ELENA UPTON

After nearly thirty years of research and study with some of the finest holistic medical doctors world-wide Upton is curating her knowledge and experience into an on-going eBook series, as well as the print books THE ALTERNATIVE, Your Family's Guide to Wellness; Volumes I & II. Her story... "As a wife and mother, I was frustrated by the choices available to me for my own health care and that of my family. When I discovered Homeopathy in 1988 I knew I had found a better way. Going back to college when I had the responsibility of a family was not easy, but I knew it would be worth it. Within a relatively short period of time, I found answers to my health issues, that of my sons, and also my husband. It was like opening a magical toolbox and I wanted everyone to know this toolbox existed. With the support of my family, I was able to spend more than a decade studying not only Homeopathy, but German Biological Medicine, Gemmotherapy, Organotherapy, Phenolic Therapy, and more. Opening a clinic gave me the experience of understanding the power of what I had learned." Training... The journey began at The British Institute of Homeopathy where Upton trained with Trevor Cook, previous Homeopath to the Queen of England, and other giants in the field. This solid foundation was followed by a Masters, then Doctorate program at Curentur University with more exceptional Homeopaths including Dr. Roger Morrison, Dr. Jonathan Shore, Dr. Richard Moskowitz, and many others. Further education continued with a two-year Master Clinician Course with the well-known Homeopath, author, and lecturer, Louis Klein of Canada. The next ten years included seminars, workshops, and lectures with Dr. Rajan Sankaran of India, Dr. Massimo Mangialovori, M.D. of Italy, Dr. Jan Scholten, M.D., and Robin Murphy, N.D., to name a few. Upton developed a successful clinic, 'The Holistic Resource Center' in Southern California for a number of years with her then partner Dr. Craig Wagstaff (1955-2012). Her practice extends to include many modern uses of Homeopathy, as well as German Biological Medicine and other holistic modalities. "Only you can heal you. It can be liberating to transition from a system of medical management to self-directed health and wellness." -The Author

    THE ALTERNATIVE - ELENA UPTON

    INTRODUCTION

THE ALTERNATIVE: Your Family’s Guide to Wellness—Volume I, First-Aid & Common Conditions takes you on a journey into understanding and utilizing the most well-known and accepted methods of natural, holistic, and alternative medicines available today. It serves as a reference manual to readily find complementary methods of treating hundreds of First-Aid and Common Conditions for you and your loved ones of all ages.

THE ALTERNATIVE: Your Family’s Guide to Wellness—Volume II, Dis-EASE takes you on a similar journey, albeit within the scope of more serious health conditions.

It is actually an oxymoron for me, as a Homeopath, to write a book about dis-ease. The reason being that Homeopathy does not treat any particular disease, it treats the person! The brilliance of Homeopathic Medicine is to find a correct match from the over 4,000 remedies available that best suits the totality of symptoms presented.

Disease, whether it be a contagion or something chronic that developed over time, presents itself differently in different people. The illness takes hold in your weakest areas and wreaks havoc from there. For this reason, each person may need a different remedy or remedies from within a group that covers the totality of that perceived disease.

Let’s take viral diseases as an example, since they are so rampant in this day and age. If I have severe chills, a pounding headache, heavy eyelids and extreme fatigue; and you present with diarrhea, nausea and fever we would need to be treated with different remedies that address each of our symptoms…even though we both have contracted the same virus.

According to Global Health Industries; "Chronic diseases and conditions are on the rise worldwide. An aging population and changes in societal behavior are contributing to a steady increase in these common and costly long-term health problems.

"The middle class is growing; and with urbanization accelerating, people are adopting a more sedentary lifestyle. This is pushing obesity rates and cases of diseases such as diabetes upward. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chronic disease prevalence is expected to rise by 57% in 2020. Emerging markets will be hardest hit, as population growth is anticipated to be most significant in developing nations. Increased demand on healthcare systems due to chronic disease has become a major concern.

