'Do you think that Dad will come back today, Karen?' John asked. 'I don't know, John,' Karen answered. 'Stop asking me. You ask me ten times a day and I've told you: I don't know when Dad's coming back!' 'But he's been away for two weeks now. It's a long time. Do you think something has happened, Karen? Do you think he's had an accident?' Karen was quiet for a minute. 'Perhaps. I don't know. I just don't know.' Then she walked across the room and looked out of the window. Karen was seventeen, and her brother John was fifteen. They were in Ruali, a small town in a country in Africa. Their father often went into the jungle to look for strange birds. But, usually, he went jor two or three days - not for two weeks. 'John, I have a letter here. A man gave it to me this morning. It's from Dad.' John looked at the letter. The paper was dirty, and there were holes in it; it was difficult to read. 'What does it mean?' he asked. 'I don't understand it.' 2

What does it say? 3 .• Look at the letter.

' She found a large map and opened it on the table.and that must mean "a million pounds"! But that's impossible.that's what the letter says.. let's look at the map. isn't it?' Karen shook her head.. John. 'Now. John. Help me look!' 4 . I'm sure we can find it. Dad hasn't got much money!' 'Of course he hasn't. isn't it? Oh no. we do!' John said. "Please try to find me" . this is where we are. But he doesn't want us to pay. Oh. 'I don't know. Dad went on foot. It says that Qualeefan is a very dangerous man.' Karen said. Look! It says: " . thinks I am very rich" . so it can't be too far away. 'There aren't very many towns near us. He wants us to find him. 'Look. there's a hole in the middle of the letter!' 'Never mind. poor D~d! But how can we find him? We don't know where he is!' 'Yes... This is the name of the town. has taken me as his prisoner" and " .'I think that Dad has been kidnapped.

Can you find the town where Simon Wilson is? 5 L .• Look at the map.

'I agree. 'When we've seen it. They took off later that afternoon. 'I'm going to fly north to go round it.' 'But how can we get there?' John asked. We'll turn south-east in five minutes. But how does that help?' 'I think we should go there.' Karen said.' Karen answered. After ten minutes the sky turned black in front of them. 'It's a long way to walk. ~ 'That's a bad storm. and this man Qualeefan is dangerous.' Bill Bailey said. After fifteen minutes Karen said. Karen watched the storm go behind them. He had a small plane at the airport outside Ruali.' BillBailey knew their father. He's Dad's friend.' John said. That'll F be quite safe.' He turned north and flew past the black clouds. and he agreed to fly them to Golatta. 'Not yet.' 'We'll go by plane. 'We'll ask Mr Bailey to fly us. The children showed him the letter. we can decide what to do.'OK. 'Can we turn east now?' Bill Bailey shook his head. That'll bring us to Golatta in twenty minutes. Then we can look at the town from the air.' 6 . and flew north-east. It's Golatta. silly.

Mr Bailey. 'Nonsense! That's Lake Karoda. Those aren't islands. 'There are a lot of islands in that lake. near the river mouth. Just look out of the window and watch the trees!' • Who was right? Which lake is below them? 7 . He looked at the map carefully.' Bill Bailey laughed. I'm sure it's Lake Mendal.'I don't think so. they're just clouds! 1 have flown planes here since you were a baby! Forget about the map. so we should turn east. It's twenty kilometres west of Golatta.' John said.

'1hope it isn't Gotta. The storm was far away now. I tell you! And there's the chief's house!' Suddenly. They flew south-east. 'I'm sure we're flying towards Gotta. they saw another lake below them. there's nothing like that here.' BillBailey said. 'Dad told us that the people there are dangerous.' John said. and big black birds take them away. on their right. Look!' The plane flew low towards a small town. 8 . this is Golatta. there was a loud noise.' Karen said. and a river running out of it. John looked at the map again.' 'All these jungle towns look the same. 'Dad told us that there is a very tall building in Gotta. They put the bodies of dead people on top of it. He was beginning to get angry.' 'Nonsense. 'For the last time. After fifteen minutes.' 'Well. and the plane moved to one side in the air. right in front of us. The building has a lot of trees round it.' BillBailey said. not Golatta. Some ofthem had guns in their hands. People carne out into the streets and looked up.' he said.' Bill Bailey said. 'But that's the river Mumbeezee. There's Golatta. Mr Bailey.

or Golatta? 9 .• Look at the town below the plane. Is it Gatta.

