Chapter One
Liane peered into the mirror as she slid the bright red lipstick over her lips, squeezing them together for even coverage. She took a step back to look over the full effect. The short, black sexy witch costume hugged her figure tight, emphasizing all her curves, and was missing only one thing: the black pointed hat. She picked it up and pulled it over her loose brown curls, poking her tongue out in concentration as she secured it in place with a couple of pins.
Perfect.
She took a deep breath to still the butterflies dancing in her stomach and headed out to join the buzz of noise in the rest of the house.
Oh, my God, you look stunning!
Ali, dressed as a zombie with a very realistic looking gash down the side of her face, squealed her delight. We’re going to have so much fun.
She picked up two bowls of chips and nodded to the bowl of punch, suitably spiked with a collection of alcohol and sweet liquors. Can you carry that?
Liane nodded and picked up the heavy bowl, carefully following Ali into the lounge room to deliver it, without spilling a single drop, to the trestle tables they had set up along one wall.
This looks amazing.
Liane scanned the feast before her. Curried egg eyeballs filled one plate, miniature jack-o-lantern-shaped chocolates on another, and yet another had chocolate hedgehog spiders. Cracker biscuit fingers, complete with slivered almond fingernails, were waiting to be dipped into a blood-red tomato paste, and a too-bright green guacamole.

Ali grinned. Caitlin did most of the Halloween-themed food. I’m just responsible for the chips and drinks. Oh, and most of the decorations.
A spooky laugh echoed through the room, and Ali’s back straightened.
That’ll be the doorbell,
she said. I’ll be back, okay?
