At the 2007 Annual General Meeting (11 December 2006), the member clubs of Brisbane Hockey Association voted to award Life Membership of the the Association to Mrs Phyllis Hawgood.
While Phyllis's interest in Hockey began in her youth, she also married into a Hockey family. Consequently, as you might expect, she reared a Hockey family of her own. While her family was growing up Phyllis involved herself at a Club level.
It was in 1991 that she first became involved directly with the administration of this Association. Phyllis served as Brisbane Hockey Association Honorary Secretary from 1991 through to 1996. Then for the next three years Phyllis worked in the BHA Office as a volunteer. She also involved herself in the many of the Hockey events of the day including the 1999 Champions Trophy which was held at the State Hockey Centre.
At the end of 1999 Phyllis decided to nominate for the Brisbane Hockey Association Board of Management and was subsequently elected as a Director for commencement of the 2000 Season. Phyllis has continued as a Director and has now accumulated a total of thirteen years of service in executive positions, at the time of this award.
In 2003 Phyllis received a Brisbane Hockey Association Merit Award. Other aspects of Hockey in which Phyllis has involved herself include her prominent role as a Technical Bench Official and her training and management of the Brisbane Cheer Squad (Brisbane Blades, etc). Congratulations, Phyllis.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Three years ago, I took on the role of leading the Brisbane Hockey Association and it is with a sense of pride that I write this, my third and final Presidents Report. As much as I continue to enjoy the role and still believe theres lots to achieve, the demands of my day job (in particular the weekly travel requirements), mean that I cant give the role of BHA President the time and energy that I would like. It is therefore with regret that I wont be nominating again for the 2008 season. I want to thank everyone for your assistance and support over the past three years its been a most interesting and enjoyable journey. The 2007 season saw the expansion of our BHL1 competition from seven teams to ten with the addition of teams from: Labrador; United (a joint venture between Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club and South West United) and QUT. This was a most pleasing development and sincere congratulations to each of these Clubs for taking the risk and being part of the BHL1 competition. A testimony to the success of this expanded competition was the fact that the last semi-final spot (i.e. fifth in the competition) came down to the very last fixture of the season. Valley accounted for Pine Rivers St Andrews Norths in the 3:00pm match to claim the fifth spot but were then replaced by Labrador when they defeated Bulimba in the following 4:30pm match. Labrador had successfully made the finals play-offs in their first season a tremendous effort. There were many other highlights from 2007, including:
Bisley took a strong leadership role with this event and it turned out to be one of the best-ever Medal Dinners. There was a tremendous turnout with all BHL1 teams strongly represented thanks to everyone involved with this event.
The re-opening of the Redcliffe turf facility which meant that we were
able to significantly reduce the number of late games on both Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to the Redcliffe Committee for getting the playing surface (and surrounds) restored and available for fixtures.
Daryl Sahli and his hard-working sub-committee organised the firstever BHA Corporate Hockey Day held in February 2007, this was very successful. The day was tied in with the Test Match between the Kookaburras and the Dutch team at Colmslie. It was a fantastic day and hopefully, the start of an annual event on the BHA calendar.
The new initiative to reward Clubs for expanding the ranks of their Junior players particularly at the Minkey level. Congratulations again to Daryl Sahli for identifying and promoting this initiative throughout the year.
Excellent results at this years Premier League & State Open Championships. For the first time, BHA was the host organisation for these dual championships and the organising committee did a brilliant job with this tournament. I especially want to thank Greg Swann, Bruce and Veronica Luck, Phyllis Hawgood, Kim Rendell, Paul Saunders and the myriad of other volunteers who made it such a friendly and successful weekend.
Kim Rendell for the many hours of hard work that he has dedicated to
our Association. His passion and expertise in relation to our website has placed it at the forefront of the hockey community and provided everyone with an easily-accessible location to keep up to date.
Two years ago, Peter Harten agreed to join the BHA Board to lead our
initiative to rebuild our Brisbane Representative Program. The results achieved this year across both Junior and Senior teams are as a direct result of Peters dedication and hard work. Peter thanks for your efforts with this Program and congratulations on the results youve achieved.
To Darran Bisley for his efforts in all development areas throughout the
year Brisbanes achievements at the various levels are a testament to his work.
Also, thanks to Susan Johnston for all of her efforts in ensuring our
books are once again, up-to-date and accurate.
The BHA Web Site has continued to go from strength to strength with
a particular highlight from this year being the Premier League/State Open web site that provided all hockey fans with up-to-the minute results and scores. Congratulations to Kim Rendell for leading the way across Queensland with this initiative.
Norm Ludwig for his many hours of behind-the-scenes work in assisting Susan with the accounts and prompt payments.
