Barry Grant Marsh

Barry Grant Marsh was a third-generation Jehovah’s Witness. He and his wife, Carol, were both members of the denomination. They have been married forty-nine years. The couple has three grown children, seven grandchildren, and one great grandson. In Witness Tampering, Barry tells the story of how he and his family came to Christ out of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He calls it “a drive-by snatching of the Holy Spirit.” The book is designed to help others who are struggling to leave behind the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society dogma and see Jesus Christ in a new light as their Lord and Savior. His amazing story reveals some of the very powerful training methods employed by Jehovah’s Witnesses to manipulate and control their followers. Barry includes steps you can take as a Christian that will protect you and your family from falling victim to false doctrines. There are also tips on what you can do to reach out to friends and family who have become Witnesses and even how you can witness to Jehovah’s Witnesses who come to your door. Mr. Marsh is involved in volunteering at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Stuart as a lay lector, intercessor, greeter, and usher. A second-generation broadcaster, Barry now produces and creates audio and video presentations for the church and other nonprofit organizations, including the Salvation Army of the Treasure Coast. He is currently the owner of BGM Creative Advertising and Marketing firm in Stuart, Florida.

    FOREWORD

O ne of the greatest gifts that anyone can give is their story. Barry Grant Marsh has done that for us. He has shared honestly the challenges of growing up in a three-generation Jehovah’s Witness family, and what a difference coming to know the truth can make. And Barry, like each of us, had to live that truth out in the real world. Having traveled with some of the greats in the recording and country music industry, he experienced firsthand the downside of what it means to lose spiritual direction and focus, and the need to reach out to a God who has the power to heal. His story is a story of struggle, redemption, and resurrection. I am glad Barry has shared it with us.

    PREFACE

I had been wrong about Him. Dead wrong. Everything I knew about Him or thought I knew was hearsay or incorrect. But all of that was about to change.

When you grow up learning lies about someone, you have a very difficult time facing the truth. What was even more unusual was that the one who convinced me to change my testimony was someone I never even realized existed. Yet I knew I could trust this person. He was leading me into all truth about the one I had been wrong about for thirty years.

It seemed the more I learned the truth about Him, the easier it became to accept the other issues in my life that I had been dealing with and finding difficult to overcome due to my uncorroborated beliefs. The scary thing was that my earlier testimony had been based on some truth but not the whole truth. I wouldn’t be able to put my hand on the Holy Bible and swear the testimony I was about to give was based entirely on the truth.

This Person came into my life and brought new information—facts that were undeniable—and for the life of me, I could not understand why I had not seen the evidence prior to this. I had to come to grips with the fact that my life before this epiphany had been sequestered. I had been ordered not to read anything but authorized material and certainly saw no news on the case. That’s what made this Witness tampering so unusual.

The Witness tampering came from a very mysterious source. I never saw the Person who was responsible for changing my testimony. Not that He was like Deep Throat, the super-secret character from the Watergate scandal out on a mission to catch bungling burglars. His still small voice spoke to me, and His argument was convincing. He would change my life as an expert Witness forever.

There was no doubt that I had been an expert Witness. In fact, I came from a long line of expert Witnesses. I was training my children to become expert Witnesses just like me and my father and his father. The Witness tampering was about to change all of that generational history, however. The longer I allowed the tampering to continue, the more convinced I was to change my testimony. Convinced and convicted. I felt guilty about my previous testimony. If only I had known these truths earlier in my life, I would not have caused others to jeopardize their thinking. One thing was certain: my testimony and the testimony of the next generation of expert Witnesses in my family was going to change.

As I looked back on my coaching to become an expert Witness, it was all so methodical. The material I was taught had been crafted in such a way that any reasoning person would certainly be persuaded to believe that what I said was gospel—especially if they were not well versed in the subject matter. It sounded so natural and compelling. The testimony had a ring of truth, but it was taken out of context and distorted.

My early upbringing had made me proficient at following an outline. It was like being an actor in a play. The outline was my script. All I had to do was learn my lines, and I’d have it knocked. Thanks to the Witness tampering from this unseen Person who had taken control and showed me the absolute facts, however, the curtain was finally coming down on all the acting. I was now coming to grips with the realty that everything I had been taught and taught others to testify was horribly wrong. The guilt was exceedingly difficult to bear.

But then, as a third-generation Jehovah’s Witness, I was used to feeling guilty. Guilt about whether I measured up to God’s standards was a constant companion. I was always guilt-ridden about whether my works were good enough to be counted worthy of everlasting life. Was I doing enough expert witnessing to earn my salvation?

The unseen Person who made all the difference for me was God in the form of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the one promised by Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He was the one who tampered with my witness. The Holy Spirit assured me that all the guilt I felt would be erased by grace as He set forth the truth plainly in His Word, revealing the light of the Gospel of the Glory of Christ. This was the Witness tampering you will read about in this book. It’s the story of how the Holy Spirit lifted a veil, giving me my freedom from Jehovah’s Witnesses and transforming my life daily to truly witness for Christ.

    CHAPTER 1

    Earliest Recollection

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten son so all those that believe in him might not perish but have eternal life.

    —John 3:16 (NIV)

T he story you are about to read is true. None of the names have been changed to protect the innocent. As Christians, we know that none of us are innocent. All of us, from Adam and Eve, are born into sin.

My name is Barry Grant Marsh. I was born a third-generation Jehovah’s Witness, and this is my recollection of how I was led out of darkness and into a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. My journey to Jesus took over thirty years and was filled with dedication to an organization that brought difficulty,
