Dear Friends
Most everyone has gone through times in our lives when we feel weve lost our way. Part of New Harbingers mission is to publish books for people who want to get their lives back on track. To that end, weve published hundreds of books that offer compassionate, immediate help to people struggling with a variety of life problems. The New Monogamy is one of those, designed particularly for readers who find themselves in the difficult position of being in a relationship with a partner who has been unfaithful. This book shows how a relationship can be rebuilt by creating a new monogamy contract that explicitly outlines the new monogamy agreement between the couple. For those who are not struggling with a major crisis, but nevertheless feel that their lives could use a lift from the worries and troubles of daily life, I recommend The Joy Compass. This little book teaches eight unique mindfulness strategies that are essential for redirecting the brain away from stress and toward the joy that is in the present moment. Finally, were proud to introduce Bipolar: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed, the fourth book in our successful series and, I think, a much-needed one. One kind of life-changing moment that many people experience is being on the receiving end of a mental health disorder diagnosis. I have seen many of my therapy clients come to terms with new diagnoses in adulthood. The experience can be immensely healing or devastatingbut in any case, it helps to have a guide. Our Guides for the Newly Diagnosed series offers answers to the many questions that come to mind to a newly diagnosed person. Every one of our books is designed to help make our readers lives better, whether they need professional advice or just a daily dose of perspective. Thank you, as always, for supporting New Harbingers life-changing books and helping us to put these resources into the hands of people who need them.

The Guide to Compassionate Assertiveness

How to Express Your Needs and Deal with Conflict While Keeping a Kind Heart
Sherrie M. Vavrichek, LCSW-C

This is the first book to present a compassionate approach to assertiveness training. The exercises in this book help readers identify their own interpersonal styles and integrate compassionate assertiveness strategies into their interactions with others.

The Guide to Compassionate Assertiveness does not require that readers ignore the needs of others and focus solely on their own desires. Rather, this unique blend of cognitive behavioral therapy-based assertiveness training and Buddhist psychology helps readers practice assertiveness skills while caring deeply about the welfare of others. The book focuses on speaking up for the benefit of others and speaking up for the relationship, not just ones own needs.
Sherrie M. Vavrichek, LCSW-C, is a senior staff member at the Behavior Therapy Center of Greater Washington, in the Washington, D.C. area.

relationship, increasing conflicts, misunderstanding, and tension. Anxious in Love is a relationship guide for partners who have an anxiety disorder that offers readers proven skills for calming their anxieties and communicating with their partners. First, readers learn to self-soothe when their anxiety is triggered so that they can calm and center themselves when faced with their worries and fears. Second, readers learn to understand their anxiety from their partners perspective and develop new skills for handling anxiety-related conflicts that may arise. This section will be especially helpful for readers whose anxiety is triggered by disagreements in the relationship. Lastly, readers practice self-sufficiency and work on not relying on their partners to ease their worries or calm their anxieties. This can create an unfair burden on the partner that can lead to tension and conflict. This section emphasizes that it is the readers responsibility to take care of himself or herself in order to maintain a healthy relationship. The strategies in this book can help reduce conflict in any relationship that is affected by anxiety and increase communication and understanding between partners.

The Two Truths About Love is a guide to creating this third type of relationshipan extraordinary partnership wherein each partner feels fully accepted and loved as they are. Designed over the course of thousands of hours conducting face-to-face counseling sessions with clients, psychotherapist and former Buddhist monk Jason B. Fischers unique approach has already improved the lives of countless individuals and couples. The two secrets to creating extraordinary relationships are simple: partners must 1. Taking responsibility for their own reactions, behaviors, assumptions, and expectations of their partner and the relationship. This book gives readers the tools to start giving permission and taking responsibility in their own relationships and offers strategies for letting go of dissatisfaction and habitual conflicts. In short, accessible chapters, readers learn how to put these seemingly simple rules into practice to regain balance and peace in their partnerships.

DBT Made Simple

A Step-by-Step Guide to Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Sheri Van Dijk, MSW

New Harbinger excels in publishing accessible and practical books on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), with over 200,000 books on DBT sold. Sheri Van Dijks previous books have sold a combined total of over 30,000 copies. This book offers professionals a skills-based manual for applying DBT in therapy.

Originally developed for the treatment of borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, has rapidly become one of the most popular and most effective treatments for all mental health conditions rooted in out-ofcontrol emotions. However, there are limited resources for psychologists seeking to use DBT skills with individual clients. In the tradition of ACT Made Simple, DBT Made Simple provides clinicians with everything they need to know to start using DBT in the therapy room. The first part of this book briefly covers the theory and research behind DBT and explains how DBT differs from traditional cognitive behavioral therapy approaches. The second part focuses on strategies professionals can use in individual client sessions, while the third section teaches the four skills modules that form the backbone of DBT: core mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. The book includes handouts, case examples, and example therapistclient dialogueeverything clinicians need to equip their clients with these effective and life-changing skills.

Shyness is a common problem that comes with a high price. People with shyness or social anxiety tend to avoid social situations and may have trouble connecting with others due to their extreme fear of humiliation, rejection, and judgment. Shy people may also experience panic attacks that make them even more likely to avoid social situations. With The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Social Anxiety and Shyness, the authors acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) program for overcoming shyness has become available to the public for the first time. This program has been found to be highly effective in research studies for the treatment of social anxiety disorder and related subclinical levels of shyness. In the first section, readers confront performance fears, test anxiety, shy bladder, and interpersonal fearsfundamental symptoms of social anxiety. The second part helps readers learn psychological flexibility to improve their ability to accept the feelings, thoughts, and behavior that may arise as they learn to work past their anxiety. By keeping their values front and center, readers gradually learn to move beyond their