To the BHA Junior Committee for their excellent work in providing playing opportunities for all of our Junior Players.
Another feature of our web site this year was the photographs and
BHL1 feature stories provided by Lee Oliver. Lee continues to demonstrate his commitment to the sport of Hockey and his journalistic prowess on a regular basis and it is high time, Hockey Queensland recognised Lees continuing contribution to our great game.
Rohan Force and his band of First Aid Officers who were always there
to assist when required.
Gil Voysey and his Veterans Committee worked hard throughout the
year to again, deliver an expanded Veterans competition. Their excellent efforts in hosting the National Veterans Championships in October also need to be acknowledged.
All BHA Coaches and Managers for the investment of time and expertise that you put into developing our representative teams and players
-9-
To the Club Delegates (to both the Senior and Junior Delegates bodies) for attending the many meetings and for providing feedback and input into the running of our Association.
And last. but by no means least to my fellow Board members for the
many hours of personal time that you have given up to assist with the running of the game for all Brisbane players. Thank you all. Finally, thanks again to everyone for your support and friendship over the past three years and all the very best for 2008. With best regards
condition of the other fields. The matches of the CHL Finals series were played on the SHC grass fields. Veterans Hockey League (VHL) matches were played exclusively on Tuesday nights. Both of the surfaces at the SHC as well as the Redcliffe surface were used to accommodate the eight matches required.
REPRESENTATIVE
Brisbane's representative teams performed very well throughout 2007. The players of each representative team along with the coaches, managers and results are listed in the Representative Teams 2007 section later in this report. All are to be congratulated for a job well done. I wish to thank the BHA Director of Sporting Outcomes, Peter Harten, for his efforts in this area. He made use of the information and data gathered in 2006 to improve the organisational aspects of the 2007 representative programme. Thanks also go to Tracy Wallis for the effort she put into the management of the BHA uniforms and for her involvement with accommodation and travel arrangements.
Colin Murphy
BHA President
G E NE RAL SE C R E TA RY ' S R EP O R T
To be presented at the Seventy Fifth Annual General Meeting of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc to be held at Sports House, Milton, on Monday 3rd December 2007. Cr. Newman, Mr. Murphy, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the 2007 Season. The 2007 Season can be judged a success, both on the field and off the field. This has been realised through the ongoing dedicated efforts and commitment of your Association's President and Board, the many officials and delegates of the Clubs, as well as the various BHA and Club Coaches and Managers. Without the involvement of these and other volunteers your Association would not exist.
PL & SO CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year BHA was required to host the Men's Premier League and State Open Championships at the SHC, 5th - 7th May 2007. By all accounts the BHA Committee did an excellent job of organising and running this prestigious event with praise and positive comments coming from all quarters. I'd like to particularly thank the BHA President, Colin Murphy, for his guidance throughout, the Director of Operations, Greg Swann, for his exceptional efforts as Tournament Convenor, the Tournament Director, Phyllis Hawgood and her team who managed the playing side of the tournament, and Bruce and Veronica Luck who managed the catering, including the manning of the burger tent with their band of volunteers . The Association did such a great job that BHA has been called upon to host the 2008 Men's PL & SO Championships at the SHC.
FIXTURES
In contrast to the early starts of recent years the 2007 Season commenced in late March for all Divisions. Once again there were many interruptions to the Fixture schedule brought about by the usual array of events scheduled for the State Hockey Centre (SHC). The 2007 season dates have been summarised in the table below. Neither the Memorial Cup nor the President's Trophy Finals were contested as separate matches in 2007. They were awarded to the leading team in each Senior Division following the completion of the first complete round in the case of the Memorial Cup and following the completion of the second complete round in the case of the President's Trophy. The winners are listed later in this report. There were two new venues used for this year's Brisbane Hockey League (BHL) matches. They were the newly resurfaced Redcliffe Hockey Centre at Mary Nairn Fields, Redcliffe and Labrador Hockey Club's new surface at Keith Hunt Park, Gold Coast. As part of its agreement with Labrador Hockey Club for the inclusion of its team in the BHL1 competition, BHA agreed to schedule matches at the Gold Coast on four occasions. The ten team BHL1 and the nine team BHL2 competitions were played exclusively on Saturdays while the BHL3, BHL4 and BHL5 competitions were played predominantly on Sundays. At least one BHL3 match was regularly scheduled each Saturday in order to avoid the use of the unpopular 7:30pm timeslot on Sundays. The Junior Divisions were played exclusively on Saturday mornings. Restricting each of the Association's playing divisions to specific days and times provides players, officials and supporters alike with certainty and allows them to better plan their weekends. The Classic Hockey League (CHL) divisions continued with the central venue concept. Matches were played almost exclusively on the grass fields of Shaw Park each Saturday. Late in the season some matches were transferred to other fields in order to rest Shaw Park and to test the 2007 FIXTURES Commenced: BHL1 5 Sat 24th Mar
STANDING COMMITTEES
During 2007 the Judiciary Committee was convened to investigate fourteen incidents involving members of the Association. This required a total of ten nights as on some occasions the Committee was able to hear more than one case on the same night. An Appeals Committee was only required to form on one occasion. I thank the members of each of these committees as well as those who volunteered to stand in from time to time. The full-time members of these committees are listed under Officials on page three. Each of the Selection Committees have functioned well this year under the Sporting Outcomes portfolio. Team selections were generally provided in a timely manner allowing for team training and uniform distribution prior to all championships. A Grounds Committee was not formed. The Association liaised directly with the various venue operators, including ShawSportz Ltd and Hockey Queensland, regarding all matters pertaining to the use of grass fields.
