Preface
SIDE BY SIDE BILINGUAL BOOKS introduce readers to engaging stories in a bilingual format, in which both versions of the text appear side by side on facing pages.
Stories from Spain/Historias de España explores the rich cultural and historical heritage of Spain. The eighteen legends are in chronological order and cover a period of more than a thousand years. We start with a legend that precedes the conquest by the Moors in the eighth century, and we conclude with a story that takes place at the end of the eighteenth century. The legends occur throughout Spain’s geography: from the Basque Country in the north to Andalusia in the south, and from the austere land of Castile to the lush vegetation of Valencia along the Mediterranean coast.
The legends are presented in accessible language in both English and Spanish so readers may gain valuable reading skills in their new language while at the same time enjoying the support of their native language. Comprehension may be checked in either language by comparing the two versions of the story, or by referring to the bilingual vocabulary list at the end of the book.
It is our hope that readers will enjoy these captivating tales as they explore Spain’s rich legacy.

Lemor of Ireland
In northern Spain, there are three Basque provinces: Guipúzcoa, Biscay, and Álava. Their inhabitants are believed to be descendants of ancient peoples who once lived in France and Spain. The Basque¹ language is difficult to learn because it is unlike any other language. The Basques are industrious, independent, humble, and brave. One of their favorite pastimes is playing jai alai.² In addition, sailors from these provinces have the reputation of being the best in all of Spain.
Lémor of Ireland
Many years ago, there was a king in Ireland named Morna. All the people loved the king and his two sons, Lemor and Armin, who were good and noble young men.
One morning, the king and the princes, accompanied by many servants, set out to hunt wild boars that abounded in the nearby forest. The king and some of his servants entered the forest from one side; the princes and other servants entered by the other side. Soon, Lemor, the older son, shouted, There goes a wild boar, near those tall oaks!
Lemor’s arrow immediately went flying in that direction. He, Armin, and the servants went in search of the animal. But the arrow had not struck a wild boar. As they drew near the tall oaks, they heard a cry of agony and they saw the king lying on the ground. The arrow had struck King Morna’s chest. Moments later, he died. This tragedy caused great sorrow among the people. Lemor was inconsolable.
When everyone had returned to the castle, the elderly chiefs held a meeting. After long hours of discussion, they called for Lemor, the heir to the throne, and told him, Lemor, although you are not to blame, it was your arrow that killed your beloved father. For that reason, you cannot be our king. Armin, your younger brother, will take your place. Tomorrow you will leave Ireland in a small boat with two of your servants. May a good wind accompany you! And may heaven guide you!
The following morning, very early, the prince and his servants set sail. Sad and weary, they spent many days at sea.
Finally, Lemor saw land. Upon arriving, he and his servants were deeply impressed. They saw that the land was as green and beautiful as Ireland.
Fortunately, they had arrived in the Basque country, home of kind and generous people. On seeing the strangers on the beach, men and women left their work and ran to offer them help. After learning who they were, Lekobide, the leader, offered them a second country. Each one was taken to a hospitable family, where he could live as a member of that family. Because Lemor was a prince, he was invited to be the guest of the leader and his family.
Everyone was happy with his new family, especially Lemor. He had fallen in love with the beautiful daughter of the leader and, with his permission, he wanted to marry her.
The day of the wedding, Lekobide fell seriously ill. To make matters worse, that same day the sentinels notified them that the Asturians,² their enemies from the west, were advancing rapidly, intent on waging war.
What are we going to do without Lekobide?
everyone shouted. The Basque soldiers were brave, but they needed a good leader.
From his bed, Lekobide told them, Many years have passed since the last wars and now I am old and sick. I cannot continue as your leader. But I have a solution. Lemor, who is now my son-in-law, has noble blood in his veins. He will be your leader.
At first Lemor did not want to accept, but everyone insisted.
Yes, you are now our leader,
said the people.
And Lemor, taking leave of his new wife, took his place at the head of the soldiers, and all of them started up the mountain
