Do generic conventions help or restrict film makers?

We think that it restricts writers because...

If no new themes and twists are introduced the audience will get bored. Can prevent the writers from pushing the boundaries with their creative writing.

We think that it helps writers because...

It guides the writer and ensures their film will be a certain genre and not cross into another. It ensures we have enough genre familiarity in society. Yet, we will still have different plots due to different writers.