M EETINGS
The BHA General Committee met on eight occasions beginning with its first meeting immediately following on from the AGM on 11th December 2006. The BHA Board of Management met on eighteen occasions. This year's Corporate Planning sessions were held on 21st October and 4th November. The majority of these meetings were held at the SHC, either in the BHA Office in the case of the Board Meetings or in the Hockey Queensland Players' Room, in the case of the General Committee Meetings. However, some were also held at Sports House, Milton, including the AGM and the second of the Corporate Planning sessions. The first Corporate Planning Meeting was held at HQ on Lytton. On several occasions use was made of a video link (Skype) to allow the the President, who was interstate on business, to participate in meetings. The BHA organising Committee for the Premier League and State Open Championships also met on several occasions prior to that event. While some of these were held in the BHA Office, others were convened using a telephone conferencing service allowing the participants to dial in from home.
BHA extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during the year. Finally I thank my wife Mary and my family for their continued patience and understanding.
COMMUNICATIONS
The communications needs of BHA are now almost entirely met by the use of the Internet. All meeting notices, fixture draws, invoices and general news and updates are now emailed to Clubs and their Delegates and are posted on the BHA Website - www.bha.org.au. As part of the Website's usual pre-season makeover this year I installed a dedicated open source, content management system (CMS). Apart from providing a more consistent look and feel throughout the site it also allowed selected volunteers to participate in the ever increasing task of posting and maintaining content. An example of this involvement included the access given to each affiliated Club to maintain their contact details under the BHA Clubs section of the site. The BHA Coaching Development Manager, Darran Bisley, was given access to the Representative Teams section to maintain up to date information and details of representative teams including training times and details of the respective Championships. Others who were given access were the Hon Secretary of the BJHC, June Grant, who maintained the Junior scores as well as all Points Tables; the Umpire Coordinator, Jonathan Brough, who entered the BHL Umpiring allocations; and of course Lee Oliver, who was given access to the BHL fixture area where he posted his reports and photos throughout much of the season. The Veterans Draw was once again integrated into the main site however I was unable to enlist the assistance of anyone to post Veterans scores and information. Several new features were also added during the year. These included: an integrated events calendar; use of an online spreadsheet service (EditGrid) for displaying the Points Tables; links to a weather service (Weatherzone) to provide the latest weather information, links to a map service (GoogleMaps) to display the location of Clubs and venues, and a small applet (Feedjit) that displays visitor location information. A Visitor Comments module was also trialled during the year. It was heavily protected from spam and unacceptable words by use of a CAPTCHA authentication module and a black word list which automatically bars offenders. However it was switched off in October following complaints from the officials of an affiliated Club. It is thought that this very popular feature could be reintroduced providing a moderator was in place to remove any postings that were likely to offend.

TREASURER'S REPORT
FINANCE
On behalf of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc I submit the Financial Statements of the Association for the year ending 30 September 2007, following in this report. The financial position of the Association, against the Budget forecast, seems to be better than anticipated but is skewed by a number of factors. The position of RCD was not filled, grants to clubs for an increase in Junior numbers was not fully paid, player development funds were not fully utilised and general administration costs were well contained. We have implemented a direct payment system for most suppliers, including First Aid, Umpires and Technical bench and hope to further enhance the electronic payments. Payments to all facilities' providers, including all Hockey Queensland invoices, have also been paid expediently. BHA would, without doubt, make the most prompt payments of any Queensland Association and should benefit by way of a bonus from Hockey Queensland. The financial situation of BHA Inc is sound without being excessive and we have continued to control costs and to carefully manage Association funds. The Board of BHA Inc is fully aware for the need to generate greater income and is moving forward with a number of proposals that will be evaluated in conjunction with the second year of our Strategic Plan. Without the efforts of the following people, the role of the Financial Director would be virtually impossible.