Finally. towards the ground. remember what Mr Bailey did. The plane began to fly straight down.' 'Well. and it went up again. and the other hand on his stomach.'Bill! They're shooting at us!' Karen screamed.I've never flown a plane before. He had one hand on the joystick. But something was wrong with Bill. as hard as she could.they've shot him!' Bill fell forward in his seat. There was a lot of'blood on his shirt. and move the pedals with your feet to turn right or left: 10 . Hold the joystick with your hands. 'Quick! Take him out of his seat!' Karen shouted. help me .do something!' 'I am! I .aaaaaaaargh!' Bill screamed. Karen!' John said. 'Now what? Can you turn the plane round and fly us home?' 'I don't know . 'John. and his eyes were closed. 'Well done. 'Quick . His face was white. The plane began to climb back into the sky. and pulled the joystick backwards. The town disappeared behind them. Bill?' Billdidn't answer. The plane started falling on its side. into another seat. 'Bill? What's the matter. Then Karen moved into Bill's seat. it flew straight again. 'Bill!' Karen said. John pulled Bill sideways. 'Bill: Karen said. Then Bill pulled back the joystick.

'Perhaps.' 'We'll think about that later.Karen tried turning the plane carefully. If we've got enough fuel. 'But first. I'll check the instruments. Is anything wrong? 11 . It worked.' John said.' • Look at the instruments. just keep the plane in the air. we'll be OK. But I don't know how to land. 'All right.' she said. I think everything is working.

. and then sat in the pilot's seat while Karen put hers on. She looked up.' he said quietly. five .nothing but trees and a river!' Karen was afraid. The engine will stop in a few minutes! What can we do? Can you land somewhere?' 'There's nowhere to land down there . three . jump out. could do that. 'Ask Bill.. and jumped. above her. You put them on like this. She pulled the cord.. She closed her eyes... No one. and there. 'I .. two . and the wind was very strong. 'I can't land this plane in the jungle .. Something pulled hard on her shoulders..Bill will have to do something!' John looked at Bill Bailey. Karen.' John put his parachute on quickly.' 'Wait. His face was very white and his eyes were closed.it's impossible. The forest was a long way below her.. 'Look here!' 'What have you got?' 'Parachutes.' John went to the back of the plane.. The plane's engine stopped. and looked out. Karen opened the door.'We haven't got any fuel!' John said. was a beautiful blue and white parachute! 12 .I think he's dead. and counted slowly: one . four .' Karen said. 'Well. we're going to die too. and pull this cord. She opened her arms wide.

and try to understand what she should do. >~. but how do I open it?' / • Look at the instructions on Karen's parachute. smaller parachute./I. The air is going straight through my parachute. l 13 . She looked up and saw that her parachute was tom.And somewhere above her. What do I do now? I think there's a second parachute. there was another. ~'. 'Oh no!' she thought. there was a loud noise above her head. Suddenly. with John underneath it.

' said John. Look. and the two teenagers could see a lot of animal tracks. and a minute later she was on the ground. With a loud noise the second parachute opened and she went down slowly towards the trees.' she answered. 'You're shaking. 'We'll be OK. When we get there. 14 . Suddenly she realized what she needed to do. We go east towards the river. The trees came towards Karen very quickly. it shows them on the map.' They walked east for an hour. Which way do we go? I don't know where we are. The ground near the river was very wet. 'Are you OK?' 'Yes. Her feet went through the leaves. we must look carefully to see if it's safe . when he landed near Karen. She pulled the ring. until they came to the river.' 'I do. follow me. but that was horrible. There are two places Jhere where we can go across to the other side.sometimes there are crocodiles. Come on.

'.". _. I think it will be OK for us.' • < c 15 .'Are there any people's tracks?' Karen asked..' John said. Do you think it's safe to cross the river here? 'ir("<f oct. There was a small book inside. 'What's this?' she said. ' 'Yes!' said John.' After an hour Karen saw a bag beside the path. John!' she said.. They looked at it closely. 'It's Dad's diary. something was written in code. 'About five kilometres to Golatta. 'Of course. so they crossed the river with no difficulty. I understand now!' 'What do you mean?' John asked. She picked it up and opened it. 'It's not far now. She smiled. Karen looked at it carefully for a minute. 'That's it. It was about birds. but on the last page. 'What does it say?' 'It's Daddy's own code .There were no crocodiles.' It was an old red book. But a lot of the pages are torn or damaged.it's easy! Look at the front of the book!' 16 .' John said.. and then she got out a pencil and a piece of paper and began to write the message down. 'It looks like .

