Summary

Based on the true but little-known story of Margaret Morgan, a free woman of color in 1830's Pennsylvania. When her former owner in Maryland contested Margaret's manumission, Pennsylvania courts ruled in Margaret's favor. Then her former owner sent Prigg, a bounty hunter, who kidnapped Margaret and her children, and returned them to Maryland. Thus setting off the earliest court battle over state's rights, Prigg v Pennsylvania. Margaret and her children were sold; and have disappeared into the shadows of history. Now journalist Jessica McCann brings Margaret to live and imagines her courage and intelligence in the face of horrific circumstances. Winner, Freedom in Fiction Prize.
