eBO OK S!
The process of converting our textbooks into eBooks has started! Colleges can now add a digital platform to their lecturing and choose from a growing range of newly converted eBooks. Although the range is currently still small, it will grow exponentially over the coming months. All our eBooks are available for iPhone, iPad as well as for Android and in Flash formats to cater for most tablets and other handheld devices as well as PCs. This means lecturers can use the latest technology to enhance the lecturing experience. The following were our guiding principles when we developed our eBook platform and template: Functionality across devices The eBook must be as bandwidth friendly as possible Enrichment must add real value to learning Payment methods must suit the institution It must improve the lecturing experience Our challenge is to get lecturers excited about eBooks and convince them to start using them in conjunction with the accompanying textbook! For more details, visit our eBooks section on our website or download the Future Managers App from the relevant app store on your tablet or smartphone.

HANDS-on-support
for NCV 2

This book focuses mainly on the first few years of a childs life when the maximum benefit of adequate and appropriate stimulation can be gained. It deals with aspects of growth and development beginning in the womb. Other topics dealt with in the book are how learning occurs in the early years as well as inclusion and diversity. Our approach to this important subject has been to include as many practical tasks as possible to allow the NCV student to gain experience in the development of stimulating activities for children from birth to 6 years of age.

Both books cover the curriculum comprehensively, as well as offering the additional benefit of gaining skills such as writing memos, adverts, reports, CVs, minutes and setting meeting agendas. They also help students gain an insight into the wide range of communication forms used in the world of work, which will be invaluable for students embarking on their chosen career.

NCV 4 Fundamentals
L ANG UAGE
Our NCV 4 Language Hands-On Training books are student friendly; containing themes aimed at young adults. These easy to follow textbooks build on the foundations laid at levels 2 & 3. Should a lecturer have to simultaneously teach a group of Business Studies students as well as Engineering students, it should pose no problem as the page and activity numbering of both books are exactly the same. Examples and activities address the relevant vocational direction of the students. Whereas Business Studies students have to advertise items such as a computer, fast food, a surfboard or house sitting; Engineering students have to advertise a concrete mixer, angle grinder, plumbing kit, safety goggles and gloves!

Our Office Data Processing books are not only written according to the NCV subject guidelines, but are also accredited by the ICDL. What this means is that students completing the NCV Office Data Processing course will be fully equipped to write the ICDL examination.

Th E FU L L SOLU T ION
Offering an ICDL course or preparing the NCV students to write the ICDL examination has never been easier. The ICDL has introduced a web-based interactive programme that supports both students and the lecturers during training and assists with preparation for the examinations. The Full Solution includes:

Learning Platform Automated Testing System Management System

COS T
Completing the ICDL certificate for NCV Office Data Processing students is now extremely cost effective! Consider the following; Textbooks: Our NCV3 and NCV 4 textbooks are all ICDL accredited and therefore no additional learning material is required. Skills logbooks: FET Colleges have the option of ordering an Office Data Processing/ICDL pack. This pack includes both the textbook and ICDL Skills logbook, meaning no additional costs to the student. See our pricelist for details. Learning Platform The Learning Platform to assist both lecturer and student is available to all ICDL Accredited FET Colleges. Automated tests: Automated testing is an excellent means of preparation for the final exam. By using the simulated exercises on the Learning Platform and receiving immediate feedback the likelihood of rewriting the exam is dramatically reduced and therefore so are the costs. Community Development
GR I EF S U P P O RT hELP ING ChIL DR E N hE AL
When your father or mother dies it is hard to believe that you can go on with your life. But I found you can. It was all because of a support group for teens where I met others who had also lost someone they love. Our group leader Angel helped us to heal. She listened and taught us to listen to each other (and ourselves) in a special way. We started to feel better and get on with our lives. This is a quote from the book Someone I Love Died, authored by Heather Ferris, an independent writer, counsellor and trainer working in South Africa and Canada. In 2005, after working in communities with women and training educators in the Northern Cape, Heather cofounded Khululeka, an organisation offering grief support for children and youth, in Cape Town. To this day Khululeka encourages and trains people to run support groups for bereaved children. Later, whilst working with AIDS orphans in Libode in the Eastern Cape, Heather realised the extent of children grieving and wrote Someone I Love Died in 2007 to share these experiences youth were having in their support groups, in the hope it would bring healing to a wider audience. Someone I Love Died is currently available in isiXhosa, isiZulu, Afrikaans and English. Thuli said after reading it, Yes, I have experienced lots of hope from those children who have lost their loved ones. They didnt have hope, but when they met others and took out what was in their hearts they ended up knowing why they have a right to live and that was more than helpful! Soon after, teachers requested a book for younger children. Heather was working in Slangspruit KZN in 2009 and a young friend Mantombi read and named her next book, I Am Not Alone. In the story Mpilo loses his mother to AIDS and is supported by his grandparents. He learns that although he is sad, he also has happy days and he does feel better in time. Mantombi, who had lost both her own parents, also illustrated the accompanying workbook. Another resource, Helping Hands Happy Hearts (developed during 2009), is a set of cards that adults can use to help children get involved with others again if they are feeling lonely. It includes healing exercises taught by Capacitar.org. For information on ongoing training, visit khululeka@ipages.co.za, tel 021 448 2058

Mpilo was six years old when his mother passed away. He is very sad but he soon notices other feelings as well. He even has days when he is happy. Mpilo gets support and he realises that even though his mother is not with him, he is not alone.

Helping Hands, Happy Hearts by Heather Ferris, is a reminder to all of us that no matter how hard life is, we can use our hands to make ourselves and others happy. The cards can be used as a reading and Life Orientation resource to help learners think about service to others. Each card has a picture and a message. On the back are suggestions for teachers and facilitators.

Netball: Play with rules

Annie Kloppers
ISBN 978-1920364540

A brilliant expos of the Rules in Action Theresa Prince (SA International Umpire)

The Author
Next to playing for the South African Netball Team, being a Netball Umpire is the ultimate challenge. Having done both I came to the conclusion that the game of Netball can only improve if the standard of Umpiring also improves. It has become a passion to set myself on a course of self-improvement in developing my umpiring skills and sharing this with my fellow umpires, players and coaches.

To become an umpire is not just a decision to take up a whistle. The difference between better and lesser umpires is passion. Once you have developed the passion to umpire, you will start developing the need to add value to the game instead of only influencing the outcome of the game. Knowing and understanding the rules is of great importance. An umpire needs to attend rule discussions as often as they can; more than on an annual basis. In Malawi in 2006, I started to monitor Annie and advised her that she needed to read the rules every day. That is where umpiring starts; only once you know the rules by heart can you start with skills. Unfortunately the difference between good umpires is not just about knowing the rules but also about skills. You have to be coached (monitored) to develop your skills. You have to accept that mistakes will be made and that you will have to work on various challenging aspects such as fitness so as to perfect your skills. You will have to accept criticism given by your mentor. Then, of course, character plays an important role in the difference between umpires. When you umpire, your desire must be to earn the respect of the players and spectators. You never umpire for a team or some person but you umpire to add value to the game of netball. Enjoy your umpiring career and may you be remembered as having enhanced the wonderful game of netball. Dr Hannette Brewer
