The UC Art Alumni Group Symposium X

Art Negotiations: Choices, Compromises and Commitments
This year’s symposium is a presentation of images and points of view, which will deepen an understanding of the concerns and ingredients that compose an artist’s career. Your fellow participants in this year’s event are:

Professional Participants:
Leo Bersamina, artist and instructor, Diablo Valley College Enrique Chagoya, artist and Professor of Art, Stanford University Mildred Howard, artist, educator and Artist/Consultant at San Francisco Exploratorium Chris Johnson, artist, Professor of Photography, Calif. College of the Arts, and originator of “Question Bridge” Indira Martina Morre, artist, co-director of Martina[ ]Johnston Gallery, Visiting Lecturer, U. C. Berkeley Richard Whittaker, independent curator, art writer, and publisher of Works and Conversations Panel Moderator: Jan Wurm, artist and educator.

Schedule of the Day:
9:00 a.m. Registration, coffee, and informal mini-interviews with attendees. 10:00 am. – 12:00 noon The morning panel discussion : The moderator is Jan Wurm. As an introduction to the panel discussion, Jan will focus on the choices, compromises and commitments inherent in an artist's life. She will introduce each individual panelist, who will then give a brief visual presentation (approx 6 - 8 minutes). After the entire panel’s visual presentations, the discussion will open with reflections, exchange, and observations. 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm Lunch : Attendees may purchase lunch by Ann’s Catering ($15) which will be a buffet in the Worth Ryder Gallery. The lunch hour will allow an opportunity to gather in small groups, and index cards will be available to write questions and comments. These will then serve as starting points for the afternoon session. 1:15 pm - 3:30 pm. The afternoon open discussion : Discussion will center on the questions and comments from attendees submitted at the close of the lunch hour. The table will be removed to better allow free-flowing dialogue with the symposium attendees. 3:30 pm – 4:00 pm Concluding comments : All participants will be asked to give brief exit interviews, or written comments, so that experiences and thoughts can be posted and shared via the Art Alumni Blog.
