When you're made of chocolate, you'd think life would be pretty darn sweet. Literally. But for young teenage Chips, his cocoa-based society is locked in an endless war with the Strawberry people. Curious about the pink and tangy land beyond the mountains, Chips ventures into enemy territory where he meets a Strawberry girl named Coco (who actually is pretty darn sweet). Soon, Chips realizes he's gone too far – and not just because he left home.

He's made friends with the enemy.

Now, to save his newfound friendship (and stop the enemy camp from turning him into a S'mores ingredient), Chips must find a way to end the war between their people. There's only one way he knows how: travel to The Fountain of Know-it-All. Joined by Chips' brother and Coco's sister and close friend, they battle their way across an ocean filled with deadly creatures and deadlier pirates. But when their quest takes an unexpected turn for the worse, saving their friendship becomes saving each other – and discovering the real reason why their people are at war once and for all.

ONCE I HAD A DREAM, in it someone said to me, You can achieve happiness in others by giving them something. And he made it clear that giving them something did not mean only material goods. It could also mean giving them advice, time, affection, values, respect and so forth. When you give to others, you are no longer a follower—you become a leader.

I would like to thank God, for the experience while creating this massive chocolate adventure. I would like to thank my editors, Brenda Rusch, and Kristin Waller, for helping me in the process of copyediting and proofreading. Thanks to my sister Jetty, my wife Desiree, and friend Rimi Cooper for beta reading and testing the books. I want to dedicate this series to my daughter Hailey, and my twin boys Ethan and Liam, and my nieces Rebecca and Sarah, plus my nephew Hezekiah Otoniel.

I would also like to dedicate this adventure to anyone who has ever dreamed of something more, something larger than life. It is a human need to sometimes escape from reality. This is why we dance, swim, listen to music, read and participate in other activities. Just as it is important to feed our bodies, it is also necessary to feed our imagination. The more you feed it, the more it grows.

Certain situations can arise at any given moment and change your whole perspective of life, forever.

The Chocolate People

When I was young, my mother used to tell me that life was sweet, but now that I’m older, I realize that life only gets bitter with time. Life can be so unexpected. I remember one time I was so hungry, and I found a bright red cherry that had fallen from a tree. I took a big bite out of it, and it was incredibly delicious. While I was enjoying my cherry, I happened to look at the fruit where I had taken that bite. To my nasty surprise, there was half of a big fruit worm. That was so gross! I tried to spit out the rest of the delicious cherry I had bitten. I was so disgusted. Do you want to know the worst part? I don’t even know if I bit the head or the butt of that fruit worm! Not that it really matters.

My name is Chips and I’m a citizen of the Chocolate people. We Chocolate people believe that my people and the Strawberry people were all created equal by our creators. We believe that our creators are giants that live somewhere else, and they will come back for all of us. Someday soon, they shall take us to a better place.

The Strawberry people believe in something else—something totally different from our belief. They believe that we were all grown from plants. This disagreement in our beliefs is the reason the Chocolate people and the Strawberry people are always at war.

Ever since I can remember, there has always been war between the two nations—Chocolate City and Strawberry City. The Strawberry people are also chocolate people, but they have a different flavor—Strawberry Chocolate. They are pink in color and have a sweet, Strawberry scent.

Thanks to the intervention of the Marshmallow Messengers, we have been able to temporarily resolve our differences. The Marshmallow Messengers are special beings that come from above every now and then. They bring special messages to our people.

Because of the ongoing wars, we created special laws that forbid a Chocolate person from going into Strawberry territory. The same goes for a Strawberry person; he or she can’t go into Chocolate territory. It’s also forbidden for anyone in the Chocolate colony to interact with the Strawberry people, and the same goes for Strawberry people interacting with any Chocolate person. The only beings that are allowed to interact with both the Chocolate and Strawberry people are the Marshmallow Messengers.

Many years ago, it was prophesied by a Marshmallow Messenger that a great leader would be born who would unite the Chocolate people with the Strawberry people. The only problem is that the Messenger didn’t say from which colony the leader would arise. For many years my ancestors tried to unite the two colonies but failed. The war still continues between our nations, and I wonder when it will stop. When will both sides come together as one and realize that we were all created equal?

I don’t have a regular social life like the other Chocolate boys. My only concern is the future. I only care about the unity of our nations, because until we come to an agreement, there will be no peace in our lands.

I guess one good thing is that mountains divide the Chocolate people’s city and the Strawberry people’s city. Sometimes when I’m alone, I travel north to the mountains and cross over to Strawberry City. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before—the smell and the colors are amazing. Where I live in Chocolate City, everything is always the same everywhere. That’s why I have to get away sometimes—to contemplate the beauty of a different city.

If I were to get caught traveling to the enemy city, it could be the end for me. But going there is worth the risk. The Chocolate carnival will be in town tomorrow, so I’ll use the opportunity to travel again. While everyone is busy preparing and thinking about the carnival, I’ll travel north and visit Strawberry City once more. If everything goes according to plan, this will be my seventh visit to the city.

Every once in a while, the carnival comes to Chocolate City. When this happens, most of the adults become very busy with preparations. I always take the opportunity to sneak away to Strawberry City. My parents weren’t mature enough to visit the carnivals in previous years, so they would usually Chocolate-sit the children of other Chocolate people. By law, Chocolate people who are mature enough have to attend these gatherings at the carnivals.

I’ve never attended a carnival, and I’m not supposed to—it’s only for mature Chocolate people. The strange thing is that no one really knows what happens at the carnivals.

Something very weird happens at these carnivals, but no one really talks about it. My city is full of young Chocolate people, and many mature people have disappeared at these carnivals. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the conflicts between our people and the Strawberry people, or if it has something to do with the Marshmallow Messengers; but when I become mature enough, I’ll go and find out what happens at these carnivals.

I was always very happy about it, even though I couldn’t go to the carnivals. I am too young to attend, but at least my parents can go and have a great time. After many years of waiting, my parents are finally mature enough to attend the carnival for the very first time. They’re the closest people to me that will ever get to visit this place. Maybe they can tell me all about it when they get home.

But if my parents are going to the carnival, that means I’ll have to stay home with my younger brother. He’s a real pain sometimes, but I’m the only one who could stay home with him. Unless
