GURGAON: Greenobin, a Gurgaon-based start-up has created a sustainable business opportunity in the space of organised waste paper management. Going green, being the latest mantra of success for many entrepreneurs, Gurgaon-based Nitin Goel is cashing on it. For decades waste paper collection has been the job of the unorganised sector (local kabaadiwaalas) present at every single society or office area. However, there lies a huge gap between total paper wasted and recycled. Recognising the deficiency in the supply chain, Goel launched Greenobin, an entity that provides a complete range of independent recycling and waste paper management facilities to both industrial and commercial customers in NCR, including Gurgaon, while reducing volume of waste going to landfill. To avail Greenobin's service, a pick-up request on their website has to be made. From there the waste paper is collected and recycled. Customers are given incentive points which can be redeemed as stationery made from recycled paper. IDEA OF THE HOUR Started in 2009 with just one client, it has seen a 100 percent year on year growth, catering to 70 plus corporate clients in Gurgaon and NCR. "We are getting regular queries from other metros as well," said Goel. Claiming that improved recyclables recovery is the need of the hour Goel said, "Recovery rate is only about 25 percent in India due to the sector's unorganised nature. Greenobin started with the thought of providing sustainable solution to the society for improving this rate." According to him recovery of waste paper is the major challenge in the country. "We don't understand the importance of a sheet of waste paper due to which 10-40 percent composition of any landfill tends to be waste paper. People are not aware about the environmental value of a toll plaza slip that is generally discarded. Greenobin is working to increase awareness and providing the right resource for closing the loop." CHOICE OF GURGAON Goel chose Gurgaon for his startup due to the existence of a lot of business houses here. "Huge number of MNCs gives us a big target market. Besides, MNCs are comparatively more socially responsible," he said. Greenobin has made a number of successful tie-ups with corporates in the millennium city including Apollo Tyres, Citibank, Yes Bank and Standard Chartered Bank among others. Along with paper collection, the company also conducts waste audit and waste management session with corporate offices. "Greenobin has an effective model in place, whereby, they collect waste paper from our office free of cost and in return give us recycled products which can be used in the office," said an executive of a private bank in Gurgaon who did not wish to be named. His company started using the services of Greenobin two years ago. TAP UNORGANISED PLAYERS Goel said that as many as 700 paper mills are already earning their raw material from the waste paper industry and the industry being unorganised, the government is losing out on a lot of revenue, which it can get through taxes from organised players. On the potential the industry holds, Goel said, "Waste paper is part of life today, be it a printout at office, a rough notebook at school or an empty cereal box at home. With its increased usage we see a rise in paper consumption nationally. Demand is increasing everyday. After we forayed into the field there have been a lot of new entrants in the business in the form of NGOs and other private firms," he added. As per Goel, one needs to have knowledge about recycling, a treatment unit and an innovative approach for a sustainable business plan. "Also, one needs to have a passion to be in the business of kabaadiwaala, when you are often compared to a kabaadiwaala."
