Description

From this day forward you are one of us. One of the Infernal Blade.

When Mara hits her limit, her foster father meets her blade and so starts her induction into a life of death and darkness. The initiation into the Infernal Blade is filled with pain and fear but what comes out on the other side is one of the most powerful creatures to walk the Earth.

Years before meeting her men, Mara, living as a homeless teen meets the Elders just as her life is thrown into upheaval. With her best friend Rora by her side, Mara tries to work out what her life has become and works to come to grips with the fact that nothing will ever be the same.

Infernally Marked, previously part of the Assassin Society Anthology, is the prequel to Infernally Mine, a medium burn #whychoose book that sets the stage for this epic series of death, loyalty, and love. This prequel is from Mara's point of view as a teen so there are no explicit scenes but there is foul language. Intended for mature audiences only.

Chapter 1

Mara

His blood drips from my knife as I stare at his corpse.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

How can a body hold so much blood? I take the toe of my boot and kick his stomach lightly. He’s dead. It’s clear he’s dead, but I still can’t believe it. I look at the blade in my hand covered in the blood of my foster father. My recently deceased foster father. The large gash in his throat is all the proof that I should need, the weapon I used to end his life still in my hand.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

The sound of sirens in the background pulls me from my stupor. They aren’t for me yet. Nobody knows what I’ve done, except probably them. I bend over and drag the blade of my knife across his pants to remove the rest of the blood.

Mara? A voice squeaks from the other room. I rush over to the hamper and grab a towel, wrapping the knife up tightly before shoving it in the back of my pants to hide it from my little sister. She lays in the corner of her room, her blankie held tightly in front of her face.

Gracie, baby, get into bed. My voice comes out soothingly as I grab my small sister and carry her to her bed. It will be six hours before our foster mother will be home and discover that ’daddy dearest’ is dead.

Where is he? He’s just going to come back when you leave. I know he won’t stop. Gracie says between sobs as she presses her face into my chest. I breathe in deeply, holding her scent in my lungs. This will be the last time I get to hold my baby foster sister. After what I’ve done, I won’t be able to come back, ever.

He’s never going to touch you again, Gracie, I promise. It’s over. I whisper, holding her close to my chest as I rock her back and forth. I’m gonna have to go away for a while, but it’ll be better now. My breath catches as I press my lips to the top of her head. I love you, Gracie.

I love you too, Mara. Her sleepy voice replies. My body continues to rock as I hum quietly, waiting for her to drift asleep. In less than an hour, her body has become slack in my arms, and I know that she has gone to sleep, a dreamless sleep, I hope.

Soundlessly, I slide my body out of bed and whisper before slipping out the window, back into the darkness.

Goodbye, Gracie.

The tent that I have been calling my home for over a month now shakes and shivers in the wind. Unfortunately, the bridge overhead does little to protect it from the wind.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

It’s just rain. I repeat the thought in my head over and
