Bata is one of the biggest footwear manufacturers in the country History
Bata India Ltd (Bata) was incorporated in 1931 as Bata Shoe Company Pvt Ltd at Kolkata. The company was relocated to Batanagar in WB in 1936. Bata started factories at Bataganj in Bihar and Faridabad in Haryana in 1942 and 1951, respectively. In 1973, the company came out with a public issue. In the same year the company acquired its present name. Bata set up plants at Peenya in Karnataka in 1988, and at Hosur in TN in 1994. groups. The family stores sell medium to high-priced basic footwear and the bazaar stores offer volume brands to price-sensitive customers. In CY04, Bata launched Comfort for women, Wind with in-built air technology and Flexible having in-built massage points. In 2004, Bata modernised 11 stores and closed 60 unviable stores. The company also opened 14 flagship/city stores across 12 cities and towns. In CY04, Bata commissioned two manufacturing units in HP and Uttaranchal. In 2005, Bata went in for a rights issue.

The Year in Review
For the year to Dec 31, 2004, total income increased to Rs 7 bn, up 2.8% over the previous year’s figure. Net loss increased 140.9% to Rs 627.5 mn. As per unaudited results for the year ended Dec 31, 2005, the company recorded an income of Rs 7.3 bn and a net profit of Rs 125 mn.