Norm Ludwig, for his diligent and thorough checking and follow-up on
BHA financial obligations.
Greg Swann, for his expertise with representative team bookings, airfares transport and accommodation, in conjunction with Tracy Wallis and June Grant.
The on-going cooperation and drive of BHA President, Colin Murphy. Kim Rendell, for assistance with all day to day matters. Finally, BHA is indebted to all Club Treasurers for their voluntary time
and efforts in keeping their Clubs in good financial health.
FACILITIES
BHA utilises the facilities of the State Hockey Centre, which for this season had a replacement carpet on SHC2, Redcliffe hockey which came back on line also with a completely upgraded wet/dry surface and Burringbah Park for its fixtures. Labrador Hockey Club's artificial surface was a new inclusion and was used for BHL Division 1 and 2 Fixtures on a number of occasions throughout the season. ShawSportz grass fields at Kalinga were used until the impact of Touch Football and the continual wear it causes and the on-going severe drought conditions made it necessary to rest those fields. Our thanks to Commercial Hockey Club for the assistance they offered and to the SHC for use of the grass fields as a satisfactory backup venue. The Tin Shed at the SHC, is the present home for the BHA Office in the short term but it could not be envisaged that this temporary office space will be adequate in future years. On-going discussions with interested parties are continuing as part of the Brisbane Hockey Association's forward planning. Any and all developments of new facilities are constantly under evaluation in the context of suitability for this Association.
CONCLUSION
In concluding this report I wish to thank all who have assisted and contributed to the relatively smooth running of the Association throughout 2007. Without such assistance and involvement from volunteers this Association would be unable to function.

COMPETITIONS
Well another season has passed - as we get older they seem to go faster. The reopening of the turf at Redcliffe benefited everyone due to the increase in the number available timeslots. This saw the 7.30pm game become virtually a thing of the past. I think that the players appreciated getting their evenings back. A close cooperative working relationship between BHA and BWHA allowed clubs on several occasions to have their teams together at the same venue throughout the season. At this point I would like to acknowledge the tremendous support and cooperation of my BWHA counterpart, Jenny Heron. The reintroduction of a 10 team competition in first division was met with mixed feelings. Some felt that it gave players from clubs who might not have been given the opportunity in an eight team competition of fielding a 1st Division side the exposure to competition at a high level, whilst others felt that the gap between the top teams in the division and those at the bottom of the ladder was too great and not beneficial to either the image or quality of our sport. The on-going drought affected our Classic League games in that the standard of playing surface deteriorated as the season progressed and the constant use of one venue took its toll on the fields. This resulted in games being transferred to other venues. Should weather conditions (and resultant water restrictions) continue next year, BHA really needs to look at rotating their grass game venues monthly so that grounds are given a reasonable chance to recover. Special thanks must go to Jonathan Brough and Rowan Green for undertaking the thankless but essential task of organising umpires for each round. Thanks also to the Vets Committee for organising the Vets competition. The Junior competition would not have been possible without the huge input of June Grant and Greg Swann and their helpers. The job of Director of Competitions has become really too big for one person and also very time-consuming, particularly if held by someone in full-time employment. It is an honorary position and clubs need to remember this when requesting changes to fixtures and registration issues at short notice. BHA Management is aware that, as our game has changed, the competition rules need to be revisited also. It is anticipated that this will occur prior to the start of the 2008 season. In closing I would like to extend my thanks and best wishes to all who have assisted me this season in getting my job done, in particular, Kim Rendell whose job often extends well beyond his office hours and impinges on his time with his very understanding family.
with the male championships at the State Hockey Centre in Brisbane. Hosting the championships was also delegated to the host centre. On a short timeframe, BHA organised and ran the 2007 Premier League and State Open championships. At the outset we set out to provide an enjoyable tournament with a traditional carnival atmosphere for the players and officials. A planning committee was formed and the success of the tournament reflected the solid foundation laid by the planning committee. Phyllis Hawgood was appointed as Tournament Director and worked closely with the planning committee to ensure the committee was able to meet the needs of the competition as well as the off-field needs of players and officials. BHA provided a barbeque and a drinks stall on the hill so that all could have food and drinks available where they could watch the games in progress. Feedback from players and associations was positive with positive comments about the atmosphere created and the food service being available across the late matches. Special thanks to Bruce and Veronica Luck for their tremendous effort in making the barbeque a success and to Bruce for his organisation to provide the facilities required. Thank you to Tracy Wallis and her team for organising and providing catering for the officials across the tournament. Two key aspects of making the barbeque and drinks stalls a success was the negotiation of an arrangement with BWHA for the supply of drinks and sharing profits and volunteers to operate these services. Thank you to Mary Cockings for her support through the BWHA canteen and players bar which saw a good relationship develop and extend to the State Veterans Championship and Brisbane Grand Final Day. Clubs were asked to organise volunteers to staff these services across the long weekend with a share of the profits returned to the clubs. This was a new initiative to gain volunteers and importantly return some of the profits to hockey clubs. Thank you to the clubs who provided volunteers to run these services.

