Καὶ ἤκουσε τοῦ ἀγγέλου λέγοντος· Οὕτως ποίει. θέλω σωθῆναι. εἶτα πάλιν εἰς προσευχὴν ἀνιστάµενον· ἦν δὲ ἄγγελος Κυρίου. Anthony was filled with joy and courage. Ὁ ἅγιος ἀββᾶς Ἀντώνιος. δίκαιοι δὲ πένονται. Ἠρώτησέ τις τὸν ἀββᾶν Ἀντώνιον. πῶς σωθῶ. then sitting down and plaiting a’rope. and it is not to your γὰρ κρίµατα Θεοῦ εἰσι. getting up from his work to pray. Ὁ αὐτὸς ἀββᾶς Ἀντώνιος. these things are according λέγουσα· Ἀντώνιε. ἐν ἀκηδίᾳ γέγονε καὶ πολλῇ σκοτώσει λογισµῶν· καὶ ἕλεγε πρὸς τὸν Θεόν· Κύριε. καὶ οὐκ ἐῶσί µε οἱ λογισµοί· τί ποιήσω ἐν τῇ θλίψει µου. It was an angel of the Lord sent to correct and reassure him. ἄλλοι δὲ those who are rich? Why do wicked men prosper and why are the just in need?’ He heard πλουτοῦσι. Anthony saw a man like himself sitting at his work. while others drag on to extreme old ἀποθνήσκουσι. καὶ πάλιν καθεζόµενον καὶ τὴν σειρὰν πλέκοντα. Ἦλθε δὲ αὐτῷ φωνὴ a voice answering him.’ σοι αὐτὰ µαθεῖν. 2 . πῶς τινες ὀλιγόβιοι are young. I want to be saved but these thoughts do not leave me alone. and he was saved. πολλὴν χαρὰν ἔσχε καὶ θάρσος. καὶ οὔτως ποιῶν ἐσώζετο. what shall I do in my affliction? How can I be saved?’ A short while afterwards.’ At these words. ‘Lord. ‘Lord. and attacked by many sinful thoughts. τινὲς δὲ ὑπεργηρῶσι. when he got up to go out. ‘Do this and you will be saved. Ὁ δὲ τοῦτο ἀκούσας. He did this. Καὶ µικρὸν διαναστὰς ἐπὶ τὰ ἔξω. σεαυτῷ πρόσεχε· ταῦτα to the judgement of God. He heard the angel saying to him. ἀτενίσας about the depth of the judgements of God. he πρὸς τὸ βάθος τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ κριµάτων. keep your attention on yourself. καὶ age? Why are there those who are poor and διατί τινὲς µὲν πένονται. He said to God. αʹ. ‘What γʹ. how is it that some die when they ᾔτησε λέγων· Κύριε. καθεζόµενον καὶ ἐργαζόµενον. καὶ σώζῃ. Περὶ τοῦ ἀββᾶ Ἀντωνίου. ‘Anthony. θεωρεῖ τινα ὁ Ἀντώνιος ὡς ἑαυτὸν. καθεζόµενός ποτε ἐν τῇ ἐρήµῳ. 3. 2. asked. then getting up again to pray. καὶ πῶς ἄδικοι µὲν πλουτοῦσι. εἶτα ἀνιστάµενον ἀπὸ τοῦ ἔργου καὶ προσευχόµενον. Someone asked Abba Anthony. When the holy Abba Anthony lived in the desert he was beset by accidie. ἀποσταλεὶς πρὸς διόρθωσιν καὶ ἀσφάλειαν Ἀντωνίου. When the same Abba Anthony thought βʹ. καὶ οὐ συµφέρει advantage to know anything about them.ANTHONY the GREAT 1.
