Thomas, a small statued 13 year old, is chosen by Sir Gerald to be his squire. The older boys make fun of him, but he takes his duty to king and country seriously. He makes of friend of Jon the stable boy. One day when they go racing to see the King's horse, they run into Princess Eleanor. She tells them they are conspirators and champions with her in sneaking past Marshal Wattley to feed apples to Heartwind. Sir Gerald gives Thomas a small sword that was given to him and its handle made from the tooth of a big animal. When all the knights go away to battle and the king's daughter is taken by dragon queen Bridgoltha, Thomas happens upon the sad king. Thomas says he will go and rescue Eleanor, so the King makes him a knight. There are no horses for him to take, so he takes Bartholomew the donkey. He father gives him a leather jerkin he has crafted, and little sister gives him her toy horse. Thomas is off. Many feed and shelter him on his journey. Once he gets to the lake of the monster, he battles with it. When he sticks his sword in the monster's mouth, it gets back it's tooth, aka...his sword hilt, and then it dies. The king had gone on before him and has gotten wounded. Thomas gives Jon Bartholomew to take the king to the widow woman who was so nice since their company got destroyed by the monster before Thomas showed up. Next, to get out to the island, Thomas walks across some rocks and finds a baby dolphin caught in a net. He frees the dolphin with the silver on his jerkin. Momma dolphin takes him on a ride to the island where he immediately finds Eleanor taking care of 12 baby dragons. He is good at helping as he was the oldest of 10 children. Bridgoltha finally awakens and they agree to take turns raising the babies for a 1/3 of the year each, so Thomas takes Eleanor home and is a hero. Cute story for a 2nd/3rd grader.read more
