Cell Towers of Santa Cruz, California 2012 Prepared by Angela Flynn greenevolutionusa@gmail.

com Many people think of the classic high tower filled with transmitters, however most cell towers are stealth towers. Stealth towers are often disguised as flag and light poles, signs, fake chimneys and smoke stacks and trees. Cell tower transmitters emit radio frequency radiation in the microwave band of the electromagnetic spectrum and is commonly referred to as RF, MW, EMF/RF and RF/MW. Microwave radiation exposure is implicated in many ill health effects including brain tumors, acoustic neuromas, salivary gland tumors, breast cancer, testicular cancer and more as studies find that this radiation adversely affects brain, hormonal, cardiac, immune and reproductive functions, with resulting sleep and cognitive impairments, fatigue and depression, hyperactivity and agitation, heart arrhythmia, tinnitus, cancer and more. Local planning departments should have databases of transmitters sites. Often one has to go the Planning Department and look up an individual site to find out how many transmitters are on a site and how strong and what direction they are aimed at. People in their homes and businesses that are in direct line of sight and close to transmitters will have the highest exposures. Most planning departments encourage co location of transmitters. This means that a site that may have started out with just a few transmitters will have more transmitters added to it. The needs of 4G require more and more transmitters at higher and higher levels of transmit power. For instance the cell tower on the Public Storage building at 3840 Portola Drive is scheduled to have 9 more Verizon transmitters added to the already existing 6 MetroPCS transmitters. (See http://sccounty01.co.santacruz.ca.us/planning/plnmeetings/PLNSupMaterial/Zoning/agendas/2012/20120803/006.pdf) A recent addition of 3 Verizon transmitters to the already existing 4 AT&T transmitters to the cell tower at 2325 Riverside Drive in Watsonville raised the RF levels from 52% to 79% of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Maximum Public Exposure (MPE) guidelines. (See APN(S): 110-191-11 http://sccounty01.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/planning/plnmeetings/ASP/Display/ASPX/DisplayAgenda.aspx? MeetingDate=3/2/2012&MeetingType=2 - click on Agenda Item 2 to get details.) Industry is also moving to distributed antenna systems (DAS). These transmitters go up on utility poles or other stationary objects. There is little oversight on these installations. The Department of Public Works may have a database of DAS. Following are the database of wireless facility sites prepared by the Santa Cruz County and City Planning Departments and pictures of some of these sites.
