John Tesh will bring Big Band to Lakeside
this Saturday night with a performance in
Hoover Auditorium. The Grammy-nom-
inated musician and
former co-host of En-
tertainment Tonight
promises a rousing
concert guaranteed
to get you out of your
seat.
The show that we
put together is really
more like a dance par-
ty, Tesh said in a recent
phone interview. These songs insist that
you somehow get involved, meaning sing
along, grab your partner dance in the aisle,
tap your feet.
The show is arranged in the style of Frank
Sinatra and other hit-makers of the early to
mid-20th century and features such clas-
sic tunes as Summer Wind, Ive Got The
World On A String and Beyond The Sea.
But more than a party, Tesh said the evening
is an inspirational experience where he gets
to talk about the history of each song and
even read from his fathers diary.
We try to give people a reference for
why is this music important to you, he
said. Im able to talk about my travels, my
path through life and how it relates to these
songs.
And what a path its been for Tesh.
He got his start in performing arts at a
young age in a town he says looked like the
hit TV show Glee. First on the trumpet,
then piano, he took his music all the way to
a Blood Sweat and Tears cover band rivaling
a group with Billy Joel.

Students from two-year colleges
across the state will be gathering at
Terra State Community College lat-
er this month for a conference with
their peers.
The Alpha Mu Epsilon chapter of
Phi Theta Kappa at Terra is hosting
the Leadership in Action Confer-
ence, The Culture of Competition,
on July 27-28.
Phi Theta Kappa is an internation-
al honor society for students in two-
year schools. This is the frst time
Terra has hosted the annual event.
For Terra to host the Ohio re-
gional conference here on campus
is something I never would have
imagined, said Seth Sholl, a PTK
member from Tiffn. Its a big event
with lots of two-year students. It will
be great to talk to them and fnd out
where they are from and where they
are going.
Fellow member Kenneth Gyan of
Clyde agrees.
Its an absolute pleasure to be part
of this years Phi Theta Kappa con-
ference here at Terra, he said. I am
excited about attending and volun-
teering at the conference because its
a nice way to build my leadership
skills, meet new people and most
importantly build a good resume.
Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.
July 27 with a general session, Fel-
lowship through Competition.
The second day includes various
general and breakout sessions. A
panel session at 10:30 a.m. will in-
clude Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle
Overmyer, Fremont City School
Board member Juanita Sanchez,
Ohio High School Athletic Associa-
tion Commissioner Roxanne Price,
Heinz Corporations Operational
Risk and Training Manager Cathy
Shell, Executive Director of San-
dusky County Economic Develop-
ment Corporation Kay E. Reiter, and
State Rep. Rex Damschroder.
Planning for the conference has
been a learning experience for the
Terra students.
Im proud of the students who
have put their time and energy into
organizing this event. They are giv-
ing up their free time this summer to
make sure that Terra hosts a success-
ful conference, said Michelle White,
a co-advisor of the group.
The theme of the conference cen-
ters on leadership and our members
have certainly demonstrated that
they have what it takes to get the job
done. We are lucky to have such ex-
cellent people in our group.
The event is scheduled to conclude
at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Some of the students and faculty involved in the conference are: Adam
Reedy (front left), Oak Harbor; Samantha Heishman, Fremont; co-advisor
Nina Schyllander, Waterville; co-advisor Michelle White, Fremont; Katie
Sleek (back left), Gibsonburg; Seth Sholl, Tiffn; and Erika Contreras, Clyde.

Fourteen Bowling Green State
University Firelands College stu-
dents will participate in a pinning
ceremony Aug. 5 for earning their
associate of applied science degrees
in radiologic technology.
We are proud of our graduates
who have completed the program
and have chosen to work in an ad-
mirable profession for the delivery
of healthcare, said BGSU Firelands
Radiography Program Director Syl-
via Fedro.
The graduates have completed a

