Reader reviews for All the Way to America : The Story of a Big Italian Famil...

A wonderful colorful illustrated book by Dan Yaccarino. He managed to create nice pictures and faces that show different expressions. I tried first to read the story, just by watching on the pictures, but that resulted difficult, as there are so many different characters, although they have similar looks. The story is about immigration and a shovel that has been given from one generation to another. The great-grandfather Michele said at the beginning: "Work hard, but remember to enjoy life. And never forget your family." This is what all following generations did. The story could be adapted to many families in the US, because there was and still is lots of immigration. In school, a teacher could use that book as an introduction to "The history of my family". Students could find out something about their own family through interviews, photographs, etc. and could maybe present their results in class.

This is a heart-filled story about four generations of a family that began in Italy and came to America. The great-gradfather of the story makes his way to America in search of a new life and with the little shovel his father gave him. This shovel becomes the symbol of family and survival and is passed down through the generations until it is given to Dan, the great-grandson. Dan does a beautiful job with this story, making it one that is very relatable and joyful. So many families have immigrated to America and this is a tribute to all of them!

This is a story that could be told by almost any person living in the United States; the story of a family's immigration to the U.S. I found it to be a well written, and heartfelt story about Yaccarino's Italian ancestors, written in a way that would be appealing to young readers. Including the shovel as almost another character was a nice touch. It shows how items can be passed down in a family, becoming an heirloom. The illustrations are bold and colorful. I like how the color schemes vary slightly depending on the era.

This is the story of the family of author and illustrator Dan Yaccarino. He recounts his great grandfathers immigration from Italy, all the way through his family today. He passes on the tales of his relatives, just as they passed on the little shovel his great grandfather brought from Italy. This story could be used to discuss many things, including point of view, making connections, etc. The artwork might also be a point of discussion.

Dan Yaccarino tells the story of his family’s move from Italy to the United States. Everywhere the family goes, they carry their shovel along, and the shovel always serves a useful purpose.“So when I grew up, I moved back to the city where my great-grandfather Michele had lived.‘Work hard,’ my father told me as he handed me the little shovel. ‘But remember to enjoy life.’‘And don’t forget to call your family,’ said my mother.”

The third book is called “All the way to America – the story of a big Italian family and a little shovel” by Dan Yccarino (also the illustrator). I love this story; ended the book crying like a baby, thinking about my life as an immigrant in this country. What a touching and beautifull book. Both, the content and the illustrations are connected to make this story real and to bring this book to life. I am visualize myself using this book with my future students who will probably be from families of immigrants from different countries. Another great addition to my personal library.

In All The Way To America, author-illustrator Dan Yaccarino tell the story of his great-grandfather's journey from Italy to America. As he left Italy, his parents encouraged him to "Work hard, but remember to enjoy life. And never forget your family." This is the theme that has been passed along four generations of his family to this day. It's a book about values and traditions that can apply to everyone. It also gives interesting points into the life of immigrants at the turn of the last century.