SPORTING OUTCOMES
The 2007 season was a busy one that started with Brisbane hosting the male Premier League and State Open (PL&SO) Championships over the May long weekend as well as supporting the State Veterans tournament over the June long weekend. As well as this attendance at tournaments in north and central Queensland was organised for nine teams across the Under 13, 15 and 18 age groups. Air and bus travel and accommodation was organised for 170 people for the teams, umpires, coaches and managers. I would like to thank Tracy Wallis for her tremendous assistance with these arrangements and for organising uniforms for all teams. During 2007 the Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) Website was restructured to provide a more user friendly front page and to implement an improved content management system. The Website now provides well indexed information categories that are easy to access from the front page and has allowed BHA to provide a much wider range of information for members. For example important information on competition draws and representative teams is now available to members close to the time that the issue is decided. A special Website was also established for Premier League and State Open championships to provide information on the championships and the results of matches as they were available. Thank you to Kim Rendell for his continuing efforts to provide a good public face for BHA through its Website.
Season 2007 has been very successful for Brisbane on the representative front. Firstly we were able to successfully request our No 2 teams be placed in the Coulter Shield Division 1 competition. These teams have traditionally been playing in the Coulter Shield Division 2 which they have been winning easily. However, that has not helped their preparation for State Championships where they play in the Division 1 competition. Now playing in this higher competition helps to challenge and improve the skills of our boys. We have also been successful in sending 3 teams, in each age division, to both the Coulter Shield and State Championships a terrific outcome for the enthusiasm and skill level of the players. Brisbane hockey isnt only about the guys in the first team. Having additional teams going to Coulter Shield and State Championships will strengthen the depth of Brisbane club hockey, keep players in the game and provide opportunities for more players to represent their City, their Club, their parents and most importantly themselves. To watch the skill and personal development of the players in the second and third team in each age group is a joy to all those involved in those teams. The performance of representative teams this year has produced some outstanding results and all those involved should be congratulated. From the very thankless, and often criticised, task of the selectors, to the coaches, managers, players and the support staff, all have done terrific jobs. Thanks to the individual team sponsors that stepped forward this year. These additional things that are provided to the players helps to show to them that being a Brisbane representative player IS a big deal

and they should be proud of their efforts, whatever team they are selected in. These groups have certainly got a lot of things right to have the success that has been enjoyed by Brisbane teams this year. Although selectors every year cop a bagging the results indicate that they have done a good job. Selections are based on opinions, and everybody has one, but as you would expect not all the opinions are the same. Selectors are there to do the best job they can but not everyone will agree with their opinion. The selectors are nominated positions each year so there is an opportunity for those who wish to contribute on that front to put themselves in the firing line. It is difficult to get people to do thankless jobs and if they get a hammering for having an opinion and doing the job they have nominated and selected for it is not surprising it is hard to get someone to do a selection job for more than 1 year. Tracy Wallis and her band of helpers have again done a sterling job with the uniforms with the issuing of orders to the players going very smoothly. Id like to thank the number of parents who willingly give up their time to help out in any way they can to make life easier for the team coaches and managers. The willingness to help with various tasks at tournaments such as uniform washing, shopping for team supplies, lunch preparation, game videoing and time keeping all assist greatly in making our teams successful. Greg Swann has done a magnificent job with organising travel for all the teams. The organisation of getting in excess of 50 people travelling together (in 3 age divisions), organising transport at the various venues and ensuring that the accommodation provided suits the needs of the teams involves many, many hours and very few people realise the dedication to hockey required to do this very large but mostly unrecognised job. Fantastic work Greg and you played no small part in the success of the Brisbane teams as the lack of issues that the travelling teams had to face whilst away allowed them to focus solely on playing good hockey. Id like to recognise the amount of work Darran Bisley has done with the representative teams since season end of last year. I personally believe the extra work done by himself with the under 18 State squad players directly led to a stronger than expected Brisbane presence when the State team was named after the February trials. This team won the National Championships so it was a great outcome for these young Brisbane players. A goalkeeper program has been running most of the season and the work done by Darran in conjunction with Steven Green will, Im sure, lead to Brisbane reaping the benefits in future years. The work done by the Brisbane coaches and Managers should be commended. They give up a great deal of their own time to assist in helping our Brisbane hockey players reach their potential, experience representative hockey, have a positive experience and at the end of the campaign send them back to their clubs as better hockey players. The relationship between the club coaches and rep coaches shouldnt be underestimated. It is important that this relationship be strengthened so that a partnership is formed between these 2 levels of coaching. After all, both coach types are there to make a player better so it is obvious that a cooperative approach should be encouraged. The following table summarises how well the Brisbane boys have done this year.