do it according to the testimony of the holy Scriptures. τοὺς temptations no-one can be saved. but control your tongue σου. ‘Our life and our death is θʹ. βραδύνοντες ἔξω τοῦ of the world lose the intensity of inner peace. in whatever place you live. Καὶ ἤκουσα φωνῆς “Humility. παρέρχεται ταύτας. ‘Some have afflicted their ηʹ. Keep these three precepts and you will be saved. Ἔπαρον γὰρ.’ παρελθόντι. ὅτι Ἐκ τοῦ πλησίον with our neighbour. ὅτι Εἰσί τινες bodies by asceticism. ‘What ϛʹ. always have God before your eyes. Ἐὰν γὰρ have gained God. and so they are far from God. Εἶπεν πάλιν. 77 5. 8.’ He even added.’ κερδαίνοµεν· ἐὰν δὲ σκανδαλίσωµεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν. ἔχε ἐκ τῶν ἁγίων Γραφῶν τὴν µαρτυρίαν· καὶ ἐν οἵῳ δ' ἂν καθέζῃ τόπῳ.”‘ λεγούσης µοι· Ἡ ταπεινοφροσύνη. He also said. Τὰ τρία ταῦτα φύλαξον. 10. we have sinned against Christ. Abba Anthony said. 3 . He said also. καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ γέρων εἶπεν· ἃ ἐντέλλοµαί σοι φύλαξον· ὅπου δὲ ἂν ἀπέρχῃ. ‘Whoever has not εʹ. whatever you do. καὶ ἐγκρατὴς γενοῦ γλώσσης καὶ κοιλίας.must one do in order to please God?’ The old man replied. Ὁ αὐτὸς εἶπεν· Οὐδεὶς ἀπείραστος experienced temptation cannot enter into the δυνήσεται εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν Kingdom of Heaven. Λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ not trust in your own righteousness. µακρὰν τοῦ Θεοῦ γεγόνασιν. καὶ οὐδεὶς ὁ σωζόµενος. ‘Just as fish die if they stay ιʹ.’ λέγων· Τί φυλάξας τῷ Θεῷ εὐαρεστήσω. φησὶ. we ἐστὶν ἡ ζωὴ καὶ ὁ θάνατος. 6. He also said. καὶ διὰ τὸ µὴ ἐσχηκέναι αὐτοὺς διάκρισιν.’ ἀσκήσει. τὸν Θεὸν brother. 9. εἰς Χριστὸν ἁµαρτάνοµεν. ‘I saw the snares that ζʹ. so the monks who loiter ἐγχρονίζοντες τῇ ξηρᾷ τελευτῶσιν. If we gain our brother. but if we scandalise our κερδήσωµεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν. ‘Do ἀββᾶν Ἀντώνιον· Τί ποιήσω. Εἶπε πάλιν. “What can get through from such ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ στενάξας εἶπον· Τίς ἄρα snares?” Then I heard a voice saying to me.’ πειρασµοὺς. do not γέρων· Μὴ ἔσο πεποιθὼς τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ worry about the past. καὶ σώζῃ. He also said. ‘Pay attention to what I tell you: whoever you may be. do not easily leave it. Εἶπε πάλιν· Ὥσπερ οἱ ἰχθύες too long out of water. τὸν Θεὸν ἔχε πρὸ ὀφθαλµῶν σου πάντοτε· καὶ ὅπερ ἂν πράττεις. οὕτως outside their cells or pass their time with men καὶ οἱ µοναχοὶ. for fear that if we delay outside we will lose our interior watchfulness. ὅτι Ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐστί τις ὅµοιός σοι. he asked them what it meant. ὥσπερ τὸν ἰχθὺν εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν. καὶ θέλουσί τινες αὐτῶν οἰκοδοµῆσαι κελλία µακρὰν ἵνα ἡσυχάσωσι. καὶ µετὰ τὸ συντυχεῖν ἀλλήλοις.’ So they went out into the desert and they walked until sunset and then Abba Anthony said. But to each one the old man said. Καὶ θέλων ὁ γέρων δοκιµάσαι αὐτοὺς.”‘ 24. and. λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἀµοῦν· Ἐπειδὴ διὰ τῶν εὐχῶν σου ἐπληνθύθησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ. ‘Let us pray and plant the cross κελλίου. One day some old men came to see Abba Anthony. τί ἐστι τὸ ῥῆµα τοῦτο. ‘By your prayers. καὶ διακινήσωµεν 4 . προεβάλετο ῥῆµα ἐκ τῆς Γραφῆς. ‘Let us eat at the ninth hour and then let us go out for a walk in the desert and explore the country. ‘I do not know. How far away from here do you think we should build the cells?’ Abba Anthony said. ιζʹ. Οὐκ οἶδα. In the midst of them was Abba Joseph. Wanting to test them. ‘How would you explain this saying?’ and he replied. ἢ µετὰ κοσµικῶν διατρίβοντες. for he has said: “I do not know. τὴν περισσείαν αὐτοῦ διδοὺς τοῖς χρείαν ἔχουσι. ὅτι εἶπεν.So like a fish going towards the sea. Καὶ ἕκαστος ἔλεγε κατὰ τὴν ἰδίαν δύναµιν. the number of the brethren increases. and every day he sang the Sanctus with the angels. It was revealed to Abba Anthony in his desert that there was one who was his equal in the city. πόσον κελεύεις ἵνα ἀπέχῃ διάστηµα τὰ κτιζόµενα κελλία τῶν ἐνταῦθα.’ 17. Ὕστερον ὅλων λέγει τῷ ἀββᾷ Ἰωσήφ· Σὺ πῶς λέγεις εἶναι τὸν λόγον τοῦτον. Παρέβαλόν ποτε γέροντες τῷ ἀββᾷ Ἀντωνίῳ. Ὁ δὲ γέρων ἑκάστῳ ἔλεγεν· Οὔπω εὗρες. Παρέβαλέ ποτε ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἀντώνιος τῷ ἀββᾷ Ἀµοῦν εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῆς Νιτρίας. πρὸς τὸν τῆς ἡσυχίας τόνον ἐκλύονται. ἰατρὸς τὴν ἐπιστήµην. and some of them want to build more cells where they may live in peace. οὕτως καὶ ἡµᾶς εἰς τὸ κελλίον ἐπείγεσθαι. Abba Joseph has found the way. Abba Anthony once went to visit Abba Amoun in Mount Nitria and when they met. Ὁ δὲ εἶπε· Γευσώµεθα ὥραν ἐνάτην. καὶ ἐξέλθωµεν. beginning with the youngest. Ἀποκρίνεται· Οὐκ οἶδα. Each gave his opinion as he was able. ‘You have not understood it. λδʹ. 81 κδʹ. Λέγει οὖν ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἀντώνιος· Πάντως ἀββᾶς Ἰωσὴφ εὗρε τὴν ὁδὸν.’ Last of all he said to Abba Joseph. Abba Amoun said. He was a doctor by profession and whatever he had beyond his needs he gave to the poor. we must hurry to reach our cell. 34. καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ἡµέραν τὸ Τρισάγιον ψάλλων µετὰ τῶν ἀγγέλων. µήποτε βραδύνοντες ἔξω ἐπιλαθώµεθα τῆς ἔνδον φυλακῆς. Τῷ ἀββᾷ Ἀντωνίῳ ἀπεκαλύφθη ἐν τῇ ἐρήµῳ. ∆εῖ οὖν. καὶ ἦν ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἰωσὴφ µετ' αὐτῶν. καὶ ἤρξατο ἐρωτᾷν ἀπὸ τῶν µικροτέρων.’ Then Abba Anthony said. ‘Indeed. the old man suggested a text from the Scriptures.