rigorous program that included a
two-year clinical internship and
they have earned the right to take
the national examination of Ameri-
can Registry of Radiologic Technol-
ogists.
Many of these students will con-
tinue their education in advanced
placement for radiation therapy,
mammography, CAT scan, or MRI
and will work toward a bachelors
degree. We congratulate them all.
Local graduates are: Kimberly
Adkins, Joseph Ihnat and Tara Let-
terhos, of Port Clinton, and Jacob
Burns and Elizabeth Martin-Mol, of
Marblehead.
The pinning ceremony is a
1,000-year-old symbol of service to
others. The earliest ancestor of the
pin dates back to the Maltese Cross
and was adopted by the Crusaders.
The nursing profession assumed
the ceremony for their graduates
and was soon joined by other pro-
fessions that serve in direct patient
care.
The ceremony will be at noon
Sunday, Aug. 5, in the Cedar Point
Center at BGSU Firelands.

In college, Tesh worked with famed radio
personality Rick Dees in North Carolina
before getting bit by the television bug. Af-
ter college, he went on air as a local news
reporter in Durham, N.C.; Orlando, Fla.,
and Nashville, Tenn., before taking a gig
with CBS Sports in Europe. It was there
Tesh was found and tapped for the co-
hosting role on Entertainment Tonight, a
10-year run that kicked off in 1986.
Most recently, Tesh has taken his hosting
skills to the radio with his syndicated show
Intelligence for Your Life, which Tesh
describes as life coaching on the radio.
Thousands of tips and tricks about health,
family, relationships and life are offered
up between songs, some of which Tesh has
even adopted in his own life.
At the advice of experts, he does weight
and interval training and he admits to
hitting the sack each night with a sleep
mask and ear plugs. He also touts the im-
portance of gathering around the table,
putting down the phones and enjoying a
family dinner. But there are some tips that
even he cant get behind.
The tip about not eating ice cream, I
defnitely dont follow.

Whether expected or sudden, death
happens. As a surviving spouse, you
take on a completely new position
in life. All matters, family, fnancial
and legal, rest on your shoulders.
Even if you were always in charge of
the fnances, it will be different. You
will fnd yourself second-guessing
your every decision. It may be time
to involve a child. Their input helps
in the present and prepares them for
the future.
If your husband made all of the
fnancial decisions and now it is up
to you, I can give you a major piece
of advice. Do not walk into your
attorney, your fnancial institution,
your broker or say to your friend,
I dont know anything about this
stuff. This is an invitation for all of
the above to take advantage of that
position and lead you down the path
of higher cost, unnecessary work and
actually misleading you to many bad
decisions. Act like you are aware of
all of your business and that you are
a decision maker who will not be
mislead. The frst item of business in
our offce is to confrm to the surviv-
ing spouse that they are in charge
and all decisions will be theirs.
Do nothing
No one needs paid immediately
and no accounts need changed.
Before any title changing occurs, you
must meet with an attorney and/
or CPA to insure that decisions are
made with income tax, estate tax
and nursing home considerations in
mind. Your health, your age and your
station in life all are contributing
factors in smart decisions and the
distribution of assets.
Disclaiming
There will be NO Ohio estate tax
commencing Jan. 1, 2013. This will
greatly affect what decisions are to be
made at the death of the frst spouse.
Disclaiming an asset directly down
to the children at the frst death can
protect the asset from nursing home
expenses in the future and may be
the proper direction. You cannot
take any money from an account and
then disclaim. This is another reason
to wait before transferring an item.
Appraisal
The law allows you to revalue all
assets and appraise them at the fair
market value on the date of death.
People want to say, please appraise
the item low. This is the exact op-
posite from what you want. If you
have land that was purchased for
$1,000 in 1970 and it now has a
value of $5,000 an acre, when you
sell, you will not owe any income
tax. An apartment building that has
been fully depreciated will now have
a new value and income tax on its
sale will be eliminated. If you keep
the property, you can start over and
depreciate the property again at the
fair market value.
This subject lends itself to many fu-
ture articles. Part of estate planning
is planning for the time when there
is only one of you. Be prepared.