As happens every year, not everything goes smoothly. I hope that some areas have improved from previous seasons but there are other aspects that will need to be made better for next year. The timing of trials, the length of team preparation and the availability of venues are a couple of areas that will be discussed. Congratulations to all involved on making it a very successful year for Brisbane hockey. Yours in hockey,

DEVELOPMENT
The major focus for this portfolio within the Associations corporate plan is to increase numbers at junior level. In doing so, our sport faces significant competition from the various football codes. If the Association is to maintain its agenda of expansion at the top level and its high level of representative success it must enhance its junior player base and focus on providing coaching at an appropriate level from juniors to seniors. Whilst significant numbers of children are participating in our Minkey and Under 9 competitions, a significant number of them are girls who will obviously not filter into our senior ranks. The Minkey competition was co-ordinated by Andrew May from the Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club this year. I thank him for his contribution, along with the tireless workers from the Valley Hockey Club who set the fields up each week. The competition was well organised and the various Club coaches are to be congratulated on their level of co-operation and the standards their young charges achieved. The Coach and Development Manager took an active role in that competition this year, regularly attending fixtures and speaking with the Minkey coaches. He provided them with coaching resources and a handbook is planned for next year which will standardise the delivery of coaching at this level. The Association is committed to providing a school based competition in the future. To this end the CDM provided 5 school based programs during the year and attended the Wynnum Sports Expo. In partnership with the Logan City Council, the CDM is running a 12 week program on Saturday mornings at Marsden with a view to creating a satellite competition in the area next year. It is essential that the Association and the local Club build upon this program and actively encourage children to stay in the sport. At representative level we have had considerable success at under-age and open age groups. Those successes will be highlighted elsewhere. The CDM has had significant input into the representative program and in enhancing the skills of players at that level as a group and individually, with a particular focus on goalkeeping. That involvement in those programs took up a significant amount of the CDMs time. As a result attempts were made to fill a second position at the Association this year with a focus on expansion and coach development. For personal reasons the preferred applicant was unable to take up the position. Coaching support, junior recruitment and umpire development are three areas that the Association must focus on as it moves towards 2008. I thank Darran Bisley for his efforts as the CDM and all of the other coaches and players who have made such a contribution to the development of players at all levels within the Association this year. I have enjoyed making a contribution at Board level and encourage others to take an active role in the Association and make a contribution to the future of our sport..

The 2007 Hockey Season was the first season played under the Strategic Plan 2012 agreed by the Association in November 2006. The main thrust of planning for 2007 was a focus on growing player numbers in the Minkey and U9 age groups. The Board approved a Grant Scheme of $20,000 to help promote this strategy with the Clubs.
Table 1 shows the increase in player numbers in Minkey/U9 between 2006 and 2007 and the budgeted numbers for 2007. Table 2 shows the total player numbers for 2007. The Association increased total player numbers by 44 an increase of 2.6%. This includes the 16 players introduced by Labrador Sphere as part of their BHL1 team. Total junior numbers (including J's) increased by 8 players (0.96%) which was a disappointing result. The main reason for the focus on junior player numbers was to address the imbalance in the Association between Seniors and Juniors. This imbalance, not only has a detrimental effect on long term player fees, but also on long term competition sustainability. Table 3 shows that the Association improved the ratio of juniors to seniors slightly in 2007 but Figure 2 shows that some clubs still have a significant problem in this area. The view is that clubs need to target a ratio of 1.5:1 junior players to senior players to provide long term sustainability.
PLAYER NUMBERS
The outcome of the Minkey/U9 project was mixed. Figure 1 shows that only 4 clubs with junior sections exceeded their budgeted player numbers in this age group. Overall the Association budgeted for a total of 406 players (up 78 from 2006) in these age groups and 335 players were actually registered (up 7 from 2006). Five clubs saw a decline in player numbers in this group. Credit must be given to those clubs that nevertheless increased their player numbers in these age groups, albeit less than what they forecast.

FOR
2008
I also would like to thank Todd Fuller for his input and his extremely good advice during the season, and a whole hearted thank you also goes to the Team Managers who supported the Bench officials.
Table 5 shows the target for player numbers for 2008. Note that the focus is still on increasing junior player numbers and this must be seen by the Association and the 2008 Board as a vital priority.

