CULTURAL INFORMATICS: A FIELD OF

COLLABORATION FOR VARIOUS SPECIALISATIONS

Master of Arts Thesis

Interuniversity Postgraduate Program in Museology
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
ABSTRACT
For the realization of digital culture projects, the application of art and technology, the
coexistence and the collaboration between museologists and the computer science
people is needed. The introduction of the IT in museums is difficult, because the
museum is very complicated concerning the experience it offers, the interaction of
the visitors with the exhibits and of the design of the museum exhibition. Thus, the
collaboration between different scientific specializations presents a series of issues
for discussion. The theme of this dissertation is the evaluation of the collaboration
between the museologists and the computer scientists in the framework of the Digital
Culture projects that were funded by the Information Society. The methodology used
for answering the research questions was the analyses about the spatial distribution
of the digital cultures projects, the kind of institutions funded and the comparison of
these institutions according to their type. Moreover, qualitative data were collected
with the aid of interviews. In these cases, a structured questionnaire was used, which
was created for the needs of this dissertation following the recommendations of the
supervisor, the observation and the publications concerning the selected projects.
The research results provided some interesting conclusions. New models for the
exploration of the real aim and orientation of the virtual museum must be proposed. It
is evident to carefully select the practices and the tools that will be used for the virtual
museum realization. They must be a guidance of the computer scientists by the
museum people concerning the practical section of the application design and the
active collaboration of the museum people in all the project phases. Also, they must
be a fairly distribution in both scientific teams of the budget according to their work
and participation in all projects phases. The economics must have rules that must
also be followed by both teams. Finally, the evaluation of the digital culture projects is

an evident part of the project that must not be omitted. It is this part that permits the
improvement and certifies the effectiveness of the culture project products, if they
satisfy their user needs.
