    In this book, we will explore the incredible potential of artificial intelligence, with a focus on two of the most powerful AI chatbot systems, ChatGPT and ChatSonic. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly present in our everyday lives, from the virtual assistants on our phones to the recommendation algorithms on streaming platforms. However, for many people, the inner workings of AI remain a mystery, and the potential applications of this technology can seem out of reach.

    This book aims to change that. Through clear explanations and practical examples, we will demystify the world of AI and empower you to understand how you can use this technology in your everyday personal and business life. We will explore the capabilities and limitations of chatbots like ChatGPT and ChatSonic, and discuss how these tools can be used to improve efficiency, communication, and more and to simplify everyday tasks.

    Chapter 1

    Introduction to artificial intelligence

    The machines are coming! The machines are coming! Oops! It’s not that foreboding. Artificial intelligence (AI) has come a long way since its early beginnings in the 1950s, and today it is an integral part of every aspect of our lives. Whether there are virtual assistants on our smart phones or recommendation algorithms on audio-visual streaming platforms, AI has the power to transform industries, improve efficiency, and enhance our daily lives.

    A simple definition of AI is the ability of computers and machines to perform tasks that normally require human-like intelligence. It goes even further in that the computer systems appear to think as people do, understand and interpret natural language, recognize images and patterns, make decisions, and learn from experience as humans do. Chances are, you've been interacting with AI for years without realizing it, and that’s why it’s called AI: it impersonates human brilliance.

    Even if you are a boomer, you are familiar with virtual assistants like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, which are able to understand and respond to voice commands. Tesla’s self-driving cars use AI to navigate roadways and traffic; and the facial recognition systems found at the entry points of several countries and by CCTV apps use AI to identify people in photos or videos. Please let me know if the TV show Person of Interest comes to mind upon reading or hearing about AI.

    Having studied computer science at a young age and as a technology enthusiast and avid reader of science fiction, I was first introduced to the world of AI through the book The Fifth Generation: Artificial Intelligence and Japan's Computer Challenge to the World by Edward A. Feigenbaum, who introduced expert systems. Published in 1983, this book explored the history and development of AI in Japan and the impact that this technology had on the country's economy and society. It also discussed the global implications of Japan's advancements in AI and the potential challenges and opportunities that this technology presented for the rest of the world. There are different types of AI: hard-wired, which is designed to automate a specific task and does not learn from interacting with their environment, and adaptive AI, which is designed to help humans but is able to perform a wide range of tasks.

    Since reading The Fifth Generation, I have been fascinated by the potential of AI and have been eager to learn more about this rapidly evolving technology. I aim to share my knowledge and insights with others who are interested in AI and its practical applications. It was the introduction of chatbots like ChatGPT and ChatSonic that reignited my interest in AI. Through clear explanations and practical examples, the reader and I will explore the capabilities and limitations of these useful AI tools, introduce ways that the average person can use these tools to improve efficiency, communication, and more, and outline some of the concerns that we all share. Quite honestly, it’s like having a personal secretary, technical assistant, and coach all wrapped up into a tiny piece of software easily accessible on tablets, smartphones, and whatever device has access to the internet.