PLAYING SEASON
The season commenced on Saturday 31st March 2007 with J1 now playing Saturdays. We endeavoured to keep the age grades playing at the same time each week with Minkey at 8:30am and Under 9s at 9:30am each week at Shaw Park Under 11s were at 10:30am and 11:45am with Under 13 (2) at 11:45am all at Shaw Park. Under 13 (1) played most of their games on the turf at 8:00am when the turf was available with J1 at 9:15am, J2 games 10:45am, J3 were either 9:15 or 10:45am. The semi-finals were all played at the State Hockey Centre and Burringbah Park on Saturday 25th August. Grass games were postponed due to the condition of grass fields due to heavy rain during the week and were played on State Hockey Centre grass on Saturday 1st September. The Preliminary Finals J1, J2, J3 and Under 13 (1) were played at the State Hockey Centre turf on Saturday 1st September with the Under 13 (2), Under 11 (1) and Under 11 (2) Preliminary finals being played at the State Hockey Centre grass on Sunday 2nd September. All the grand final games were played at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday 8th September and my congratulations to all winning teams. Just Hockey supplied Vouchers for the player of each Grand Final game we thank them very much.
CORPORATE HOCKEY
The inaugural corporate hockey tournament was held in the pre-season period and coincided with the Australia v Netherlands Test matches. Eight teams participated with most of the players not being regular hockey players. Teams were augmented by players from the Clubs and this format proved to be a great success. The winning team was from Cardno Eppell Olsen (Consulting Engineers). The 2008 tournament will take place in February to coincide with the Australia v UK test matches. Thanks must go to David Cole and Dane McCormack (SW United) and Brett Smith (UQ) who helped organise the event and to all the other volunteers who helped on the day. Our 2007 season once again demonstrated the need for a serious commitment from clubs to increase their junior player numbers. It is hoped that the Grant Scheme will continue to provide assistance to clubs in this important endeavour. We look forward to more progress in 2008.

OF
SPECIAL PROJECTS
This was the first year of this portfolio and the main project was to address the position of the Technical Official with regard to the game . A committee comprising Todd Fuller, Barney & Karen Kuhn and myself met to discuss the general make up of Technical Officials and their responsibilities. A training seminar was organized and it was well attended, but several of the attendees did not realize the responsibilities involved ( many thought it was just to fill in the match book) and so did not go any further with the training. Those who remained, I felt carried out their duties to the best of their abilities, sometimes under duress. This action was not something that was going to be perfect immediately and I am well aware that their needs to be some refinement ; we cant all be perfect. It will be worked on over the off season and all will be ready for the 2008 season. To June Grant, Leonie Marsden, Karen & Barney Kuhn, Sasha Hawgood, Ann King, Grayson Leadbetter, Clarrie Hicks, Tracey Harper and Laurie Pritchard, thank you for manning the Technical Benches during the season.

To our coaches Col Morley, Peter Harten, Glenys Harten, Assistant Coach Robert Landon, Managers Trevor Wallis, Kerry Lund and Ross Hall thank you for all your efforts. Three players were selected in the Queensland team to play in the National Championships in Perth from 4th October to 13th October they were Daniel Beale, Matthew Pembroke and Blake Wallis. Daniel BiaseMcInally was named a shadow and Ethan Holmes was selected in the Talent Identification Squad. Congratulations to all these boys. Congratulations to Cairns on a successful Championship. The 2008 Championship will be held at Bundaberg. To Regional Coaching Director Darran Bisley who also helped the coaches at the Under 13 and Under 15 Championships and we thank him also.
BHA V E T E R A N S ' H O C K E Y C O M M I T T E E R E P O R T
We saw the Brisbane Veterans competition consolidate at 16 teams as for 2006. However with Redcliffe becoming available for fixtures, we were able to play the entire round each week on a Tuesday night. Six games were scheduled for SHCs two fields with time-slots being 7.00, 8.10, and 9.20, and two games at Redcliffe in the two earlier timeslots. Duration of games was two 30 minute halves. For quite a few seasons we have been able to accommodate teams in the competition in their division of choice. This year that was impossible as only 3-4 teams had a preference for the top division. Perhaps a symptom of everyone getting older. So we implemented a short grading round. Using seedings from last year, teams were arranged in four groups of four for the first three games, then split into two eight-team divisions. The next four games completed the first round. An adjustment to the composition of first and second division was then made and the second and third round were played as follows: First Division Easts 1, Kedron Wavell 1, Bulimba 1, Norths, St Andrews, University, Valley, Easts 2. Second Division Commercial, Kedron Wavell 2, Redcliffe, South-West United, Bulimba 2, Bulimba 3, Southbank Storm, Pine Hills. Because of the adjustments to the composition of the two divisions during the year, the points may not have been truly reflective of all of the respective standings of all teams. Hopefully this is a secondary to having a format that allows all teams to compete each week throughout the season. At the end of the fixture rounds, all 16 teams had the opportunity to participate in play-off games with the lower four teams in each division playing a consolation round. Grand Final night was 11 September. Results of Grand Finals that really count were: Division One - Kedron Wavell 1 drew Easts 1 and then won 2-1 in golden goal extra time, and Division Two - Kedron-Wavell 2 defeated Bulimba 2, 2-1. Presentations were made immediately after the games. This year the Golden Oldie Award was presented to Allen Schasser. This award is determined by votes of the players. Allen has been a big contributor to Brisbane Veterans Hockey as a player, Selector, Brisbane Team Manager, and Umpire (including in the Grand Final).
