[MINOR PROJECT PROPOSAL]
Minor Project Proposal
By Andriana Laskari and Dayle Sanders
Our task as a group is to create an animated short specifically focusing on character design and character performance with minimal attention to the environment. Restriction on the environment will allow us to stylise it in such a way that it will avoid shading and depth and concentrate on flat textures and pure brush-strokes. Perhaps contained in the geometry, patterns will take form, a similar affect to what artists of the symbolist movement used such as Gustav Klimt and Leonid Afremov. Our area of study is the Mythical Creatures of the Himmapan forest according to Thai and Southeast Asian Mythology. The style will be inspired by Thai Murals, shapes, sculptures, jewellery and paintings. Our environment is located in the Himalayan Mountains, according to the descriptions of the Himmapan Forest. Its look will most likely be flat, rich in patterns and colours.. We also feel very inspired by the film The Secret of Kells, where the lively characters are placed in beautiful handmade environments; a refreshing change from the recent rise of CGexclusively based films. We will aim to convey several ideas organised through re-creating Thai themes and amalgamated themes belonging to artists and films. Very briefly, we will try to explain the behaviour of the characters through design and stylisation, as well as consciousness and representation through animation. Our goal is to create two stylised characters in a rich, handmade environment. One of them is a female/ swan hybrid, the other is a quadruped mixed with lion, bird and crocodile features. There will be no dialogue involved which will allow us to make the characters as expressive as possible with great attention to their body language and facial movements.
