Ancient China and Ancient Egypt

Introduction For the next few weeks in social studies we will be learning about Ancient China and Ancient Egypt. Ancient means a very, very long time ago. So we will be talking about these countries from a very long time ago. Grade Level This is a social studies lesson for the second grade. Objective The children will learn about the inventions, architecture, calendar and written language of Ancient China and Egypt. The children will learn through books, videos and worksheets. Standard (Virginia Standard of Learning, SOL) 2.1 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient China and Egypt have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, inventions, the calendar, and written language. Timeline This lesson will take a total of 4 weeks. 2 weeks with each country. Materials The videos from my video library. Books:

Each child will have their own computer and will work independently. Learning Activity/Assessment The learning activity will also serve as the unit assessment for each child. The assignment for the computer lab will be for each child to create a power point presentation. Each presentation will have a minimum of 4 slides, (2 each from China and Egypt) each slide containing a picture (pre chosen) and 2-3 sentences about the picture Adaptions To adapt the assessment for my ESOL and SPED children there will be four (4) premade screens. The screens will have a picture of things that we have learned from ancient China and Egypt. There will be a clozed statement below the picture. For each screen there will be a word box. The words in the box will be accompanied with a visual aid. The children will type of drag the appropriate word to the correct blank space to help them create their power point presentation.
