—dotted with brownish freckles. Thousands of reddish-brown freckles. Her mother called them sienna-colored. Hence her name. According to Webster’s, Sienna is an earth pigment containing iron oxide and manganese oxide. In its natural state, it is yellow-brown and is called raw sienna. When heated, it becomes burnt sienna. And her skin often burned in the sun, leaving the freckles the hue of burnt sienna.

Her ex-fiancé said her heart-shaped face was fashioned like a strawberry and covered with sprinkles. He thought it cute. So, her freckles reminded him of seeds. How sweet.

That was not the only reason he was now her ex-fiancé.

She really hated those freckles. There wasn’t enough makeup in the world to cover them. They made her appear as a schoolgirl. And she was not a schoolgirl. In fact, she was a schoolteacher. Except in the summer when she was out of work. Or would be soon if she didn’t get a move on. She twisted the locks of long, red curls into a tight bun and pinned it. One thing about working in an ice cream shop in the summer, there was no dress code.

A schoolteacher during the winter, she needed a summer job. And there were few on Sandhill Island. Thanks to Aunt Betty though, she was employed this summer—and every summer in the future—if she could help keep the business afloat.

Slipping into flip-flops, she raced out the door in shorts and a tank top, grabbing her purse along the way. She ran down the sandy street to the downtown area of Sandhill Island. The streets were almost always covered with sand from the relentless wind off the ocean.

The small tourist island off the coast of Corpus Christi was a couple of miles long and about a mile wide. Few people drove a car. Walking was faster and there was no need to find a parking place. Parking lots were rare on Sandhill Island.

Sienna raced up the steps of the deck in front of the building that sat at the end of the block. She maneuvered around lemon yellow bistro tables and gigantic turquoise flowerpots overflowing with petunias. Yanking open the door she stepped into the artificially cool shop which was already humming with activity. The sign on the door read Auntie’s Ice Cream Shack—Home of the World-Famous Strawberry Sundae.

    Morning, Aunt Betty, she
