Geometric shapes and their applications is one of the most important topics of the course. marketing. The objective of the course is to help the learner understand the practical day to day applications of mathematics in life. techniques and formulas in determining measurements.In every facet of our life. This course can be extended to students who find it difficult to grasp basics of mathematics. investment decisions and the like. the chapter on measurements includes identification and application of tools. and introduction to probability pertains to use of suitable statistical methods in analysing data. The importance of Mathematics cannot be undermined be it in utility bills. we come across applications of the subject of Mathematics. the topic application of geometry deals with solving problems related to applications of two and three dimensional shapes. The curriculum for this course includes data analysis. All of us use mathematics consciously or not. It is an observed fact that students find certain concepts like . telephone bills. It comes as a continuation to the Math 156 course. To be more specific. Math 157 is structured for K-8 pre-service teachers. application of measurements and introduction to probability. As part of the two-part Math course series. application of geometry.

a professional teacher would be able to effectively teach and make the students strong concept-wise and skilled in elementary school mathematics. Math 157 is designed to be specifically relevant to a professional mathematics faculty. However. breaking down the question and finding out what is to be done becomes tricky for students. ‘odds in favour or against an event’ at a basic level sweep the students off their feet. On completion of the course. Phrases like ‘find the probability for an event to occur or not to occur’. Examples can help the children see probability as nothing more than the chance of an event occurring or not. The teacher’s ability to make them understand is of paramount importance. Relationship of course content to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for K-8 instruction is included in the course. A teacher would be able to make learning easy and simple for students with the techniques introduced in the course. The goal is to impart vital knowledge about the framework of education in elementary classes. I have found probability based games in the internet to be of great use in learning techniques of problem solving. I would recommend such methods of understanding to students who struggle to get a clear picture of the concepts.probability hard to comprehend without detailed explanations and illustrations. there is no way of forgetting it in the future. bill payments etc. Fun and games can go a long way in making the learning fast and easy. Once a student clearly gets the fundamentals to his/her head. The course contents meet the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. . In probability. the understanding of such concepts become advantageous when it comes to daily tasks like purchases.

The courses are well planned to include important topics necessary for pre-service teachers and the way in which they are organized makes it simple and fun filled. some more can be introduced so that there is more practice per topic. I have certainly honed my skills in teaching and more importantly I have become more creative in developing ideas of teaching. The course makes you think beyond the usual ways of problem solving. to understand different approaches to solving the problem in hand. This is achieved by solving assignment questions in the course. . It has dawned on me that teaching is fun and exciting which leaves your mind charged up and lively. This course has made it easier and fun filled for me. In addition to existing games and illustrations. That has been the effect of the course. From being a profession. like “Text Problems”. The two part series Math 156 and Math 157 is well structured. the concepts and applications become clear with practice.I have realized that teaching need not be monotonous and dull. My understanding of the topics has improved drastically and I believe this experience would help me throughout my teaching career. The nature of the course makes it suitable not just for teachers but also for students who are interested in getting their basics right. teaching has now become my passion. By solving numerous problems. Animations and games are creative methods of teaching and were very useful in my learning. It becomes a learning curve for teachers as well.
