    Corallai - Michelle Path

    Chapter One

    Andi Meets Aquanna

Andi skipped along the edge of the water carrying her bucket and spade, the waves lapping at her feet. She slowed down and searched the sand for pretty shells to collect.

It had been a pleasant, sunny afternoon at the beach, but quite suddenly the wind had picked up, sending clouds racing across the sky. A loud boom of thunder stopped Andi in her tracks. She looked up at the sky, expecting to see lightning. Instead, she saw the face of a strange, beautiful creature gazing down at her from amidst the clouds.

Andi was spellbound as she watched the creature inhale deeply and then suddenly exhale, stirring the ocean’s surface.

What happened next took Andi quite by surprise. The creature’s breath caused a huge wave to form, growing larger and larger as it gathered momentum and made its way towards the shore.

Andi couldn’t take her eyes off this strange phenomenon. She knew that she should run away, yet she stood perfectly still as the wave towered over her head, the roaring of the water drowning out all other sound.

When the wave cast a huge shadow over Andi, she finally came to her senses. She turned and tried to run — but it was too late! The wave crashed down, engulfing Andi in its watery embrace. It sucked her under, pulling her further and further toward the ocean floor.

Andi thrashed as she tried to fight against the pull of the water. Suddenly, a voice told her to stop struggling and she did so without questioning this logic. Strangely, she found she could breathe just fine, so she relaxed and looked around her.

It seemed she was in an airy underwater tunnel, surrounded by the ocean and its inhabitants. Andi could see that the tunnel led to an underwater town surrounded by a huge bubble, so she headed towards it. She exited the tunnel, and when she turned around it had disappeared.

A scaly hand appeared and Andi grabbed it, allowing herself to be pulled to her feet. She looked up to see who the owner of the hand was. To her surprise, it belonged to the female creature she had seen in the sky — the one that had caused the wave to engulf her and send her to this strange place.

‘Are you a mermaid?’ she asked.

The creature shook her head slowly.

Andi studied her. The creature wore a loose, flowing gown that seemed to be made of a material similar to the gossamer wings of a butterfly. Its transparency did little to hide her body, which was covered in scales. These scales gradually turned from pale flesh tones on her upper body to pinks around her midriff and increasingly deeper shades of purple on her lower limbs. She had long, wavy purple hair with shells and tufts of seagrass woven into it. Her arms, legs and feet were like a human’s but had small fins attached.

If the creature was self-conscious in the face of Andi’s intense scrutiny, she did not show it; instead, she smiled kindly. This only enhanced her incredible beauty. ‘I guess you must be wondering where you are and who I am?’ she said softly.

Andi nodded, unable to find her voice.

‘I am Aquanna. My species are known as squillfolk, and this is our kingdom, Corallai. It is very old — ancient, in fact — and for years we have lived in harmony with the ocean. You could say we are the caretakers of the sea. The oceans once thrived and the reefs were