but according αὐτοῦ βοῶντος πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν καὶ to your goodness.here.’ γάρ εἰσιν αἱ ῥίζαι τῆς ἀναµαρτησίας. τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦντες. γευσάµενοι τὸ µικρὸν βουκὶν αὐτῶν ὥραν ἐνάτην. ἔτι ὢν ἐν τῷ Arsenius prayed to God in these words. 35. καὶ σκοποῦµεν τὸν τόπον. voice saying to him. on their return. a sword. 2.88 σαν τὴν ἔρηµον ἕως οὗ ἐλθεῖν δῦναι τὸν ἤλιον. φεῦγε. ‘Arsenius. they can take a little food at the ninth hour and then come. λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἀντώνιος· Ποιήσωµεν εὐχὴν καὶ στήσωµεν ὧδε σταυρὸν. Abba Anthony said. ‘Lord. φεῦγε τοὺς and you will be saved. lead me in the way of salvation. a scythe. If they do this. stood Παραβαλόντες δὲ οἱ διακονοῦντες αὐτῷ. καὶ σώζῃ.’ The distance is twelve miles. ἤκουσαν in these words.’ And a voice ὁδήγησόν µε πῶς σωθῶ. ἵνα ὧδε κτίσωσιν οἱ θέλοντες κτίσαι. His servants. ἵνα καὶ οἱ ἐκεῖθεν. let me now make a beginning λέγοντος· Ὁ Θεὸς. καὶ οἱ ἔνθεν ἀπερχόµενοι. so that those who wish to do so may build here. 1. εὔξατο τῷ Θεῷ λέγων· Κύριε. they will be able to keep in touch with each other without distraction of mind. ‘Whoever hammers λεʹ. Καὶ ἤκουσε φωνῆς λεγούσης αὐτῷ· pray always. While still living in the palace. τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπών. I have done nothing good in your sight. πέλυκα. Having withdrawn to the solitary life he βʹ. Ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἀρσένιος. ‘O God. Ἐπέστησάν ποτε τῷ ἀββᾷ Ἀρσενίῳ οἱ sitting in his cell that he was harassed by δαίµονες ἐν τῷ κελλίῳ θλίβοντες αὐτόν. δρέπανον. παλατίῳ. µὴ ἐγκαταλίπῃς µε· 5 . Ἰδοὺ οὖν σὺ ἀναπαύῃ. ὅτι. Ἔλεγον περὶ τοῦ ἀββᾶ Ἀρσενίου. Πῶς οὖν. λέγων· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ ἀββᾶς Ἀρσένιος. for it leads to humility. Ὁ δὲ εἶπε· Ποιµὴν ἤµην. ὅτι οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς ταπείνωσιν. ὧδε οὐκ ἔχει. for I have sinned. ἀββᾶ. Abba Macarius the Great said to the λϛʹ. It was said of Abba Arsenius that once when he was ill at Scetis. καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ χαλάδριον. Περὶ τοῦ ἀββᾶ Μακαρίου τοῦ Αἰγυπτίου. πα104 τὴρ βασιλέων ὑπῆρχεν ὢν ἐν τῷ κόσµῳ.36. Λαβὼν δὲ αὐτὸν πρεσβύτερος κατ' ἰδίαν. this man lying down like this?’ Then the priest took him aside and said to him.’ Then he said to him. καὶ χίλιοι δοῦλοι χρυσόζωνοι καὶ ὅλοι µανιάκια καὶ ὁλοσήρικα φοροῦντες παρειστήκεισαν αὐτῷ· πολύτιµα δὲ στρώµατα ὑποκάτω αὐτοῦ ἦν· σὺ δὲ ποιµὴν ὢν. ‘And how did you live?”I had a very hard life. the priest came to take him to church and put him on a bed with a small pillow under his head. οὐκ εἶχες ἐν τῷ κόσµῳ ἣν νῦν ἔχεις ἀνάπαυσιν· καὶ οὗτος τὴν τρυφὴν ἣν εἶχεν ἐν τῷ κόσµῳ.’ Then the priest said. ‘In the village where you lived. M ACARIUS the GREAT 16. διῆγες τὸν βίον σου. While you were in the world as a shepherd you did not enjoy even the comforts you now have but he no longer enjoys the delicate life he led in the world. Now behold an old man who was coming to see him. καὶ ἔβαλε µετάνοιαν. edified.

’ They said. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο εἰσηρχόµην καὶ ἐξηρχόµην παρακαλῶν τὸν Θεὸν. ἀνηλώθη. λέγοντες· Ποταπὸς ἦν ὁ γέρων ὁ ταῦτα λαλήσας κατὰ τοῦ ἁγίου.