"Another rising health concern is global pandemics. The pandemics of the past decade have clearly demonstrated the speed at which infections spread across the globe. Ebola, SARS, MERS, H1N1, (and most recently COVID-19) demand coordinated and agile healthcare responses.

Pandemics will in all likelihood exert periodic and significant disruptive pressure on health systems. Healthcare organizations across the globe need to be ready to work together to contain outbreaks quickly when they occur.

Understand that the ideas of Global Health Industries follow the widely accepted path of drugs and vaccines as the only acceptable solution to today’s health issues.

Are pharmaceutical drugs with their myriad of side effects our only answer? Will vaccination en masse be a part of the new-normal for all humans?

The medical science of today is just that…the science of today. There was a time when the infinite wisdom of scientists believed bloodletting was the cure-all. This was followed by another widely accepted medical treatment; large doses of mercury (one of the most toxic substances on the planet) leading to mercury poisoning that resulted in massive numbers of deaths. (Mercury is still used today as an ingredient in a number of vaccines?!)

Prescription drugs are the third leading cause of death in America after Heart Disease and Cancer!

As you continue to read in Chapter II, HOMEOPATHY, you will learn that there is a long history of natural substances that have effectively and efficiently dealt with deadly illnesses that appear from time to time throughout history. There are also thousands of remedies that cover acute and chronic illnesses that come into our lives regularly.

YOUR best defense for the best possible treatment is knowledge! When you educate yourself about the options available to you it enables you to make informed decisions. Knowledge leads to power; the power to join in and unite against the next wave of bad chemical-based medicine that scientists believe they got right this time. (And they are coming!) You’ll know better and can voice discontent only if you have the truth about natural methods of health care.

The monopolization of a single paradigm is accompanied by the formation of totalitarian thinking structures.

What exactly does this mean and how does it relate to the treatment of disease?

When we monopolize a single idea, thought or preference, we block out the possibility of any other ideas. Once all other ideas are ignored or dismissed that single paradigm becomes the standard. Once it becomes the standard, it becomes the worldview.

This is exactly what has happened in the area of medicine over the last one hundred-plus years and why any form of ‘natural’ medicine, which was once conventional medicine, has been blocked from the masses as a viable method of treatment.

Between these pages are protocols you probably have not seen, and certainly will not hear about from your allopathic doctor (or on the nightly news). Protocols freely utilized by millions worldwide in countries outside the U.S. where there does not exist the same prejudice against substances skillfully prepared having been provided by Mother Nature. In the U.S. chemical drugs are the new God. This concept, coupled with a system of medicine for profit brings us to where we are today in the advancement of modern medicine (or lack thereof) in America. We are the only county on the planet whose system of medicine is profit-based. For this we can thank President Richard M. Nixon and his signing into law the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973.

Even though Homeopathy, and other forms of natural medicine continue to be suppressed and even maligned, they continue to shine in the treatment of many illnesses… over and over! Pharmaceutical drugs suppress, while natural remedies work with the immune system to bring about balance.

THE ALTERNATIVE: Your Family’s Guide To Wellness—Volume II, Dis-EASE, brings hope, when you thought there was none, as well as affordable alternatives to many treatments within the ‘conventional’ realm. Feel free to discuss the protocols contained herein with your qualified alternative health practitioner and make adjustments as your doctor sees fit for your specific circumstances.

Be aware that you do not have to make the decision to use only natural medicine over Western allopathic medicine. It is possible, if you choose, to blend practices under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. For some, this is the most reasonable place to start.

    PART I

    THE EVOLUTION OF HEALTH CARE

The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.

    -Hippocrates

    CHAPTER I

HOW DID WE GET HERE? EXPLORING NATURAL MEDICINE; WHY WE GET SICK & HOW TO PREVENT IT

In Volume I of THE ALTERNATIVE: Your Family’s Guide to Wellness: First-Aid & Common Conditions an entire chapter was devoted to each of the three topics listed above. If you would like to reference the complete text you can refer to that volume. A summary of the three chapters here assures a more complete understanding as you go forward. It also serves as a refresher to Volume I.

