1 2.30-2.40pm Several thousand Liverpool supporters gather outside the smaller Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough. Admission through the ageing turnstiles is slow and, as kickoff nears, a dangerous crush begins to develop in the surrounding area.

2 2.50pm As fans slowly filter into the ground, pens three and four in the lower terrace soon fill to their 2,200 capacity. It later transpires that a maximum of 1,600 supporters should have been allowed into the pens, as their crush barriers did not meet safety standards.

3 2.52pm Minutes before the game gets under way, police order exit Gate C to be opened to alleviate the congestion. Around 2,000 supporters enter and make for the tunnel leading directly to pens three and four, crushing fans already inside against the metal fence at pitchside.