'Now I understand what that word "mine" meant in Dad's letter!' They walked through the jungle. because they heard the voices of people and didn't know if they were friendly or not. and then found a boat and crossed the river.' 18 . They had to hide behind trees three times. 'Look!' Karen said. On the other side of the river there was a hill. As they watched. and hear the bottom of the hill there was a small door. locked it. He closed the door behind him.' They waited until it was nearly dark. 'That door goes into the mine. And I can only move the numbers on the left. At the end of the day they were near a small river. with a lot of numbers on it. 'It's a very strong lock. There was a strange lock on the door. We can't break it. they saw an old man come out of the door in the hill. 'How do we open this?' John asked.'Fantastic!' John said. and walked away.

can't you?' 'Probably/ John said. f /) 19 . John/ Karen answered. ' 'Be quick. You can do it. 'I can see that the column on the right adds up to fifteen. 'You're good at maths. 'I can hear someone corning!' • Quick! Find the numbers to open the lock.'Think. John!' Karen said... And I think the column in the middle is the same .

what are these pieces of paper on the table?' 'I don't know. It was dark in the mine. John. with lights on them. and some are blue. 'Let's try to put them together. They opened the door. 'I think some insects have torn them up. How do we know? Look . What do they mean?' Karen said. 'Some lines are red.' 'Perhaps.' 'There are still a lot of pieces here.' Karen said. 'Isn't this a map on the wall?' 'It doesn't look like an ordinary map. and switched on the light.' 'Come on. Karen and John each put a hat on. some are green. 'Where do we go now?' John asked. and the blue and green ones deeper under the ground. Karen and John went into the room. and found a lot of miners' hats. We must be quick! We haven't got much time and we must find Dad.' John said. but there was a small room on the left of the door. 'Perhaps the red lines are for the paths at the top of the mine. Or perhaps the blue lines are the paths at the ~op. But where is he?' 20 .' said John.

• What do the pieces of paper say? Where are Karen and John on the map? Where is their father and how do they get to him? 21 .

' 'So can I.' John said... 'We're in a green tunnel. 'What's this?' Karen said. They went down to the blue level in a lift. and this is where we have to go. and then up again .' Karen said. 'I can swim underwater for twenty metres. 1 think. and the tunnel went under the water. After a while the sound of water got louder and louder. There's some writing on it. and ran through the dark tunnels. It was very quiet there. ' 'Well.'I can see where we are now. is it?' John looked at the map. 'But 1don't think it's a good idea here .' said Karen. 'No. 'But it's terrible handwriting.it looks dangerous. isn't there?' 'Yes. what are we going to do?' 'I don't know. They could hear water going down the walls. 1don't think so. and it's very dark. 'Come on!' They took the map off the wall. Let me see the map again. 'This isn't on the map. What does it say?" 22 .' John said. But the map shows that the tunnel goes down a little here. Then they came round a corner. and they could hear their feet on the ground.' John was excited. But how can we help Dad to escape?' 'Let's find him first.

or find another tunnel? 23 .• Look at the map. What does it say? Do you think they should swim underwater.

' 24 . but it can still hurt you!' Karen said. 'So am V answered Karen. it's too dangerous to swim underwater in the dark. they arrived at the bottom safely.' said John quietly. 'It can't be far now. 'Oh. 'Look at those teeth!' 'You stand here and talk to it. round the outside of a big hole. and it looked very anpry. we'll look for the stairs. 'Perhaps it thinks we're food!' 'Well.' After a few minutes.' said John. Why isn't it looking at us? What's wrong with its eyes?' 'Oh! I don't think it can see. We could die there.'All right then. A long rope tied it to the wall. It had enormous teeth.' Karen said.' John said. 'I'm afraid. 'But we have to find Dad. They went down and down and down. and the tunnel ends.' They turned back and soon they found the stairs. 'You're right. and in the middle there was the biggest. look!' There was a big open room in front of them. most horrible dog they had ever seen. it can only hear.' said Karen.' 'Yes.there's something strange about this dog. we're not. 'And look . 'Oh no. and I'll walk behind it very quietly.

'Don't worry: 'I hope you're right. even if it hears me: John said. You can't hurt us. good boy: she said. 'Good dog. 'Come here. 25 . Oh.' Karen said. John. you horrible animal.'I think I can see a place where it can't get me. Then she began to talk to the dog. be careful!' ·_ • Look at the picture. and find the path that John must use to escape the dog.

When she was on the other side of the room with John. 26 . . It was so angry that it made a table at the side of the room fall.. Dad will have a terrible accident.' John said. If we send the lift down. 'Instructions! 'We've got to read them! We mustn't make a mistake now!' She put the pieces of paper on the table and looked at them. and ate some papers that were on it. 'But that's what it is.' Karen said. because the dog ate some of the pieces .John moved to the side of the room.. 'I don't know. He might die!' 'There must be some instructions. How do we bring it up?' Karen asked.' Karen said. They were very difficult to read.. It knew he was there. 'Look!' He picked up four or five pieces of paper. 'What was that paper on the table?' 'The dog ate it. 'There's probably water at the bottom of this hole. and its enormous teeth looked like knives. 'Dad is in the lift. The dog made a terrible noise. Karen followed the same path as her brother.' John said. but it couldn't do anything to stop him. they looked at the buttons for the lift.