    HOW DID WE GET HERE?

To understand the scope of medical choices offered today (or lack thereof) it is important to know how we got here. Holistic medicine did not lose ground within the conventional medical community because of the advent of aspirin, penicillin and vaccines. Great advances in the world of natural medicine continues concurrently. We see this as Homeopathy continues to be the second largest system of medicine world-wide, while the advent of Osteopathic medicine and Naturopathic medicine, as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture are spreading across continents. Alternative medicine is a multi-billion-dollar industry.

As far as what we now refer to as ‘Conventional Medicine’, a new science evolved and with it an era of chemical compounds and medical testing procedures. The new science looks at the body in a different way, quantifying symptom pictures for individual organs and naming diseases.

The body began to be looked at less as an integrated hologram of life and more as individual unconnected parts.

We have gone from a long history of relying on natural medicines to government mandated health care that subscribes exclusively to chemical drugs and surgery. How did this happen? It is a curious evolution, but was it evolution or did something else occur to create the present lack of choice? It appears to be an exaggerated imbalance in America, since in many countries of the world holistic medicines are readily used alongside pharmaceuticals and surgical intervention.

THE FLEXNER REPORT: How the Face of Medicine in America Changed Forever.

It was 1908 when the Carnegie Foundation commissioned Abraham Flexner (1866-1959) to study and report on the efficacy of medical schools in America. Abraham Flexner was a secondary school teacher and principal for 19 years in Louisville, Kentucky. Flexner also did some graduate work at Harvard and the University of Berlin before joining the research staff at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He did not, however, have education or experience in medicine.

The Flexner Report ultimately provided very specific recommendations for state education, medical education, licensure, public health, scientific research, public hospitals and last but not least, the elimination of several competitors of allopathic medicine. In other words, he described what the proper basis for medicine should be according to his views.

Fast-forward a few years and it is easy to measure the repercussions Flexner’s recommendations brought forth. Within a few years of the report a majority of the M.D. and D.O. (Osteopathic) granting institutions closed.

The findings of the Flexner Report and the ongoing evaluation of medical schools by the AMA were soon accepted by state examining boards. The benefactors of medical education such as Rockefeller, Carnegie and the US government, followed AMA recommendations and pulled funding accordingly. (It is curious that Rockefeller, who lived to age 99, traveled with a Homeopathic physician and favored the use of Homeopathic remedies.)

The turning point in medical choices in America created by the Flexner report was repeated internationally in 1948 with the creation of the World Health Organization (WHO) by the United Nations. If you review their doctrines the WHO comes up exclusively on the side of expensive pharmaceutical-based drugs and Western medical practices.

If it hadn’t been for the Flexner Report, would natural medicine be commonly practiced in America as it is in so many parts of the world? We’ll never know because we were not given the opportunity to make a choice. At this time the only choice available is your insurance-mandated drug-based system, or dipping into your pocket and paying directly for natural health care, or what is now referred to as ‘alternative medicine.’

There was however, an even larger travesty heaped onto the American public robbing us of affordable, choice driven, health options.

In 1973, President Richard M. Nixon met with his friend and campaign financier, Edgar Kaiser, then president and chairman of Kaiser-Permanente. Subsequent to this meeting Nixon signed into law, the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 in which medical insurance agencies, hospitals, clinics and even doctors, could begin functioning as for profit business entities instead of the service organizations they were intended to be. You can guess which insurance company received the first federal subsidies to implement HMOA73. Kaiser-Permanente of course.

As a result, we are the only country in the world that has medicine for profit. What, you didn’t realize drugs are not advertised on TV in other countries? Unfortunately, so many years have passed since this horrible turn of events that American society is completely oblivious to this fact.