INTERCITY M ATCHES
This year saw another busy intercity programme. In Coulter Shield this year the age groups were played as a one day carnival with Under 15 in Brisbane on 3rd June, Under 13 in Toowoomba 20th May and Under 11 at Tweed Border 29th July. Under 15 Brisbane (1) won with Brisbane (2) second and Brisbane (3) 3rd. and Under 13 Brisbane (1) won, Brisbane (2) 7th and Brisbane (3) won Division 2. In Under 11 Brisbane (1) were placed 3rd, Brisbane (2) were 5th and Brisbane 3 were 2nd in Division 2. This year the Sydney Exchange matches were not played. They have been transferred to next year.
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT
This season our Regional Coaching Director Mr. Darran Bisley carried out the Junior Development programme for the year. We would like to thank Darran for his input into our Rep program this year.
UMPIRES
This year saw several Junior players getting their badges in umpiring, these players umpiring in Coulter shield and the final series of games. Jason Lund, Toby Hamilton and Peter Willington umpired at the Under 13 championships in Mackay, Adam McClelland, Ethan Triggell, Declan Kilkenny and Jason Lund attended the Under 15 Championships in Cairns. Thank you to Kerry Lund for his efforts to have official umpires for our fixture games this year, a job well done!
JUST HOCKEY
Vouchers from Just Hockey were available to new members signing on with clubs for $10 off a starters stick was again successful and Player of the Finals Gift vouchers. We thank Just Hockey for their Sponsorship in 2007.

ASSOCIATION M EETINGS
The Association meetings were held on the third Monday of each month in the Hockey Queensland Players room. The attendance by delegates was very pleasing where constructive discussions on many topics were held. The Association wishes to thank the State Hockey Centre and Hockey Queensland in allowing the meetings to take place at no cost.
The friendly hit for anyone able to get there from 3pm to 4.30pm has continued throughout the year. It is greatly enjoyed by the participants, and it is our intention to keep this as a regular part of Brisbane Vets hockey.
REPRESENTATIVE
SEASON
Brisbane over 45's were successful in winning the State Championships which were held at Sunshine Coast on the May Day long weekend. We fielded three teams in the tournament. There was a Coulter Shield for 45's held prior to this, also at Sunshine Coast. This was disappointing with only three teams showing up. There was no 40's Coulter Shield this year. Brisbane hosted the Over 40s and Over 55s State Championships on the June long weekend at the State Hockey Centre. This was again a huge undertaking with 17 teams in 40's and six teams in 55's. Brisbane was runner-up to Sunshine Coast in the Over 40's. The Over 55's was also won by Sunshine Coast. This year Brisbane was one of six teams involved in an inaugural Over 35's tournament, which we won. Queensland Over 35's subsequently defeated NSW in a two-match challenge held at Gold Coast on 21 and 22 July.
CONCLUSION
The Junior Committee extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during this year. The Chairmans role was carried out by Mr. John Donald and I thank him for his assistance during the year. To Mark Carter (Deputy Chairman) and Duncan Campbell (Minutes) a special thank you for your assistance and efforts I would also like to thank the Brisbane Hockey Association General Secretary Mr Kim Rendell, Mr Peter Harten, Mr Russell Marsden and Mr Greg Swann for their help throughout the year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and help throughout the year and wish everyone best wishes for the forthcoming festive season and successful 2008.

LOOKING
AHEAD
The future looks bright. Our playing numbers could increase again next year it seems vets is the growth area in hockey. We are probably getting closer to a split in divisions based on age-groups, e.g. Over 40 Division, and an Over 50 Division. Another possibility is a split into three divisions. From the committee viewpoint, it is our intention to spread the load a bit more in preparation for and the running of season 2008. To this end, the various tasks involved have all been itemised, and the allocation of tasks to individuals, or groups, has commenced. As we all know, the 2008 season will be here before we know it. The representative season will be early, with State Championships for 35's and 55's at Murwillumbah the weekend of 19 April, and for 40's, 45's, 50's at Toowoomba the long weekend of 3 May. National Titles are in Darwin 719 July.
