    About the Author

    Introduction:

Open Your Heart to the Wisdom Inside You

    Dear Reader,

I created this book of prayers for both you and me. The ups and downs we have seen throughout the world in recent times caused many of us to look at life with fresh perspectives. Upon rising every morning, how we spiritually greet each day could very well determine how our future unfolds. In turn, folks everywhere have decided to seek out new paths in hopes of uncovering their true purposes in life. Starting out each day with a special blessing or prayer is critical to such a journey.

Regardless of our age, livelihood, or family situation, a new beginning might mean a short detour along our current path, or it could take you in a completely new direction. Some people make changes because they are unhappy with something small in their life; others do so because they believe that they need a complete overhaul. Sometimes advice is coming from all sorts of people in every direction, but the important thing is to find the path that’s best for us—the path that makes us the happiest. Uncovering the necessary changes is not easy, as it’s critical for us to look inside ourselves to find the true intentions of our souls.

Take a moment to think about what you want in your life and why you want to make this particular change. Allow your heart to open to the wisdom that already lives inside you. How are you going to make it happen? Do you have the desire and the courage to see it the whole way through? Sometimes these changes are scary. Some of us might need to make one or more sacrifices—mentally, physically, or even financially. It might require stepping out of your comfort zone in order to find the path to your true potential.

Perhaps the most important tools in facing these journeys are inspiration and motivation. Some folks may be able to muster the courage to face these challenges alone, but most of us find we need the support of other people. If you dig deep enough, there is unlimited wisdom available courtesy of the world’s most famous leaders, poets, writers, and scientists. More times than not, a few powerful words are all the motivation you might need. That was the main vision behind the creation of this book—providing you with a daily message in hopes of keeping you moving in the right direction.

It’s time to reclaim your life and rediscover the true joy of your existence.

Making a change or starting over isn’t the worst thing you can do.

    Giving up is.

    Change

Change will not come if we wait for some other person,

or if we wait for some other time.

We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

We are the change that we seek.

    —Barack Obama

    Tiny Prayer

May you make plans to regularly step away for several moments a day,

knowing that the news is out there,

that the fight is out there,

that the sustaining of a movement is bigger than you,

that it requires you to take care of your body and soul,

which means breathing into the horrors you already know,

taking a break from ingesting more,

and trusting your communities to continually balance the work,

staggering participation so that the collective spirit moves,

even during the moments when you are at necessary rest.

    Amen.

    —Micah Bucey (2020)

    Prayer for Peace

May I become at all times, both now and forever

A protector for those without protection

A guide for those who have lost their way

A ship for those with oceans to cross

A bridge for those with rivers to cross

A sanctuary for those in danger

A lamp for those without light

A place of refuge for those who lack shelter

And a servant to all in need.

    —Buddhist Prayer of Peace

    9

God Grant Me Grace to Be My Best Self

Give us the strength it takes

to listen rather than to judge,

to trust rather than to fear,

    to try again and again

to make peace even when peace eludes us.

We ask, O God, for the grace

    to be our best selves.

    We ask for the vision

to be builders of the human community

    rather than its destroyers.

We ask for the humility as a people

to understand the fears and hopes of other peoples.

We ask for the love it takes

to bequeath to the children of the world to come

more than the failures of our own making.

We ask for the heart it takes

to care for all the peoples.

For You, O God, have been merciful to us.

For You, O God, have been patient with us.

For You, O God, have been gracious to us.

And so may we be merciful

    and patient

    and gracious

    and trusting

with these others whom you also love.

    This we ask through Jesus,

the one without vengeance in his heart.

This we ask forever and ever.

    Amen.

—Benedictine Sisters’ Prayer for World Peace

Every Tomorrow Is a Vision of Hope

    Look to this day,

For yesterday is but a dream,

And tomorrow is only a vision,

    But today, well lived,

Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness,

And every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well, therefore, to this day.

    —Kalidasa, from ancient Sanskrit

    9

    The Only Thing That Matters

I do not think that the measure of a civilization

is how tall its buildings of concrete are,

but rather how well its people have learned to relate

to their environment and fellow man.

    —Sun Bear, Chippewa Medicine Man

    9

    Bloom

    I want to tell you

    about the sunflower I found

    on the sidewalk yesterday.

It is wilting and curled and gorgeous

    and knows it.

I want to age like that,

    never forgetting my own beauty,

never forgetting how to say bloom.

    —Anna Voelker

    Today I Purpose to Love

    My life will shine

    As the morning sings

    I walk in liberty

    Bound in true dreams

    Manifested promises

    Chase my forward motion

    A covered path before me

    The fruits of my hoping

    The fruits of my living

    Today I purpose to love

    My love will speak

    With the sound of grace

    Merciful within mercy

    The works of my faith

    Smiles of overflowing

    Inspire my giving

    Abundance of joy as rain

    The fruits of my living

    —Michael John Faciane

    Mother Teresa’s Prayer for Purpose

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow men

throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger.

Give them through our hands this day their daily bread,

and by our understanding love, give peace and joy.

    —Mother Teresa

Live Each Day As If It Is Your Last

    As my life today

has been determined by the way I lived my yesterday,

So my tomorrow is being determined by the way

    I live my today.

    —Ralph Waldo Trine

Joy and Good Will and Serenity

As you cannot have a sweet and wholesome abode