    EXPLORING NATURAL MEDICINE

The five most popular natural therapies thriving in America today are:

    Homeopathy

Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

    Chiropractic Medicine

    Naturopathic Medicine

    Osteopathic Medicine

What’s now called Alternative Medicine, which was once known as Traditional Medicine, comprises these therapies, which all have one factor in common: a respect for the innate nature of the body to heal itself through its own intelligence.

That intelligence is driven by its own energy. Health is only possible when there is complete harmony of the energies that drive the functions of the body. If those energies are ignored, distorted, corrupted or violated, then there can be no health.

Each form of holistic medicine is an approach to healing through an inborn intelligence and incorporates the natural forces that abide by the power of its vital force.

Each modality requires a high level of training and most require licensure. Education, training and licensing vary from state to state.

HOMEOPATHY, TCM, CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE, NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE & OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE AT A GLANCE

    HOMEOPATHY

    Treats the whole person

Energy Medicine derived from animal sources, plants & minerals

    In-depth case taking and observation

Addresses mental, emotional & physical issues

Treats the cause, does not suppress symptoms

    TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

    Treats the whole person

Acupuncture moves energy with needles placed in meridians

Pulse reading diagnoses the health of organs

Addresses mental, emotional & physical issues

Utilizes Chinese herbs to treat cause, does not suppress symptoms

    CHIROPRACTOR

Adjusts spine in relation to imbalances

Various techniques of gentle body manipulation

    Treats symptoms that address cause

    NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR

Treats the person as a whole

Utilizes Western medical testing as well as energetic

Can use meds, herbs, supplements & remedies

    Treats cause, not symptoms

    OSTEOPATHIC DOCTOR

    Two different styles

Uses traditional Western testing and pharmaceuticals OR:

    Treats the whole person

    Uses natural medicines

Hands-on therapy to stimulate energy balancing

The basis of Natural Medicine is to treat the whole person, including their emotional state. Each of the modalities is an approach…a very different approach from what we have come to know as the Western medical model.

WHY WE GET SICK & HOW TO PREVENT IT

All disease possesses the same characteristics: inflammation, hormonal imbalance, oxidative stress and mineral deficiency.

Everyone’s body works in the same way and this is our great hope, because if one person can heal, then everyone can heal. Disease is not selective; it is a state of being.

All disease has some aspect of the four components listed above, but it is OXIDATIVE STRESS that drives disease. Oxidative stress is when there is damage to your cells through the oxidative process. Oxidation is a normal process that occurs in nature, including in our bodies.

You’ve heard the term free radical, an atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in its outer shell (valence shell). When a free radical looks to attach itself to another atom by stealing an electron, it damages the cell it stole it from. The results are toxic. The valence shell has to fill itself up to be neutral or stable so it steals electrons from healthy cells. When an attacked electron loses its charge, it becomes a free radical itself, beginning a chain reaction.

You could say that aging is a form of ‘rusting’. We rust on the inside and we rust on the outside (wrinkled, dried, spotted skin). Free radicals are running through your system throughout your life looking for a mate. The more free radicals you have, the more damage and the faster aging can occur.

Where do the free radicals come from? They are everywhere.

    Toxic Chemicals

    Chemotherapy

    Cigarettes

    Rancid Oils

    Hydrogenated Oils

    Air Pollution

    Herbicides

    Radiation

    Drugs

    Poor Diet

Only through the process of detoxification, whether it is through food, remedies or herbal formulas, can free radicals be regularly flushed from the body in order to have vibrant health.

Cleansing the body has a specific order, since there is a natural order to healing. The following will accomplish gentle detoxification of the major organs.

    Colon

    Kidney

    Skin

    Lungs

    Liver

    Lymph

Volume I details a number of options for the detoxification of each organ system. Refer to that volume for more detailed information. In this second volume, I will instead build on your choices by listing the Homeopathic remedies specific to organ drainage. Lower potencies, such as 6X or 6C, are recommended for organ cleansing.

