OF COMMONS

LONDON

Mr Ed Richards Chief Executive of Ofeom Riverside House 2a Southwark Bridge Road London SEl 9HA 16 October 2012

Dear Ed Given the appalling revelations which have emerged regarding Jimmy Savile during his time at the BBC I am writing to ask you to instigate an inquiry into whether or not the BBC are a fit and proper organisation to hold a broadcasting licence. It seems increasingly clear that Jimmy Savile sexually abused a large number of people whilst working for the BBC and on the premises of the BBC. It is also becoming obvious that there were a large number of people within the BBC, including in senior positions, who were aware of the allegations surrounding Jimmy Savile and yet did nothing to investigate them or bring them to the attention of the Police. There has clearly also been a long-standing widespread culture of inappropriate behaviour at the BBC, including sexual harassment and assault of which Jimmy Savile's activities were at the extreme. We are yet to discover exactly who knew what at the BBC and when but it is inconceivable that nobody there in senior positions today were aware of the allegations surrounding Jimmy Savile or other inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour. Given that Ofeom initiated a fit and proper inquiry into Sky relating to less serious allegations of phone hacking at a company owned by a minority shareholder in Sky, I am sure you must appreciate that such an inquiry should also take place into the BBC given the serious allegatio elating directly to the broadcaster itself. earing from you with your decision.