Ohio Environmental Protection
Agency Director Scott Nally says af-
ter a rainfall, up to 8 billion gallons
of raw sewage enters Lake Erie. Nally
said 3 billion gallons enters from
Michigan alone.
Ohio state offcials are appropriat-
ing $3 million to create the Healthy
Lake Erie Fund in an effort to estab-
lish regulatory control with the long
term goal of reducing pollution en-
tering the lake.
The fund will be used by the state
director of natural resources in con-
sultation with the directors of agri-
culture and EPA to implement non-
statutory recommendations from
an Agriculture Nutrients and Water
Quality task force.
The ODNR director is to give prior-
ity to recommendations that encour-
age farmers to adopt agricultural pro-
duction guidelines commonly known
as 4R nutrient stewardship practices.
Funds may also be used for enhanced
soil testing in the Western Lake Erie
Basin, monitoring the quality of Lake
Erie and its tributaries, and conduct-
ing research and establishing pilot
projects that have the goal of reduc-
ing invasive algae blooms in Lake
Erie.
In 2013, the ODNR director may
use $350,000 of the $3 million to
monitor inland lakes and stream wa-
ter quality in Ohio.
The fund is sponsored by District
6 State Rep. Randall Gardner, who
hosted a forum on the subject at the
Lake Erie Welcome Center in Port
Clinton Wednesday.
Among over 100 guests attending
were watershed directors, including
Lake Erie Western Basin director San-
dy Bihn, outdoor writers, property
owners, special interest groups, rep-
resentatives of the boating and fsh-
ing industry, inventors and research
scientists, and local and state offcials.
Bihn suggested that 12 monitoring
locations should be established in
streams and rivers from Defance on
the Maumee River to sites near San-

dusky. She also suggested that technology could bring
much-needed short term relief to the invasive algae issue.
East Toledo Birmingham
neighborhood resident
Peter Ujvagi, now Lucas
County administrator and
former state legislator, was
in attendance, as was Lucas
County Commissioner Tina
Skeldon Wozniak.

Disillusioned
with government
The forum was led by a
panel that included Gard-
ner, District 2 State Senator
Mark Wagoner, and the di-
rectors of the ODNR, EPA,
and ODA.
I think it is important
to acknowledge that your
involvement is recognized,
Gardner said. I know that
some of you are disillu-
sioned with government
nowadays I just want to
make sure that it doesnt
happen with this some-
thing that is important to
our regional economy.
I realize there is going to
be some controversy and
when you are doing some-
thing important, there are
going to be some controver-
sial issues, Gardner added.
ODNR Director Karl Geb-
hardt said agriculture plays
a big role because of its use
of fertilizer, which drains
into Lake Erie and provides
nutrients to invasive algae.
Gebhardt cautioned that
agriculture is not the only source of lake pollution nor is
it the only source of the phosphorous contained in fertil-
izers.
Among issues discussed were open lake dumping, dredg-
ing, factory farms in Southeast Michigan, feld tiling and
drainage, and the use of flter strips on crop felds. One
man in attendance claimed that 20,000 cows and 10,000
hogs at Michigan factory farms produced more waste
than the City of Chicago.
However, Gebhardt said farmers will have to re-shift
their thinking when considering the usage of phospho-
rous in fertilizers.
Among 117 pages of task force recommendations in-
cluded encouraging crop farmers to increase monitoring
of soil nutrients something in which Gebhardt said
is required of livestock farmers but not crop farmers, al-
though many crop farmers are regularly employing soil
monitoring systems now.
We continue to work on the assumption you know,
that we just seem to think we can continue farming the
way our grandfathers did. Well, now things are different,
Gephardt said.
We just dont want to come in with a legislative ham-
mer and say, Thou shalt do this, so thats why we want to
make some changes on the legislative and regulatory side.
Even though algae levels in the lake were down this year,
for the frst time in over a decade, Gardner warned that
algae could continue to spread if something is not done
about it, calling the situation a multi-faceted problem.
All three directors and legislative representatives said
the state will look into incentives for farmers, including
possible tax credits, so agriculture is not taking on all the
fnancial burden.
Next week, the state is launching the Ohio Clean Lakes
Initiative, which will include a branding on behalf of the
agricultural community. Offcials say it is important to
show the agricultural community they have a partner.
This is a big problem, ODA Director David Daniels
said. Weve heard almost everybody here identify mul-
tiple issues it affects people making a living not only
on the land but on the lake as well. Nobody is taking this
lightly. Everybody is working on their piece of the puzzle.
Were dealing with about a half pound of phosphorous
in an acre of water. We want farmers to be productive
we raise enough food in this sector to feed the entire
world. We want good government in the lake and ag com-
munity.