Seeking the advice of a qualified Homeopath to guide you through the process is recommended. The correct remedy is dependent on your specific symptoms. The following are a few suggestions:

    COLON

    Impacted- PLUMBUM

    Cramping- COLOCYNTHIS

    Diarrhea- ARSENICUM ALBUM

    Bloating- CARBO VEGETABILIS

    KIDNEY

    BERBERIS VULGARIS

    CANTHARIS

    SOLIDAGO

    SKIN

    BERBERIS AQUIFOLIUM

    LEVICO AQUA

    SULPHUR

    LUNGS

    SAMBUCUS NIGRA

    KALI CARBONICUM

    ANTIMONIUM TARTARICUM

    LIVER

    CARDUUS MARIANUS

    CHELIDONIUM

    NUX VOMICA

    LYCOPODIUM

    HYDRASTIS

    LYMPH

    PHOSPHORUS

    WHOLE BODY CLEANSE

A whole body cleanse can be accomplished with food. An easy method is a juice cleanse. The following are the most efficient detoxification foods. (Buy organic when possible.)

    Carrot

    Apple

    Beet

    Lemon

Juicing should be done under the guidance of a qualified health practitioner. This is not fasting, it is cleansing. Fasting can be dangerous.

    HYDRATION

Hydration is an important issue for your health and well-being, whether you are cleansing or not. In fact, hydration is the key to successful detoxification and healing. It is essential for toxins to be moving out of the cells regularly, especially in our industrialized existence.

    CHAPTER II

    HOMEOPATHY

Since most of the protocols in this book are based on Homeopathic practices, I have repeated the description presented in Volume I regarding Homeopathy.

GERMAN WISDOM BRINGS FORTH ENERGETIC MEDICINE

When I was first introduced to Homeopathy I thought I’d stepped into a land of make-believe. I was visiting friends in Colorado during a ski trip with my husband and two sons. My friend Colleen was at the beginning stages of a cold. I watched her open a small case with vials that contained little white pellets. She referenced a booklet, chose one of the remedies and placed a few pellets under her tongue. Within a couple of hours, she was free of symptoms and her cold never materialized.

I was shocked and wanted to know everything about the little miracle she had just performed. She gave me a short explanation of Homeopathy and I never looked back. As soon as I went home to Massachusetts I started to search for any means available to learn about this amazing system of medicine that I later discovered was over two hundred years old.

I couldn’t imagine why I’d never heard of Homeopathy and why no one I knew hadn’t either. As I searched further I continued to be amazed that in 1987 it was the best-kept secret in America. There was no Internet to consult back then, but fortunately for me, in the 1980’s Homeopathy was experiencing a resurgence in North America. Education in the field of Homeopathy has continued to grow tremendously over the last three decades.

Homeopathy, from the Greek homoeo (meaning similar) and pathos (meaning suffering) is a system of medicine based on treating symptoms and conditions with substances from nature that exhibit the same symptom picture. In other words, if you have an itchy rash, a remedy for cure is a plant that creates an itchy rash on exposure. It is the introduction of an artificial disease that neutralizes the natural disease. The same principle is used with some conventional medicine, the most notable examples being the use of vaccines, antibiotics and antidotes. Homeopathy, however, utilizes much smaller doses of the original substance kept pure in manufacture and not mixed with other chemical components. As a result, there are no side effects.

Homeopathy also treats the whole person based on their specific symptoms, rather than a diagnosed (or misdiagnosed) disease.

The manner in which a remedy is chosen is unique to Homeopathy. There are very spe cific dictates that sets Homeopathy apart from other systems of medicine:

The manufacturing process is unique, including numerous dilutions (creating the different potencies or strengths) and succussing (shaking) of the remedy to expand the energy of the base material.

A very small amount of the original material remains in the end product.

A case-taking method that embraces specific observation of the patient to determine which remedy best suits the individual mentally, emotionally and physically.

