Special Report: Six different answers
to the same question?
Anywhere, USA Ties right into an election year! I was sad, but not surprised when I watched a recent expose on the NBC Evening News. This time, though, the topic was not fast-talking and evasive politicians, but rather HVAC "professionals" responding to a very specific problem. The premise was that the network, with the aid of thee industry professionals, would cause a home air conditioning system to fail by breaking one of its wires. A woman posing as the homeowner called six contactors to evaluate the problem, discuss the solution and quote a price to remedy the failure. What happened next is why this industry remains draped in confusion, and suffers a bad reputation. Every one of the six servicemen found the broken wire. However, each one of them recommended that other parts and services that would be needed to keep the equipment working. Their price quotes ranged from a few hundred dollars to almost one thousand. Immediately after presenting their findings and proposed to the homeowner, an NBC reporter with a

news crew in tow revealed themselves in an attempt to question the diagnosis and proposals. Only two of the six contractors actually remained to defend their recommendations; the other four rushed for their tools and attempted to make their escape - into vehicles plastered with the company's logo(s). Watching with a degree of experience in the industry, I could only defend the recommendations of the one contractor who suggested doing annual maintenance. He may have been relaying good information, but even that was shrouded in a lie by his comment that the coil was dirty, when

He may have been relaying good information, but even that was shrouded in a lie by his comment that the coil was dirty, when in fact, it had been thoroughly cleaned just a day earlier. Instead of being able to support any of the six recommendations, I was saddened to hear all six came up short in the 'honest service' department. This revealing news segment did a lot to further widen the divide between honest contractors, and trusting homeowners. Granted, there are times when expensive repairs do need to be made. Component parts and equipment are built to last between five and ten years. That's why you are offered a ten year parts warranty on new equipment. But without proper installation and maintenance such as annual servicing, the expected life span can be shortened dramatically. Here's a good rule of thumb: if a repair will cost you

• Well…to be perfectly fair I have to start by pointing out that Franklin is a blonde. I am hoping that this is really the only reason he left out the most important part of information in last months Dog’s World article. The directions! How does anyone really know what they are missing if they do not know where to go? Sure he can tell you about how much fun we had, but hey Frank, how about some cross streets a small map, anything. So I have decided to forgo my usual rant or update, and instead clean up Frank’s mess from last time and put an end to this mystery! So below is some information to get you out and amongst the swimming dog enthusiasts.

You can’t tell by the temperature outside but summer is winding down and the days are getting shorter. Well, I must be getting old, because this summer seemed to fly by. Not sure I slowed down enough to enjoy it fully, but better luck next year, I guess. I hope this article finds you well, as we seem to be having a great month in our world. I recently saw a couple movies that turned out better than anticipated. I will break them down to good better and best. Best - Batman Better - Spiderman Good - Bourne Legacy I must say that the price of seeing a movie today seems more like going to see a local major league sporting event. I digress, as it was much more enjoyable and easier than trying to find something to watch on TV. We have how many stations with nothing to watch? Making my
