Cert 1 ESD Compulsory Unit

You are required to develop an assessment portfolio for the Certificate 1 ESD.

What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of carefully selected work that showcases your achievements for the Cert 1 ESD and the progress you have made.

Why develop a portfolio?

There are several different types of portfolio and each have a different purpose.

Growth Portfolio
This portfolio includes work that shows your progress over time. It can be used to help you reflect on what you have learnt and then work out future goals for learning. The main purpose of this portfolio is to show progress.

Showcase Portfolio
This portfolio is like your own personal brag book as it shows all the great work you have done and your achievements. The main purpose of this portfolio is to show your best work and the final products.

Evaluation Portfolio
This portfolio is where you show that you have achieved the learning outcomes for a particular course you may be doing. The main purpose for this portfolio is to demonstrate you have achieved the learning requirements. A portfolio may include elements of all the different types and be used for a range of different things. The Cert 1 ESD portfolio is mainly an Evaluation portfolio and will be used to demonstrate that you have achieved the outcomes for the Certificate 1 ESD. However, there are certainly elements of all three portfolios included, as there will be the opportunity to look at some your early work and reflect on the progress you have made (Growth Portfolio) and you may want to share your portfolio with others and show off all your great work (Showcase Portfolio).

What can I put in my Portfolio?

You need to make some decisions about what to put in your Portfolio so that there is enough information in there to demonstrate all your great learning. Watch out you dont put everything in there!!! You need to select your work carefully so have a chat with your teacher or case manager and they can help you out with this one.

Here are some ideas to think about:

Rough drafts of work and then final drafts Editing checklists Goals you have identified Reflection sheets Results of any assessments you have done Certificates and awards Self assessments Peer assessments Learning tasks

Who will look at my portfolio?

Portfolios are meant to be shared and provide a great opportunity to celebrate your successes! Thinking about the audience of your portfolio will help you to decide what information to put in it. Your facilitator and case manager will support you in developing your portfolio, so they will definitely see your work. TafeSA will also see your work as they will accredit the learning you have done in the Certificate 1 ESD course.

Some other people you may choose to share you work with are:
family friends school staff employers

How do I organise my portfolio?

Think about ways to make your portfolio easy to read and understand. You may like to think about including: list of contents summary headings for different sections graphic organisers e.g. navigation maps

Remember, if you are using digital media you still need to think about how to organise your work

Some other questions to consider include:

Where will I store my portfolio to keep it safe? Will I collect my work samples as I go or wait until the end to pull my portfolio together? Who are the best people to support me to develop my portfolio? How will I share this information when I have finished my portfolio?