The dispensing of one remedy at a time and observing the action of the remedy before changing potency or moving on to a different remedy.

Let’s use COVID-19 as an example. This viral pandemic was diagnosed as an Acute Respiratory Disease. As a result, many patients were treated in ICU’s with ventilators. When the autopsies performed by the Italians were published it was revealed that patients had instead died as a result of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation…in other words, Thrombosis. Ventilators had in fact suffocated many patients, since doctors were treating the wrong ‘dis-ease.’

Homeopathy has pulled us out of many epidemics in the last two centuries. COVID-19 would have been no exception if the medical community were not completely closed minded about the use of anything beyond chemical pharmaceutical drugs.

When I started to receive calls from my long-time clients I did not have to ponder about the ‘disease’ they had been confirmed to have as COVID-19. Instead I asked them their specific symptoms. One by one I suggested remedies that covered the totality of symptoms they recited. They improved immediately, without exception. For some their symptoms shifted days later and at that time the remedy was changed to suit the new collection of symptoms.

I did not have to be concerned about the diagnosis by the medical community and then their later correction. Instead I followed the laws of ‘like cures like’, just as Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy, had done over 230 years previously.

The result was that none of those I worked with ended up in an ICU, or even progressed past the initial symptoms. This is the difference between Homeopathy and all other forms of medicine. Homeopathy treats the person, not their perceived disease.

The theory of Homeopathy was developed by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) into a systematic medical science. Dr. Hahnemann was a German physician who stumbled upon the concept of substances from nature matching symptoms of illness when he was working to translate the writings of Dr. William Cullen in 1789.

Dr. Cullen, one of the leading physicians of the era, had written about the use of Peruvian bark (Cinchona) in treating Malaria. He reasoned that its efficacy was due to its bitter and astringent properties.

Hahnemann disputed Cullen’s deduction, since there were many other plants that were bitter and astringent that did not affect the symptoms of malaria.

Hahnemann decided to take the Peruvian bark himself, repeatedly, until he came down with fever, chills and other symptoms that mimicked malaria. Hahnemann concluded that the reason Peruvian bark cured malaria was not because it was a bitter astringent, but because it caused similar symptoms (like cures like) of the disease itself. This experiment proved to be the beginning of the development of Homeopathy as a science and system of medicine.

Hahnemann tested remedies (called provings) by giving doses of various substances to both himself and healthy individuals in small quantities for days or weeks until they would manifest the set of symptoms peculiar, or specific, to that substance.

Hahnemann chanced upon one of the more puzzling aspects of Homeopathy when he experienced that the more dilute a substance was, the more effective it became in treating illness. At that time in our history, the science of water molecules inherently possessing memory had not yet been proven, along with little to no understanding of the bodies’ energetic vital force.

Hahnemann found over and over that the healthy subjects’ proving symptoms were a milder version of the well-known poisonous symptoms of diseases, leading to the real ization that poisons, when suitably prepared and administered in sufficiently small doses, possess powerful medicinal properties.

The proving process, besides the concept of tiny doses, is the major difference between this system of medicine and the methods of conventional pharmaceutical medicine. The substances are not given to animals in the laboratory to produce pathological changes, nor are they first given to sick individuals to see how they react. The method of seeing the efficacy of a homeopathic medicine does not go from test tube, to laboratory animals, to the sick, but instead is observed by meticulously recording the changes that occur to healthy individuals when they are given the medicine. Those changes—mental, emotional and physical—mimic the symptoms of the illness the medicine will affect.

Whenever there is controversy in regards to Homeopathy it is in relation to the fraction of original substance left in the end product. Pharmaceutical medicines are the opposite and contain large doses of chemical substances. As a result, the benefits of feeding the body information to heal itself goes unrecognized and ignored by Western science.

The television program 60 Minutes aired a story in March of 2015 about doctors at the Duke University Medical Center working on a cure for brain cancer using the polio virus. They were having
