Lifestyle Dog Training - Butch Cappel
Introduction
I cannot remember a twenty-four-hour period in my life when I could not reach out my arm and touch a dog. Dogs have been my constant companions for my entire life, through the best of times and the not-so-best of times. For the last several decades, they have also been my livelihood. I have trained dogs on three different continents. Some I’ve trained for competitions or shows and others to save lives. Dogs have opened doors for me to some amazing opportunities.
Over the years, I’ve studied every training technique I’ve come across. What I’ve found is that, for all the countless how-to books, videos, and professional trainers out there, most dog training seems to fall into two basic schools of thought. At one end, there are the all-positive
types. At the opposite end, there are the yank and crank
or shock 'em types. I’ve come to the conclusion that humans know a lot about techniques, gadgets, rules and judging, but they just haven’t learned a lot about dogs.
I want to be clear. This book is not a how to train your dog
book. This is a how your dog thinks
book. When you understand a dog's mind, you understand how he learns. That makes it possible for you to communicate effectively with him, and training becomes easy.
In this country, there are so many false beliefs and misunderstandings about dogs. My goal is to help set some things straight. One thing I have learned from my years of experience is dogs want to learn. We just have to give them the chance. If you take the time to learn how your dog thinks, the two of you can build a strong bond and a very enjoyable relationship.
When I was younger, I was very fond of the really big dogs, like Great Danes, but then I fell in love with a miniature poodle. I guess I just like dogs, whatever the breed or size. We’ve all heard the expression, Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life.
Well, that would be true for me. Working and living with these creatures I’ve always enjoyed so much has never been labor—just love.
Now it’s time for me to do more than say a thank you to all the dogs who’ve graced my life. It’s time for me to pay back something on the debt I owe them. It’s my hope that teaching people how a dog thinks and learns will lead to a better way of training and improve the quality of life for dogs everywhere. They deserve that.
If you own a dog or you are thinking of getting one, this book will teach you to better understand him and communicate with him. Once you’ve learned that, you’ll have the foundation for the best friendship, truly, that you’ve ever known. That’s a win for both of you. That is also the purpose of this book.
