Built in 1939, the SS Donald McKay was acquired by the Navy and commissioned in April 1941. Renamed the Polaris, it made five round trips to Reykjavik, Iceland, and then she moved to the Caribbean Sea. In 1944, Polaris made three trips to Algeria. As WWII ended, Polaris moved to the Pacific islands.Polaris was decommissioned 18 January 1946, and reacquired by the Navy on 6 October 1948. The ship was re-commissioned in 1949 to serve in the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954. This record-setting provision stores ship transferred 16.10 tons per hour while on underway replenishment. She was decommissioned 12 January 1957.