The Kelleys Island Landowners As-
sociation is hosting the 38th Home-
coming festival on Saturday, Aug. 18,
on Kelleys Island.
The theme this year is Celebrate
Kelleys Island. How do you celebrate
the island? It may be swimming or
fshing, relaxing in the sun, maybe
sampling the fne tastes of the pubs
and restaurants or bird watching or
hiking.
Festivities start at 11 a.m. with a pa-
rade along the south shore that ends
at the picnic pavilion on Addison
Street. Last years parade featured a
collection of classic cars, hand-made
foats and lots of unusual costumes
and decorated golf carts and cars. The
parade marshals this year are Vi Feye-
delem and Tony Vacca (Vis Gift Shop
and Papa Ts ice cream) for coming
back after the fre of 2010 destroyed
their businesses.
The parade is open to anyone and
only your imagination can limit your
entry. Golf carts, classic cars, trucks,
lawnmowers, tractors, bikes and
people are all welcome to participate.
There will be trophies for the top
three theme-related entries based on
originality and imagination.
This year there will be two concerts
featuring Frank (Sinatra) and Dean
(Martin) and Then Some and the Fat
City Band. All through the day there
are fun things for the family to do.
Get your fll of hotdogs, roast pork
and Italian sausage and sip cold bev-
erages while shopping the craft and
gift booths. Take in Mona Rutgers
Back to the Wild show and enter the
pie contest (yum). New this is Magic
Mike a master illusionist, balloon art-
ist and magician.
Fill the afternoon with childrens
games and a bounce castle and com-
petitions that include a lip smacking
snack cake-eating contest. Bring your
special pet and compete in the pet
parade. There are gift cards from Pet
Supplies Plus for the most talented,
best costume and pet that looks the
most like its owner. This is a day full
of games, prizes and fun for the fam-
ily. Test your skill in a corn hole tour-
nament or a round of marshmallow
golf.
The festivities are a short walk from
the ferry dock. For info on booths,
the parade or any of the activities,

at kiLandowners@aol.com or Leslie
Korenko at 419-746-2432.
The Ida Rupp Public Library is
pleased to welcome author Teresa
Irish at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.
Irish will speak about her new book
titled A Thousand Letters Home.
After the death of her father, Aarol
W. Bud Irish, in 2006, Teresa Irish
opened the army trunk that had re-
sided in the family home her entire
life. There, nestled in row after row,
were her dads nearly 1,000 handwrit-
ten letters from WWII. Visited only
by him over the course of six decades,
the letters were postmarked from
November 1942 to December 1945.
The fragile and yellowed pages were
written to Buds parents and to the
sweetheart who would become his
wife, Elaine Corbat. From lonesome,
moonlit nights listening to the hit pa-
rade, to the foxholes and front lines
in Germany where Bud would receive
the silver star, the purple heart, and
two bronze stars, to correspondence
with the heartbroken mothers whose
sons died by his side, this is a mov-
ing and historic story of life and loss,
hope and perseverance, unwavering
faith, and true love.
This frsthand account through the
eyes, heart, and words of one soldier
mirrors the journeys of many who
served in WWII - millions of young
Americans abruptly pulled from ci-
vilian life and thrust into the unfa-
miliar world of a military at war. At
every opportunity, Bud poured out
his thoughts and feelings in these let-
ters, all amidst reassuring words to
loved ones a world away. The tran-
sition from boy to man is apparent
in the passing of the weeks, months
and years. A selection of these poi-
gnant letters and accompanying
photographs are contained in the
newly published, A Thousand Let-
ters Home.
This book is for the children, grand-
children and future descendants of all
veterans. This book is for all Ameri-
canslest we forget.
