Dear Editor, Let’s see, the real estate market has gone extremely soft (except for the extremely rich taking advantage of the situation and buying up a vast future profit) yet every property has almost doubled in value in Bedford. I am writing to just find out what exactly is wrong with you people. If you made a mistake at work that cost each of your customers $350.00 to $1,000.00, your boss would probably waste no time in finding your replacement. Your boss might even file a libel action against you. Yet, the commissioners have admitted numerous times that mistakes were made and everyone just rolls over. No wonder the government is so out of contact. Two possibilities come to mind. They know that a lot of people will baulk at the expense of the appraisals and just pay the higher taxes. They could in an arrangement with these appraisers so that both make money. A thought of action: These people work for you; not just to feed their egos and their pockets. You need to hold them accountable. You need to make them work for their ego salving jobs and pay. I recommend replacing them, file a suit against them, not their office, for their incompetence, or send your bill for your appraisal to them to be paid for by them if they continue to insist on this. What is wrong with holding them to the same standards you are held to at your place of employment? Make it their problem and they will fix it quickly. In 1876 Mark Twain wrote, “We will not hire a school teacher who does not know the alphabet…But when you come to our civil service, we serenely fill great numbers of our minor public offices with ignoramuses; we put the vast business of a Custom-house in the hands of a flathead who does not know a bill of lading from a transit of Venus, never heard of either of them before.” September 30th will be the 136th anniversary of that published statement; don’t you think that it is time that things changed? It is your government. Take it back, take back your country, your government, your community as your Founding Fathers had intended. United We Stand, Divided We are Intimidated. Sincerely Yours, Jon Vincent Deacon
